View Full Version : Psychomikes rev3na Mk1 swap

Paul Woods

Well this one is a first for us,we are going to be fitting a rev3NA lump into this mk1 for mike,im betting it turns out to be a little screamer!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/02/282.jpg

And the horribleness that is the 4age....

Another first for Woodsport.

I quite like my ickle 4age revy little thing that it is.

OlberJ
28-02-2008, 22:47
The 3S will rev to about the same, only has about 60 more BHP and a dod of torque more.

This will be interesting to see.

I think its a very cost effective swap and will be interesting to see the results.

i fancied doing this too, should be interesting as they sound great and it should be a very cheap way to bump up the power!

Paul Woods
29-02-2008, 06:48
eyes closed everybody.... imagine how a rev3 mk2 pulls... now remove 300kgs and shape it like a dart with superb handling.... yum yum.

Gary Symons

Imagine it would go quite nicely, especially if you threw a nice lightweight flywheel on it

Hi all,

Great to see the thread started Paul, I'll be checking this out regularly!

In terms of the engine choice I realise a few guys will be skeptical but it's something different and I like that. Should also keep things simpler for Paul but the engine/ECU is actually from a Gen6 Celica, so we are yet to see how it works out :)

Looking forward to this Paul :)

Jiff Lemon
29-02-2008, 09:27
Looking forward to this one too; people rave about the supercharger with a big pulley and here's the equivilant package. I agree with Gary - get a fidanza on there!

I dropped the engine out in under an hour on friday so today we said goodbye to the engine mounts...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/69.jpg

And i dropped the fuel tank and fitted the celica pump...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/70.jpg

Here is the boot wall cut, this is for access to plenum stuff and for plenum space,it will be reconstructed around the plenum as per the 3s-gte swaps

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/71.jpg

next the WS 1.5 jig went in....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/72.jpg

And after cutting the mount plates out they were welded in....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/73.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/74.jpg

The passenger side still needs a top plate fitting, then the whole lot needs seam sealing and painting.

Now you've had a close look at things what's the condition of the bodywork like back there?

I don't see any plates welded in on the arches so i'd say pretty sound

Hmmm,

I currently have a poor little mk1 sitting outside gathering dust and rust, and will soon (well, give me a few months to get the V6 in the mk2) have a spare Rev4 3S-GE... Real pity I couldnt put the 2 together (as they will both be sold for buttons) as I bet this will be a great junior mk1.5 package when finished...BooHoo

Looking good...

OlberJ
03-03-2008, 22:25
Hmmmm, does this make it a Mk1.4 or a Mk1.25?

Mk1.4 sounds better to me.

Whore of Babylon
04-03-2008, 04:15
Or mabie there could be a 1.5 and 1.5T?? and for mk2, 2.6, 2.6Z, 2.6T or 2.6TT

Paul Woods
04-03-2008, 06:54
yeah i think it was just under an hour to remove, not sure...it all came apart very easily,im pretty sure it can be done sub 45 mins with a bit of planning.

rosssco,be very careful if you ever think about using your rev4,the later ones came with the transponder immobiliser gubbins, which you would need to fire her up,i will shut up if you have the whole mk2 sat there lol

Paul Woods
04-03-2008, 18:20
more progress.... today saw the final welding done on the engine mounts and seam sealed up...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/97.jpg

Also fabricated the rest of the boot wall and sealed that too....

Also the fuel tank went back in,and i made a heat shield for the front wall....

Paul, my Dad mentioned he noticed a small hole near the engine bay by the offside sill. If you do happen to notice anything like that then can I ask you to patch it up? I'm planning to keep the car long term so it's in my interest.

Extra hobnob vouchers for you of course!

Paul Woods
06-03-2008, 18:33
ok set the camera back to "dont be such a stupid twat woods" mode and the colours are much more realistic.... today i concentrated on mikes engine, its a gen6 celica 3s-ge,the wirings a bit alien but nothing i cant handle....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/113.jpg

Ohh, you have been busy Paul, nice work mate ;)

I don't know how you cleaned that gearbox up but I had a crack at it myself. I picked it up from a guy who had it sat in an exposed shed in his garden and it came from a motor that blew a big end. Whatever ended up on and inside the box was horrendous... hours with a wire brush and some petrol/degunker... lol

Will be checking out woodsport online throughout the day tomorrow :)

Paul Woods
07-03-2008, 18:58
today i hoisted the whole lot into the bay, first problem we hit that doesnt happen on the turbos is the engine lid catch was never going to clear the plenum..... so off it came! mike is it ok if we fit bonnet pins?

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/129.jpg

And the engine in place..... i have to say this looks more at home in a mk1 bay than any other conversion ive ever done, and i absolutely love it.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/130.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/131.jpg

Makes you wonder why Toyota fitted the alternator where they did on the MK2's down near the subframe because I know if they had mounted it in that position there would have been bags of room. That space on a MK2 is empty of anything else (at least on an NA)

This is my motor in it's previous home

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/03/134.jpg

You can see it's pretty easy access to the alternator...

I've got to say, Paul, that looks awesome in the bay. I never imagined it to look so snugg in there. Hopefully this thing is going to run as well as it looks! Apart from the boot catch are there any other issues with the size of it? I'm guessing the dipstick is on the other side of the block in MR variants but that's not really a problem.

About fitting boot pins. I'll leave that up to you mate. My main ask is that I want the car too look pretty much stock to the average guy. Boot pins shouldn't be a problem, is there any drawback in using them? On a related note I was also considering a 'papal' front bonnet mod... it's something I wanted to speak to you about but never had the chance...

It's looking good, you won't have the turbo to get used to like mine but you will have loads of grunt!!!

Paul Woods
08-03-2008, 07:33
hi mike, there are no other issues at all space wise, hell im even thinking about sticking the battery tray back in the engine bay theres that much space, that means no relocation up front.... will have to see on that one though. The dipstick is easy to get to,everything is really....plus ive made that access hatch in the boot which doesnt lose you any boot space, just lets you get access to the rear of the engine if need be.

I will get some bonnet pins ordered

10-03-2008, 00:46
hmmm rev3 170ish bhp lite weight will watch this with interest can u go and fit a turbo motor after as the mounts are the same?.

Paul Woods
10-03-2008, 06:59
you sure can,the mounts on the chassis are identical.but the torque mounts are different on the NA box,so the turbo ones would need fabricating, but apart from that the turbo motor will fit straight in on these chassis mounts.

Marksman
10-03-2008, 07:05
Great potential there chaps. MK2 comes in for V6, old engine sold to MK1 owner helping to fund V6 swap. A year later the MK1 2l comes in for upgrade to 2l turbo with trade in of old torque mounts etc. Paul, you're gonna have to give these engines names as you'll be seeing them so often!

yep just small points but twincam and woodsport plz turn em round paul as they don't look very pro, not quite a numpty club thread though eh olber?.

probably put it on when engine was out of the car still a top install though, one small thing i would have heat wrapped the exhaust it's not dear to do and may give u added bhp 1 or 2 not mega but a gains a gain and the plus side it would cover up those manky rusty pipes.

yes that battery terminal looks a bit too close for comfort ?.

back to front lettering.

That's because the engine is from a Celica ;)

OlberJ

Paul Woods
12-03-2008, 07:06
yes we put the woodsport on when the engine was out, does it matter?

theres an inch above the positive battery terminal, lots of room.

Jimi the original air filter hole is still accessible so you could fit some original looking intake piping going from the throttle body into the boot no probs at all.

Snowy usually there would be a heatshield covering the exhaust manifold pipes, which we dont have.... but im looking for one

13-03-2008, 06:54
its not as hard as a 3s-gte because theres no turbo gubbins to deal with so its slightly easier.

So is this like a Mk1.4?

OlberJ
13-03-2008, 10:01
So that'd make a V6Turbo or S/C a Mk1.7

A V8Turbo or S/C a Mk1.9

And Podges V8TT a Mk2!

Cannae be having that lol

I do wish you wouldn't use the term "fire up" to describe starting an engine swapped car for the first time!

14-03-2008, 19:30

16-03-2008, 14:04
Looks awesome Paul, you are a very talented guy and a credit to the MR2 community :)

What happened with the driveshafts. Did you go for the supporting shaft or unequal length?

Paul Woods
16-03-2008, 14:16
i settled for unequal length on this one mate, your celica ones were knackered on the CV joints,i couldnt rebuild them,so i stuck a pair of mk2 NA shafts on there

Paul Woods
19-03-2008, 19:17
well we drove this today and not as fierce as a mk1 v6 mind you but a very pleasant car to drive indeed

20-03-2008, 00:31
So to make from scratch but with a mk1 supplied, whats the cost all in Paul?

Paul Woods
20-03-2008, 06:39
for me to supply a mk1 as well? thats not something i do tommy.... but this swap costs a lot less than turbo, the labour is around the same as its basically the same job bar the intercooler stuff, but the donor engines will be peanuts.

21-03-2008, 18:29
glad to see you messing with celica wiring paul lol
its all going to help me when it comes round to wiring the 1mz up8O
everything got stalled on my build down to paint shop letting me down but ive found another guy willing to do her now car is going in to have engine bay sprayed on tuesday so fingers and toes crossed should have her back for friday and start putting some life back into her in the form of my nice shiny 1mz. the questions will be pouring in thick and fast after that so i will make a bulk purchase of hob nobs to get up to you

Paul Woods
21-03-2008, 19:03
no worries mate, glad to help... the celica wiring shared NO similarities to mr2 wiring though,it was a bit of a mare, but im a lot wiser about it now so we shouldnt have a problem

OlberJ
25-03-2008, 13:24
So what's the verdict on this then?

Has it delivered the thrills?

Thinking of this for the t-bar mibbes, then it'd be easily upgraded to V6 at a later date. It worth the effort?

PsychomIKE
25-03-2008, 13:31
I've not yet picked the car up so I'll let Paul answer that one for you!

OlberJ
25-03-2008, 13:40
Ah right, my bad lol

When you lookin at picking it up mate?

25-03-2008, 15:42

OlberJ
25-03-2008, 15:51
Ah nice one, take it you're quite excited then?

Do you stay oop north? Would really like to see how well this thing goes.

PsychomIKE
25-03-2008, 16:00
For sure I'm excited, can't wait to see how it goes. I've got to get some bushings sorted and an alignment made up before the car is back to running properly but I'm really looking forward to seeing how the engine side of things stands :)

Afraid I won't be able to stick around this time. Literally an early train from way down in the south west, pick the car up and straight back again :( Don't know if you're planning on seeing Paul in the week but I've no problems with a quick demo run if you are

OlberJ
25-03-2008, 16:05
Afraid i'll not be down for a coupla weeks but i'll settle for a full report and videos from yourself

Good luck with the trip matey!

snowtigger
26-03-2008, 21:50
she's a beauty fired up straight away sounded nice and meaty, why they never fitted this engine into a mk1 as standard would have made it a corker of a car.

u are a very luky boy.

OlberJ
26-03-2008, 22:31
Didn't realise you could feasibly use the N/A box on a turbo swap.

Guess with the longer 5th and LSD it'd be an absolute animal?

This is THE logical progression, Mk2N/A box with 3S, then 3SGTE, then V6 Turbo.

OlberJ
01-04-2008, 23:49
What brakes have you got on this then Mike? Have you upgraded them at all?

Am really considering this for the t-bar now. Would be pretty cheap for the parts as av already got the gearbox, driveshafts and a good clutch sitting there.

What else has been changed on the swap, gearcables shortened, new mounts etc, wiring, induction kit, some water pipes.

Hrrrrrrmmmmmm. :hmm:

IanC
30-04-2008, 09:51
what did it cost to supply and fit the mk2 na engine if you dont mind me asking?

Paul Woods
30-04-2008, 19:08
the conversion labour cost was around £1900 plus parts, but the big plus is the donor engine clip can be had for peanuts.
