Paul Woods

Next up is Earls mk2 v6,formerly a tubby this one,but we are going NA running gear as its the preferred drivetrain of the v6 conniseur these days

Anyhow we have started stripping and fettling his v6 engine, this one is the lowest mileage v6 we have ever had,how does 55k on the clock grab you? its no different to the higher mileage ones we have used in the past but we didnt believe camrys still came with as low a mileage as this.Just dont all start asking for 55k engines please! :hand:

Here is the engine block stripped...

and the cam covers cleaned/primed and awaiting paint...

Nice one Earl!

Probably spend most your time on the webcam thingy seeing how things are going! I was like a kid when I saw the plumes of steam coming from the exhaust pipes for the first time :)

55K miles on a V6...... crikey it's only just been run in lol

Holy crap! I didn't even notice my own build thread!!!! lol

The car's not even with Paul yet until this Sunday, and I already have my own thread. Brilliant stuff.

55k!!!!!!! How the hell did you find that one Paul? I've been scouring the ads for a decent low mileage engine for months now, and have only come across 90k+ milers.

Top stuff buddy. Thanks a million.

As for colours... I really liked the look of Jinja's motor against the yellow of the bodywork, so I'm going for a similar theme. Red cam covers and small ancillery parts, Silver intake plenum, Black top cover, Black engine block, Silver gearbox (as is the norm). It's not going to get as much treatment as some at the moment, as my dad passed away recently, leaving me with some quite horrific bills, so just the basics for now, but I'll definately be looking to have the heads ported etc & supercharge it in the near future.

Thaks for the support guys,

EarL.

Sorry to hear about your dad and your bills beleive me it will all work out in the end.
on a brighter note that sounds like a good coulor combo on the engine , ithink I'm going to go for a mild build to start and wild when funds allow depends if I can find some c26t turbos cheap or a second hand rotrex.

Aye, if it doesn't fit, just hack the fuck out of it with a grinder till it does? lol

There's a coupla second hand ones but not sure if it's worth it.

New ones seem to be abot £40 plus delivery from Camskill mind you. Cheaper from the states but dunno how long that'd take.

Feck it, i'll use a spare one for now and if it goes tits up again, you can come fix it for me Owen.

It did 3k miles and I fitted it new, I removed it before scrapping the engine.

Yours FOC and I have a parcel (mk2 gbox mount) heading to Paul's so can send it together tomorrow?

I have just repacked the parcel and the missus will post it up tomorrow - should be with you during the week.
Paul said he will have the engine mount for £10 so that will cover postage easily.

Well, the drive from Treharris in South Wales to Durham was an eventful one. My missus and I left at around 9.45am, heading North. By 2.15 we were making good ground and were well on schedule to arrive in Durham at around 4pm, but as Paul would not be able to get there until 5pm, we decided to stop off for a bite to eat.

We pushed on shortly after and progressed as far as Leeds, but roadworks delayed us for around 1/2 an hour. We pushed on a little more, but were then faced with a rolling nuclear arms protest! After grinding our way past that lot, we slowed to nearly a halt when some silly beggar decided to roll thier 4x4 down the bank, instead of driving nicely on the road like the rest of us.

It was really nice to meet Paul, who kindly showed me around the workshop, and also showed me my stunning motor, that Anth has been working on.

For those of you that are waiting for your conversion to begin, believe me... the wait is worth it. The pictures in these builds simply do not do justice to the level of detail and workmanship Paul and his team turn out. I was completely blown away by the work that had gone into my engine. The paintwork on it is better than that on my car!!! lol

Roll on driving time now...

Once again, many thanks to Mr Woods, who was kind enough to drop my wife and I to the hotel we were staying in near the airport. Really nice to meet you mate.

See you soon,

EarL.

Paul Woods
28-04-2008, 18:33

Earl it was worth the wait fella!!!

Your gonna love it buddy!!.. ;)

i picked mine up today (this morning) and i was stunned.. i saw your car there too mate, and its looking awsome! :)

I was well frickin chuffed with the performance...i took it quite steady as paul suggested until it proper settles in...but OMG, a brief touch of the throttle and its fires up amazingly!!

im over the moon with the outcome, especially the exhaust note, which paul said it was a lil on the loud side for woodsports usual tastes... but for me, it was PERFECT!! (i drove about 300 miles...without any need for my cd/dvd/tv screen.. i had to turn it off to revel in the exotic car sounds!

Im not gonna look to replace my exhaust tbh.. the noise has this exotic car tinny kinda sound to it you'd expect from a ferrari or something.. and at 30-40 mph just cruising about towns...the sound makes you feel like your driving around in a ferrari f50!! lol

no jokes aside..i made it from woodsport to the petrol station just across the road before i had a group of middle aged northern guys, crowd round the car and come chat to me about the car, telling me how nice it was and how amazing it sounded...and they asked if i was selling too!! lol.

i was like...sorry guys, i only just had this done..and when i opened up the engine bay, the reaction was pure brilliant!!

Best bit was when i said..i had engine put in at an attempt to get a ferrari styled sound...and when requested to fire it up...it turned it over... blipped the throttle and it was agreed that "job done!!" :)

Thanks to the woodsport team!

Tom (aka a very happy bunny!! )

Well it's funny you should dsay that, because I'm not too fussed on that look. I'm torn between doing them black with polished rims, or changing them for something in silver. Here's what it could look like with silver wheels, in the kind of design I'm fond of...

If you start adding spangly bits it'll detract from the look of it.

Ok, here goes...

My wife and I caught the 12.45 flight from Cardiff to Newcastle yesterday to pick the car up from Woodport. A very uneventful flight, and trainride to Durham. We then got a taxi to the business park where the Woodsport premesis is located where my car sat, waiting to go.

Paul and Ollie gave us a hearty greeting and I was shown to the car to see the engine and other work that had been done to it.

Now I've been in a fairly priveliged position in the past, to more or less have carte blache with a bank account to go as wild as I wanted, and as many of you have previously seen, the effect was pretty good, but.... I can honestly say, regardless of cost, I have never seen such a complete and stunning piece of work, as the job that Paul, Anth and Ollie have done to my car. The level of workmanship that has gone into this coversion is beyond belief. When Paul lifted the engine cover for the first time, it truly took my breath away.

We talked for a few minutes, and Paul went over what I should be doing over the next day or so in terms of what to look for, and how to treat the newly installed engine. Finally, I could hold it in no longer. "I have to hear it Paul. Do you mind if I start it up...?"

With a turn of the key, the motor fired up. The tailpipes burbling merrily. Paul reached into the bay after the engine had warmed a little and twisted the throttle linkage...

...Oh my god. lol

I've heard some amazing engine sounds in my time, that have come from some stunning machinery, but I think I'd be hard pushed to think of one that sounds anywhere near as good as this. I simply can't have asked for anything better.

Here's what you get for your money gentlemen...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/9.jpg

...I think you'll agree, it's worth every penny.

And so the time came for us to wish the lads fairwell, and embark on the long drive home. The journey back to our village of Edwardsville in South Wales is more or less 350 miles, give or take a yard or two, and believe it or not, I was looking forward to every single mile.

We pulled out of the yard and headed for the petrol station to fill up. I checked my wallet, and found that I only had £40 on me, so I thought i'd put £30 worth in and see how it went. The other tenner went on snacks for the journey.

The gauge read a couple of marks past half way, and going on what I'd read, and been told about the V6's economy, my wife and I were expecting to pull in to another service station around a hundred miles or so down the road. Not so... we were still on a quarter of a tank after 170 miles!!! Believe it or not, we did the whole journey using just under 3/4 of a tank of fuel! I've still got over quarter of a tank to use for work! I'm utterly stunned. We worked it out to have returned somwhere around 35 mpg for the whole trip! My wife's 1.4 Clio would have used more fuel! :icon_eek:

The other obvious plus point of this conversion, is the different level of performance the V6 gives to the MR2, and what a huge difference the motor makes to the driving experience. To say it transforms the car would be understatement of the millenium. Where previously, the power had to be wound on during the way into a roundabout to spool the turbo, the six can be feathered on the way in, and it's responsiveness and huge torque curve spits the car out the other side with a fabulous wag of the car's tail, as the rear tyres light up under the strain. It makes every corner a delight. ...and as for gears... who needs them! Overtaking is a complete breeze. Just plant your foot, let the sound of that wonderful V6 overture wash over you, and sail past as many cars as you like, all in the blink of an eye.

In all my years of MR2 ownership, I have never enjoyed a driving my car so much.

Huge thanks go to Paul, Anth and Ollie for all your hard work. You've made an old man, very young. lol

Is that on the Turbo box dude? If it is, they're slightly longer gearing, which means the revs will be that little bit lower - which is always nice for better economy.

The poor N/A boys, who might enjoy a hint of better acceleration will certainly have to call to the pumps more often.

Let the rabble argue Owen. It's definately as quick, if not a little quicker than a Rev 1 turbo. Furthermore, coming out of sharpish bends, it would destroy a Rev 1 turbo, and probably a Rev 3 too, for a few hundred yards.

It's simply awesone mate.

I have the same sort of disdain shown by some of the Mk3 turbo owners towards my V6, they don't get it basically. Most Mk2 owners, ( with the exception of our members, who are better informed) wouldn't even acknowledge the Mk3's presence!
I have to say Earl, those fuel figures are superb, especially for the speeds.

Huh! The cheek! lol

Nice to finaly meet you too Ollie mate.

The accelleration is like chalk and cheese. The tubby is far more top-endy, especially the Rev 3. The earlier cars made power a little earlier, but they still suffered from lag in comparison to any N/A.

The V6 definately doesn't feel as fast at the top end. In fact it feels a little flat in comparison to the top end rush of the turbo, but that's not where the V6 excels. You do this conversion for two reasons. 1 - to be different & 2 - for the torque.

For me, it's absolutely perfect mate.

Hi guys,

Just a little feedback for y'all.

I've been driving the car now for best part of a fortnight, and can honestly say, the thoughts of tubbies are now long gone. This is definately how Toyota should have built the car in the first place!

The instant power, the sound (and it would seem the economy too) are all hugely different to that of the turbo. Different, but in a good way.

I used to enjoy a quick blast in my old car, but I just simply don't want to get out of this one! It's totally addictive. A couple of mates have been completely converted by having been a passenger in it too. Paul, expect a couple more enquiries very soon. ;)

I pulled into a petrol station the other day behind my friends TVR (he needed fuel, not me), and a couple of guys in a stunning Silver MkI Golf GTI came over for a better look. The driver of the Golf commented that my MR2 actually sounded better than the Trevor! When I showed them the engine, they were gobsmacked! At first they thought the small chrome V6 badges I have on the car now were fake, but not after I'd popped the lid. lol

Suffice to say, I'm hugely happy with how the car has turned out. And have the utmost respect for the guys at Woodsport for turning out such a wonderful creation.

Thanks Paul, Anth & Ollie!

Glen.

Glen.

Well chuffed for you m8, great feedback too. Can't wait for mine now, even if it is a sillycar

Not too long to wait either :jump:

Really pleased you're enjoying it Earl! :) :)

I really should have done something on my thread about long term ownership, although I've still a lot of things to do on mine yet.

Can appreciate what you say about the top end, compared to the tubby it does feel a little flat, however below 80 around the twisty stuff on the west coast I have far more fun with the V6, cornering is much more fun using a throttle that is actually progressive!

I posted a 14.5 on the 1/4 mile, compared to my rev2 turbo with boost increase did a 14.2. So the real world difference is negligible. It's certainly enough pace to entertain and the noise especially with the roof off is fantastic!!!

Bit of an update...

Couple of days ago... went out to the car tyo go to work to find that some thieving scumbag had thought the car would look better without the boot spoiler, and had removed said item without the niceties of tools.

The result is a pair of dented rear wings where the areswipes have levered the spoiler up, using the wing as leverage, and a bent boot lid on both sides.

The spoiler mountings are still attached to the boot, and the lid itself is now bent way out of shape.

Lovely...

All in hand with the Plod and insurance though. It'll be going to an approved bodyshop to be repaired, so it should be done properly enough.

I managed to partially straighten out the boot so it seals around the edges again now. Didn't want any rain getting in, and also plugged the spoiler mounting holes with grommets. It looks a little more presentable now...

Cheers guys.

Took the car for the estimate this morning. The garage said it's going to be hard to match up the colour as it's faded a bit over the years, but on the flip side, they're going to be fitting a brand new boot lid and repairing the rear wings.

Just got to wait for the insurance to cough up now...

EarL out.

Ok, just a bit of an update...

Having now owned my V6 for well over a year, I can honestly say it has been, without doubt, the most reliable cars I've ever had the pleasure of driving/owning. It's still as frugal as it was the day I picked it up from Paul, and starts first time, every time.

However... (you knew it was coming didn't you)

On the way home the other evening, I had a bit of a play along the stretch of bypass that runs from Merthyr to Abercynon with a friends Renault Clio 197 Sport. Well fun, and it taught Frenchie a thing or two.

When I turned off the bypass, however, the motor decided that it was only going to rev to around 2500, and then cut out! As soon as the revs drop below that, off she goes again, sweet as a nut. Now I'm pretty sure that all I need to do is reset the ECU, but I just wanted to be sure before doing so.

That's where you guys come in...

Ok, it's not MOT time and I want to be 100% sure that I get it through without having to beat lumps out of the tester to convince him it's legal.

Where do I need to look for the information that tells the tester that it doesn't neet to be cat tested?

Well, it's been a little while since I posted, but now I have more time to spend on here, I intend to make a regular appearance.

The car is presently off the road having failed the MOT on a couple of minor points. The first was the suspension. The springs on the old JIC coilovers were stupidly hard. So much so that three of them have shattered near the top of the spring, making the handling interesting to say the least. lol

The replacements are to be collected this Friday, and are from the old Pheonix Power prepared car that James from IMOC used to own (pic shown below):

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/80.jpg

Rears are HKS coilovers that show very, very little use, and the fronts are Ohlins. Both can be seen in the following pics:

Rears:
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/81.jpg

Fronts:
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/82.jpg

The front brake disk & calipers are also shot, so replacements are on the way. Once that lot is fitted, the car will be declared fit for the road by my brother in-law and I'll be back in business.

The car has been utterly faultless for well over a year now. The V6 starts first time, every time, and still returns better MPG than my wife's 1.4 Renault Clio despite me driving it like I stole it most days. :) The low down torque still makes me chuckle, and the top end scream still makes my spine tingle. It's a great all rounder that provides an intoxicating soundtrack that I would recommend to any MR2 owner. I'd be lying if I said I don't miss the kick in the back the turbo provides, but the lack of fiddling, and constant fettling is very welcome. That said, when I have a little more of the folding stuff, I still plan to supercharge it!

Once the refurbished wheels are finished and the sussies and brakes are back on, I'll post a few pics of the old girl. I needs a bit of a clean at the moment, as it's been sitting in the lane at the side of my house for a couple of weeks doing jack shite! lol

Great to be back...

New suspension is now fitted to the car, and I have to say... what a difference!

These are what came off... :freak3:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/180.jpg

When I had the full set finally off the car, I was absolutely astounded at their condition. They are totally wrecked! Springs are shattered, the tubes have rusted to pieces and overall, they're just scrap.

The two rear units were around 2 inches different in hight when stood next to each other! No wonder the car was a little wayward through the bends... :lol

Anyway...

New HKS coliovers fitted to the rear...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/185.jpg

All in all, a very uneventful afternoon apart from a couple of stubborn drop link nuts that had to be "persuaded" to come off. lol

Ride hight is a few mm higher, but the level of control has increased 100 fold. The drive is now very compliant, and the front no longer washes out when you make a sudden changes of direction. I tried provoking some serious understeer, and with the old setup, the front end would have just taken the straightest line to the kerb, but now, turn in is instant, and there's a level of front end grip I've never had in an MR2.

Just awaiting the new brakes and I can get it MOT'd and back on the road. :driving:

Later guys,

Earl

Great to hear mate. One thing you might want to do is have an alignment done with the new suspension going on there - or maybe open a trade account with Camskills lol

I'm amazed how poorly coilovers deal with conditions in the UK. I had a set of coilovers that were supposedly a few years old and they really were not fairing well at all. Also looking on ebay, the amount of coilovers for sale that are leaking or seized isn't good.

I'd def have the Ohlins though! Like rocking horse poo :)

The time has come gents. The car will soon be up for sale to make way for something a little more family orientated.

New MOT from this Friday, 6 months tax shortly after, and ready for the road.

The 3VZ-FE in this car is the lowest mileage example Woodsport have sourced, with just 55k at conversion. Since then, the car has covered just a further 12k, making a total of just 67k. Still, without doubt, the lowest mileage V6 MR2 in the country. The engine is like new! It starts first time, every time, and still returns in excess of 30mpg!!

Before the car is sold, the Enkei RP-01 wheels will be refurbished in black, and the lips polished.

Bodywork wise, the yellow is still in fine fettle, but as with any yellow MR2, it's showing sign of fading in a few places (Nothing a good buffing won't fix though) and has a couple of minor stone chips on the front bumper.

Interior has been upgraded to full leather and is in perfect condition throughout.

As can be seen earlier in this thread, the car now has Ohlins/HKS suspension, and also
refurbished brakes.

More pictures to follow, and a full ad in the for sale section. Keep a look out...

The car now has a new MOT and is taxed for 6 months.

The wheels will be refurbished towards the end of the month, and there's a new gearbox going in, as syncro on 2nd gear has always been a bit dodgy. The new box is being collected this weekend and fitted next weekend.

New rear wheel bearings to be fitted whilst the hubs are out.

Driving the car now is a real treat. The new suspension is firm yet compliant, and provides a lovely ride.

The car will be on sale from the start of next month if anyone should be interested.

Regards,

EarL
