bob we have been working on your engine and havent started on the car itself yet, thats the relatively easy bit, dropping the old engine out.

The build threads are always a few days out of sync with the real world progress as i dont always get time to upload from my camera every night ,usually knackered when i get in,tons of images are coming though

Hi guys,

Just got back from Dublin, I did try to get online at a couple of internet cafe's but would you believe it TwoBrutal site was blocked due to adult content ffs...gave up in the end and decided to wait until I got home.

Anyway...cracking work there Paul...bay looks kinda empty without the old engine in there, but glad it will be going to a good home.

Can't wait to see how the V6 looks fitted into there. Is the front urethane engine mount (drilled one) still in one piece??

PS...what are the two black spray paint lines all about just below the drivers side engine mount?

Bob

Paul Woods
24-03-2008, 06:29
yeah the front mount is still intact.

Ive no idea what the two black marks are, something toyota do as ive seen that before.

snowtigger
24-03-2008, 13:02
it's to do with when they were on the conveyor being put together quality control issue and alignment, as some cars are pulled of the line for testing then get fed back into the system and they never take the spray paint of the panel cause it's no longer cost effective and doesn't detract from the car and the owner will never see it or know wot it is.

seen it done on the jaguar assembly line and asked the same question , was also funny if u use the wrong tool out of sequence when bolting in the engine and gear box and suspension an alarm and buzzer goes of and if u don't use the correct tool the whole production line shuts down untill it is rectified could watch them putting cars together for hours fascinating.

Paul Woods
25-03-2008, 19:20
today the gearbox got degreased, cleaned and painted....

Paul Woods
02-04-2008, 07:06
yes paul the only thing that bugs me about taking out the Y section is its v hard to retain an equal length exhaust length, but ive done this a few times now on the mk1 and nigels mk3 v6 without any noticeable ill effects.Im guessing its got to be better than with the factory Y.

never had a problem down the a1m 70 ish slow down for the new road works and the speed cameras, i thought paul said to keep it easy on the throttle till it's bedded every thing in for a few miles, i know he does a lot of shake down testing after hes finished the conversion to make sure that every thing is hunky dory.

the pipe work looks very nice more free flowing get rid of that horrible t bit.

My butt-dyno says there's definitely a good chunk of horsepower being eaten up by the miserable perpendicular "T pipe" that comes stock on 3VZ/1MZ engines.. :)

Yes please mate. I really want to do anything that can be done in the preliminary stages to flow as much as possible, so when I'm ready to supercharge the motor, it'll take full advantage of the mods.

i dont have a dyno of my current set up - standard T piece, but when i get my full custom system on at the start of may i will let you know! for the money i hope it makes the world of difference! my current one is fucked. anyone else here suffer from the flexi section letting go regularly???? the turbo engine split one and now the V6 has - time for stronger (poly) engine mounts i think?!! can these be bought for our V6's or is it something we have to modify??

Poohbear
03-04-2008, 17:27
Front and rear poly mounts can be bought from Speed-source and are plenty strong enough...in fact a bit too strong as I had to drill some holes through my front one to reduce cabin vibration.

Or RS components for the stuff to fill the mounts, a bit messy but hell of a lot cheaper.

Front and rear poly mounts can be bought from Speed-source and are plenty strong enough...in fact a bit too strong as I had to drill some holes through my front one to reduce cabin vibration.

Bob

ah ok, but arent our mounts moddified?? i forget which one has been changed and which are stock! so are the front and rears a straight swap? this would greatly reduce engine movement under acceleration, so less stress on the exhaust flexi, right??!!

My butt-dyno says there's definitely a good chunk of horsepower being eaten up by the miserable perpendicular "T pipe" that comes stock on 3VZ/1MZ engines.. :)

http://www.woodsport.org/forum/images/recovered/2005/04/52.jpg

Just a thought....could look and work quite well if doing a system from scratch...why not run the downpipes one to each side with 2 silencers meeting in the middle with twin outlets in a centre-exit formation (Boxster-style)? Wanted to do that on my old turbo but it just wasn't right for a 4-pot. When you're starting with a downpipe from each bank of cylinders, a bit more feasible though.

Just a thought, as I say.

AFAIK the front/rear/gearbox mounts are all stock with the addition of an adaptor mounting for the driverside engine mount.

The ones to be concerned with re:engine movement and it's effects on the flexi joints are the front and rear, which are the ones Speed-source sell see pics below.

Speed-source front mount after modification to reduce cabin vibration. I dont have a picture of it refitted to the car but you get the idea.

Front mount on the Mk2 usually falls to bits when you remove it. Replace it with one from a turbo or use a poly one. the left and right mounting rubber can stay standard except you will also need the modified engine mount for the right hand side. poly busing the rear mount is personal choice or it can stay standard.

I only poly bushed the front mount and subframe bushes. Very little vibration noticed. And the engine hardly moves at all in the bay.

That's a lovely piece of workmanship but what's the ground clearance like with that set up?
Fine. It has passed over gobs of speed bumps without so much as a scratch! The Greddy lip on the front of the car scrapes all the time, though! ;)

Just a thought...
I gave thought to having a little curly-que put into the middle section to keep the runners equal length before the y-merge, but cost and space dictated this setup.. I also refuse to run without a catalytic converter, so that considerably restricts my available real estate for wonky exhaust paths :)

Great idea, though.. I would do a lot of things differently if I had the swap to do over.

matt your car used to be a turbo so we re used the front turbo torque mount, they are up to the job as long as they are fit.

On the NA's the front torque mount is garbage and wont cope of hold the v6 under torque properly, and we replace all of these with a poly mount.

It could be your turbo one has failed matt, they are usually up to the job, upgrade to a poly one and that should stop flexis cracking.

Will text you if it's going to be late or early Paul.

On the positive side for future V6 swappers, we informed our insurers today about the swap (Chris Knott acting for Highway) and our premium has only increased by £44 with all mods declared :) must be because we are OLD!!

i was 24 when i had mine done a year ago, previously i was a mk2 turbo with arround 5 grands worth of work done, all mods listed. with the V6 'only' having 200 bhp, my premium went down by like 400quid!!!!! sweet! went down another 400 this year as im now in the 25 and over bracket!! wohoo!!!!

Well that was an interesting trip :)

Caught the bus @ 7.00am from King's Lynn to Peterborough Rail Station to pick up the train to Durham. Settled into first class for the 2 1/4 hour trip up, all day breakfast ciabatta and coffee going down very nicely indeed :)

Get to Durham @ 10.50 and within 10 mins Paul is there to pick us up and ferry us to his workshop about 10 mins away (top service mate). On arrival my baby is sitting waiting outside the workshop as clean as it can be seeing as the heavens had just opened.

Not sure what it is about people going to pick there cars up from Paul (jinxed he is with the weather hey Jinja??)

Anyway quick gander at the car and the side strips that Paul has kindly renovated and painted for me and it's time to open the engine lid and take my first real look. Let me tell you the pictures don't do Pauls work justice in the flesh it is stunning.
Next thing is to turn the key and start the car....omfg what a sound...after the initial 2000 rpm tickover until warm the engine settles down to a lovely soft burble that can only come from a V6 or V8, couple of presses of the throttle and all hell breaks loose sounds gorgeous...at this point Maggie will tell you i'm grinning like a cheshire cat and raring to go lol.

Back into the workshop to have a look round at the other conversions Paul is doing and to pay him his dues. Some advice from Paul with regards to some checks to do in a few days and we are ready to leave.

With Pauls words of advice ringing in my ears about keeping it to 4000 rpm for the first 100 miles we set off on the trip home...after some slow pottering around to get off the trading estate we turn on to the main road and I start to drive it as I drove the 3S-GE...oops straight up to 5K in second...need to be a bit lighter on the throttle for a little while, this V6 spins up really quickly by comparison.

After a stop to brim fill the petrol tank we set off down th A1 for the monotonous section of the journey home. First thing we notice at cruising speed 3000 rpm is how much less droney it is..it's very quiet indeed (I thought with the de-cat it would be really loud)

As we get 100 miles or so on the engine I start to have a play booting it 5th gear from 2.5K to 5K....the surge is totally unexpected it just pulls and pulls from nothing...I loved my 3S-GE to bits but it had nowhere near the grunt that this V6 does, god knows what it will be like when I start to give it full beans. Noise wise...let's say it's easily as good as the 3S-GE and it's going to be addictive :)

Butt dyno feels like 220bhp but we will find out for sure at the first opportunity.

As we near the end of our journey I get Maggs to video some footage as we come off a roundabout, I'm giving it roughly 5K in every gear, I'll let you be the judge see video below...excuse the quality it was taken with a phone cam.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/04/34.jpg (http://s16.photobucket.com/albums/b13/Poohbear9044/?action=view&current=V6_Revs.flv)

Anyway we got home without any issues or problems, car is running sweet as a nut, a real testament to Pauls skills. Popped into Tesco to brim fill the car with petrol again and worked out the the V6 returned 32mpg so about the same as the 3S-GE :)

Thats first drive gives you such a great feeling.
Bob, what revs were you seeing at 70mph. As I remember before the swap you were saying 3250rpm or there abouts.

Poohbear
05-04-2008, 18:44
I'm seeing about 3800 rpm @ 70 but that's because the tacho hasn't yet been calibrated. The change of resistor and variable potentiometer are in place in my original MR2 tacho...courtesy of Paul and Sengts write-up so when I get time I will be having a twiddle to put it right :)

PS...Can I be added to the swap register purty please :)
