Beginning to get there now with getting all the info and parts together so thought the easiest way to get my questions answered was to start a build thread and satisfy your need for pics!!

A few pics to start (please jump to the end if you just want to answer questions!)

The MR2:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/425.jpg

Dug out an Apexi filter I had for my scoob and with a fitting kit off ebay the Camry is sounding a lot more interesting:

The Camry that's about to be destroyed for a good cause

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/429.jpg

And finally for now, my engine mount turned up on Friday from 4veesix, cheers for the quick delivery, looks like a decent bit of kit that will save one of the head aches I'm expecting

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/430.jpg

Now just a couple of questions for now, don't worry there'll be more.

1. Does anyone have a standard NA flywheel for sale or know where i can get one, I need to get one modified prior to stripping the engine from the MR2 as garage time is going to have to be as short as possible.

2. I got an insurance quote yesterday which reminded me I will need my certificate for the Clifford alarm, as I can't find this anywhere does anyone know if insurance companies accept a report from an installer to say that a CAT 1 is fitted and is in working order?

Thanks but I just get a message that I don't have permission to access that page?

Tried searching through the for sale section but only find Firdanza's and really only wanting a standard flyywheel.

Ah its because your a small member, you need to have big membership, it only costs a tenner, and the amount of help and info you get on here its a small price to help support TB.

Your right about the help/info, found out loads already just by trawling through the posts.

Small progress made this week, managed to get a lock up neaer my house so moved the MR2, hadn't been started in two years and with a charged battery fired up first turn of the key.

Postie delivered my flywheel modified by FourVeeSix, complete with Ollie proof instructions!!

The Camry engines coming out tomorrow, finally starting to be able to do something other than tidy up the car because of it being sitting for so long.

Can't believe the level of renewed interest I have in the 2 now with this project, had completely lost all interest and was considering getting rid of it but after just sitting in it getting towed to my new lock-up it felt great!! Can't wait to be back behind the wheel and with the V6 behind my head.

Not a lot of progress lately, well not directly anyway. Bought my next door neighbours shed off him as he's selling up so been getting light/power and a workbench etc into that. So I've now got a workshop/spraybooth!

Started doing a bit of painting today:

Got my radiator recored and got hold of an extra fan:

And some more shiney bits from eBay!:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/05/199.jpg

Hopefully get moving a bit more on the car now although I wasn't going to bother painting all the bits up etc but will have to now after seeing the swaps on here! Decided to take my time and do everything just now while it's off the road and be patient about getting it back.

A bit of progress the last week or so, Stripped all the suspension off and now gone from painting nothing, to painting everything!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/3.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/4.jpg

So this weeks plan is to get the front suspension back together and get the engine out of the 2, it's all disconnected just needs dropped down and got a borrow of an engine lifter late last night so ready to go when I can get a hand from someone.

DougieG

It was out!!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/13.jpg

Got a hand from the old man and it came out surprisingly easier than expected, if the V6 goes in with twice the hassle I'll be a happy bunny!!

Only problem at the moment is the starter motor is stuck to the box, soaked it in WD and hopefully it will shift tomorrow night.

OlberJ
03-06-2008, 23:38
Make sure the bolts are undone and fuck the starter with a hammer, it will come but it'll be a pig.

Putting the V6 back in and hanging it is no more of a hassle than takin out the 3S.

Good progress sir.

Got a full polybush kit from eBay, it came from Amber Performance though but they don't seem to be trading on eBay now.

Well got some bonus progress done tonight, didn't expect to get anything done as it is my Mum's 60th, but managed to get an hour at the garage before I had to visit! Got the bolt that snapped in the distributor cap drilled and tapped and got the box off the engine.

Also the front engine mount polybush wouldn't fit for some reason so it gave the old man an excuse to use his lathe and slim it down a bit to fit.

phd68
05-06-2008, 11:52
Had exactly the same problem myself with the front polybush. Once trimmed, it fitted nicely and now the engine hardly moves at all in the bay.

Is this plug, from Camry loom supposed to plug onto the gear box? It looks like it would fit if the yellow bit in the middle is off or do I need the one from the mr2?:

I think that first connection I've seen on one of woodsy's threads and he had it blocked off with a rubber hose + screw in the end. Can't remember what it's for though. EGR related maybe?

OlberJ
11-06-2008, 22:20
Yep, block off the pipe on the end of the ACIS.

That's the gearbox reversing light on the 2nd pic, you need the Mr2 plug from your old loom and solder that onto the Camry loom.

Thanks everybody, must say I was a bit apprehensive about starting this on my own as a bit more than anything else I've taken on but the help on here is proving to be a lifeline and the encouragement helps keep you going!

Last few bits and pieces turned up yesterday, blanks plates from Owen and my ISCV back from Paul, Cheers all:thumbsup:

Made up a pipe for the expansion last night, just need to stick a couple of clips on it now. Got my wheels back powder coated this morning, will get some pics later today, well happy with them though.

Rebuilt my shocks last night with the Koni's so ready to go on tonight. And as long as the exhaust parts turn up today I'll hopefully get an exhaust built this weekend. Really happy with the ongoing progress now, I can now see the day when I'll be :driving:

A good days progress today, wasn't happy with the gear cable being so close to my exhaust so extended the shield:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/68.jpg

Then speaking of exhausts, my dad came round to do the welding up and between us we knocked this together:

I like how you retained the mounting point on the exhaust - Nice y pipe, how's ground clearance

DougieG
14-06-2008, 22:59
how's ground clearance

Just got my fingers crossed on that at the moment, putting the suspension back together tomorrow, left it off to give more room today. Should hopefully be ok though, looks to be roughly an inch below the lowest part of the subframe, looking on other posts, looks roughly the same height as Huubs. Just might need to be careful around speed humps!

DougieG
15-06-2008, 20:02
Not such a good day today! Got one side of the suspension on no problem then when I went to tighten the TCA on the other side the captive bolt in the subframe snapped off the weld, after a lot of swearing and struggling the only option was to put a hole in the other side of the subframe:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/105.jpg

So a question for people in the know about MOT's, can I fit a blanking grommet to allow me to get to this again or does it need to be welded up?

Eventually got all the back suspension on put wheels on to check clearances of my exhaust only for the wheel I had at the garage to be flat, so best guess for now is that I have 2-3" of clearance.

Quick pic of the pipe I made for the expansion pipe:

Nice pipe, if you weld the captive nut back in, then it shouldn't matter if you weld the hole back up. Also I don't think the suspension is going to be stripped again anytime soon.

Nice pipe, if you weld the captive nut back in, then it shouldn't matter if you weld the hole back up. Also I don't think the suspension is going to be stripped again anytime soon.

I'm not sure I can get a welder in to weld up the captive nut, I was thinking along the lines of it not coming off again as well and just weld it up and hope for the best!

Bev
16-06-2008, 00:26
Your other option would be to find a piece of steel tubing that fits perfectly over the bolt diameter, and find a longer bolt. Then take your take your crossmember off drill the mount side to the OD of the tubing, put the tube through the corssmember, and make a blanking plate to fit the far side over that gaping hole. Drill the blanking plate the same size as the OD of the tubing also. Then remove the blanking plate and tube and weld it so the weld will sit inside the crossmember. Put it all in then weld the polymount side of the tube to the crossmeber. Grind it all flat, then weld a washer to the far side of the crossmember. So, you'd effectively have a tube all the way through your crossmember, and a nut on the far side.

It'd be a fair bit of work but would be worth it in the long run if you're wanting to get your crossmember off again easily without having to make another hole in it.

As an afterthought, you'd want to put the bolt through the tube before welding the blanking plate to the crossmember and the tube to the polymount end before grinding both ends flat. That way it'd be allgined properly.

Your explaining was spot on, knew exactly what you meant lol

I'm not a welder by any stretch of the imagination so am going to get someone to look and see if we can reweld the captive nut and then patch up the hole. Less work I think and hopefully that bolt won't need to come out again while I own the car anyway, It's the first time it's been out in 13 years so another 13 should do it fine ;)

DougieG
16-06-2008, 11:56
Well to put myself in a better mood last night I refitted the 40 bolts round the rim of my alloys again, replaced the gold ones that were all pitted and corroded with stainless steel ones. Powder coating has come up pretty well should look good on the car:

Planning to start the wiring tomorrow so first question before I start:

I've read a couple of mentions on other build posts that when connecting the power to the fuse box you don't need the black wire as per Paul's guide. Am I right that instead of the step on page 47 in the guide I disconnect the two fuses and connect these straight into the fuse box to power up the box?

Everything else I assume is still as per the guide?

DougieG
27-06-2008, 22:14
Right quick check with a multimeter tonight and these two cables are connected to the one mentioned in the guide and the feed from the starter so assuming that's the right ones to use.

Filled all the fluids tonight, gear oil, oil and coolant, no major leaks anyway so, so far so good! Handbrake reconnected so just got to double check everything and wire it up and stick the wheels on :jump:

One other problem I could do with some help on, the rev counter won't work. Wired up as per Paul's guide,(I had two black wires in the fuse box but tested for the one that went to the clocks) but nothing on the rev counter???

Mr Woods to the rescue yet again!!! Cheers mate!

I'd connected on to the wrong wire :hidesbehi

Rev counter working, oil light fixed, re-loomed all the cables and just made a bracket for the coil etc.

That's it for tonight though, knackered!

Wheels on tomorrow, engine lid etc. then hopefully get a test drive :driving:

Just got my fingers crossed on that at the moment, putting the suspension back together tomorrow, left it off to give more room today. Should hopefully be ok though, looks to be roughly an inch below the lowest part of the subframe, looking on other posts, looks roughly the same height as Huubs. Just might need to be careful around speed humps!
It isn't a problem. I ran my y-pipe beneath the crossmember as well. It's centered between the wheels, so it's the last spot that you'd hit while going over a speed bump or through a dip. :)

Well turns out it was all going too well!

Went to drive it today and no power, turns out I've still only got a four pot!

Bit of investigating and I've got a spark at the two problem cylinders, when testing the injectors though they don't pulse? The ones that are working fine have a constantly changing voltage, but the other two are just static at the battery voltage.

Traced the cables and they run from the ECU to the injectors fine, and the power from the fuse box is fine.

Any ideas anyone?

Conor
29-06-2008, 18:54
Sure that they're properly seated? Maybe the connectors have crud on them. Constant voltage doesn't sound right, though.. Check resistance on those injectors.

Did murf not have a similar thing? Injectors were goosed.

DougieG
29-06-2008, 19:35
Pretty sure it's not the injectors, swapped two over and the problems on the same cylinders, almost certain it's the problem with the constant voltage, no idea what's causing it though. The wires are connected from the ecu to the injectors, checked that. Can't see how something could be up with the ecu but don't know what else could have caused it.

DougieG
29-06-2008, 21:17
If its reading a constant voltage it means the ecu isnt pulsing the grounds for those two injectors, which is a little odd.
According to the diagram the injectors are spliced into the harness in pairs, with 5+6, 3+4, and 2+1 all eventually going to a single white/red power feed wire. Possibility of a broken joint on that feed line killing one of the pairs?
Measure the volts at the offending injector plugs and see what you have there for a start, you should see 12 volts on the one side of the injector plug and nowt on the other,(pull the plugs off the injectors to test).
If youve got 12 volts and the other injectors are pulsing fine then its looking like an ecu fault maybe.

Getting 12 volts at all injectors, just no pulse at the 2, it's the two next to each other on the front bank on the left looking from the back of the car, 4+6, I did think it could be the power because I found where they were all spliced when I pulled them back to join up but would appear not to be.

Only thing making sense now is the ecu, just strange as it was working fine in the camry, positive nothing was connected up to it that could have damaged so baffled.

Anyway, anyone know where I can get hold of another ECU?

DougieG
30-06-2008, 08:38
The two wires are continuous to the plugs, checked that, will check tonight to see if there down to earth somehow. I could run a wire straight to the injector from the ECU, that then eliminates everything bar the ecu itself, will try cleaning the pins first though.

Thanks for the suggestions

DougieG
30-06-2008, 21:18
Right one problem sorted and another arises!

Cleaned all connections, swapped ignition leads with the ones that were originally on the Camry to be on the safe side, now idles nice and smooth and on six.

Ollie, yes it sounds mint!!

Next problem though - pulls fine until 3000rpm then flat as a pancake, no more go. Now this is exactly what it was doing with the 2.0 litre in which makes me think it must be down to the fuel pump. Almost positive it can't be anything to do with the swap as it's an identical problem.

Pissed off as was hoping the swap would solve the problem, on the plus side I know that my old engine is fine so there's a 45k engine available!

Revs perfect as high as you want when sitting but as soon as there's a load on it won't pull. Anybody had experience of this? Sound like it could be the pump, or something else?

phd68

Fuel filter? Kinked/ restricted fuel line? I take it you didnt replace the fuel pump with an uprated item when your engine was out?

DougieG
01-07-2008, 12:33
No I didn't replace the pump, might have been a bit easier when the engine was out but never mind that's life!

Fuel filter was replaced and all pipes look fine so have ordered a new pump. Will try to get the tank out tonight and hopefully get the pump and tank back in tomorrow.

Garbe
01-07-2008, 13:46
Dropping the tank is a little easier when the enignes out, however, the biggest issue is removing all the bits before the tank can come out. Try and get a turbo pump, unless you want a walbro, which is a bit noisey for my liking. (I recently changed mine).

Also whilst the tanks out, check your heater hard pipes, there's a weak point in the d/s side one on the mounting tab just as it goes over the tank.

Garbe

Conor
02-07-2008, 21:02
^^^ Ya. It's best if you dump the fuel out of it first, too. Doing it with a couple gallons (several liters?) in it is no biggie, but the more you have in there, the tougher it gets. I usually start by shoving the back end up first and making sure everything clears the opening in the rear firewall. And then I lift the front end up just enough by hand to slide a floor jack beneath it, which I use to shove it all the way up and hold it in place while I strap it back in.

DougieG
03-07-2008, 09:12
Didn't get round to getting the tank back i last night, drilled and tapped the 6 bolts that snapped that hold the covers on the floor and fitted the new pump to the carrier:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/07/17.jpg

Should get the tank back in tonight, hopefully that'll be the problem sorted (fingers crossed).

DougieG
03-07-2008, 22:34
Well now I'm completely flummoxed and very pissed off. Swapped the pump tonight put everything back together and still got the same problem.

Car will rev as high as you want when sitting still, as soon as you start to drive it goes completely flat at about 4k and won't accelerate. As I said this is exactly what it was doing with the 2 litre in and the only thing I would have though that could affect the V6 as well could be the fuel pump.

So before I pull all my hair out, or kick holes in the nearest wall, has anyone got any suggestions for what else could be causing this.

Cheers.

The only other thing I can think of is the CAT/exhaust, after a lot of head scratching, the only thing i can think now is that the CAT has maybe collapsed. Going to try that tonight with the decat pipe.

Does this sound like a possibility?

phd68
04-07-2008, 15:59
Its a possibility but sounds doubtful as its ok standing still. Dont suppose the clutch is slipping is it? Oxy sensors/wiring causing it to run lean? Is your timing good? I know that this engine is quite sensitive to timing advance when the revs get higher, but i'm afraid i'm not an expert on the subject.

04-07-2008, 16:29
I have a similar problem with mine Dougie - it doesn't like to rev above around 4.5k (v6-time).

Can hear it pinking under WOT aswell.

How have you joined the fuel pipes? I'm thinking I may have created a restriction there, or filter/pump isn't doing waht it should.

DougieG
04-07-2008, 19:52
:jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

It's the exhaust!!!

Half the CAT had collapsed into pieces and has then went into the exhaust and has blocked it up. Drove it down the road with no exhaust/CAT, what a difference, actually pulled away! Rev'd right to 6k no problems. Probably smashed a few windows in the vicinity with the noise right enough!!

Tried it with the exhaust and decat on and back to being flat so must be the actual exhaust, not just the CAT. Rattled the exhaust about and a few pieces of CAT fell out! Must be fine when standing still as not nearly so much pressure as when you are driving.

So advice time again, what kind of exhaust to buy and where from, opinions please.

Got a few little jobs done today, made a bracket for the AFM, tidied up the remaining wiring and wired up the retractive mirrors I bought from Harry through ebay.

Think it was Garbe who asked on the other thread how difficult it was, not too bad just time consuming following the wires and soldering everything up. I would try to get the plug to fit the mirror ecu though as the set I got didn't have this and I had to fit each pin individually using 2amp spade connectors, trouble is insulated ones are too wide so had to heat shrink each one after crimping, not a major problem though and they worked first time! ;)

17-07-2008, 22:22
This car is driving me round the bend, I go from being over the moon to slitting my wrists in record time. Passed the MOT today, taxed it and went for the first proper spin  get out the town put the foot down everything feels good, hit about 5000rpm and the clutch slips like hell, up a gear and exactly the same thing

The only thing I can think is that I used the wrong bolts for the flywheel and the clutch plate is hitting the heads of the bolts and not getting a firm enough pressure on the flywheel. I used bolts that were the same thread/length but it wasn't until it was all back together that I read I should have used mk1 bolts. Can't hear any noise as if it's rubbing on bolts but probably wouldn't on the road anyway.

So 2 questions:

Does this sound like a plausible explanation?

And

I take it the easiest way to do the clutch will be to drop the engine/box as one and strip on the ground?

OlberJ

DougieG
17-07-2008, 23:02
Jim, did yours last a while though?

Mine slipped the first time I put the foot down, it wasn't as if I dropped a gear and floored it either, just came out of the 30's and sped up. I could understand it maybe slipping a bit if i was giving some abuse!

Think I'll put an uprated one in anyway when I take it out again. Just missed the group but too, damn. Just want to be able to drive the thing, not wait about now for a clutch to come from the states!

17-07-2008, 23:21
Good news about the running problem, bad news about the clutch mate. I'm a little confused about this whole slipping thing. I used a toyota item on mine that I got on ebay yonks before my swap, and its been fine for over a year. I drive around sensible, but occasionally do open it up and no probs. (touches wood)

I reckon it must be the blue print clutch. Definitely not the flywheel bolts, otherwise you'd know about it when the engines just running.

I'd have thought that you'd be able to easily hear the grinding if it was the flywheel bolts. Think about how much pressure the pressure plate exerts on the clutch disk. Then again, if it was hitting the fly bolts, it'd be forcing the clutch disk to go dome shaped. Definately not good. Could cause a exploding clutch disk. If you think this is the case, check it quick!

When you installed the clutch, did you make sure to degrease the living daylights out of your fly, clutch disk and your pressure plate with something like brake cleaner, isopropyl acolhol or MEK or something? That's another thing that can cause slippage. It's wierd that it's doing it at such high revs though. You'd think it'd do it under peak torque and load.

Also see you went with the modified 3s flywheel. Did you have it resurfaced?

Just came on to post some progress! I was worried about the clutch being out of shape as you suggested and was ready to strip everything down but a mate said to give it a few miles as we couldn't hear any scrapping which we would have thought you would have as well.
Went for a run of about 20miles taking it easy and gradually giving it a bit more right foot. Certainly a lot better now, not slipping like it was so hopefully it was just that the clutch plate/flywheel weren't cleaned up properly as it is feeling a lot better now. Was giving it a bit of stick towards going home and no slip!
Sure it's not the bolts now as it wouldn't have cleared up. Just thinking the worst case scenario when something goes wrong I think, usually ends up being that with me! So new clutch on the back burner just now, going to put a few more miles on it and see how it goes.

Well with all well with the swap for the minute (fingers crossed) I decided to make a start on modifying the air scoop I got from eBay. Unsurprisingly the fit was crap, it sat at an angle I wasn't happy with, hit the engine cover and the roof. So I bought a spare side panel cover to mount it on then went at it with a hacksaw and jigsaw tonight:

Original fit:

As Johny said they are Rogue low rise kits, not too bad to fit, couple of hours work. More work than i expected as they come as a bag of bolts and bits and pieces, but not difficult to put together.

They are quite expensive but you can't really blame Rogue as there's nothing else on the market so they've basically got it wrapped up. I do think that price should be for a fully built unit that bolts in rather than a kit that needs fully assembled. Top quality though and totally changes the front end in my opinion.

Finally got round to sorting my exhaust after the damage on the previous page. Got into my mates garage and on a ramp, makes live much easier than crawling about on the ground.

So redid the pie from manifold to where the cat bolts on, and went up and over the subframe.

Pipe after some manufacturing:

Made a join so that it can be removed without dropping the subframe:

Plenty clearance from everything and kept the flexi from the front bank and added another to take up any movement on the system:
