Has anyone considered dropping a turbo diesel lump in a mk1?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just thought it might be interesting.

It is an interesting propersition, but what diesel lump would you use? One of the landcruiser/surf diesel lumps could possibly fit? Loads of torque to begin with and you could probably turn the fuel pump and boost up to produce another 20-30%.

1kzte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_KZ_engine) looks about right I thought, the intercooled 145bhp variant, 343 nm torque

yay it looks like im not the only one in here that wants to put a derv in a mk1
the only probs i came upon wer the gear links, i was gonna use my old corolla drev motor and box, but with the corolla motor in the front the links r facing the wrong way, i have just got a mk2 for the gearbox, in the next few weeks i am gonna try and fit the guts out ov the derv box and fit into mr2 mk2 an box,

Sweet!

I think it'd be rather fun - modern diesel engines are rather impressive!

all looks great, except for what transmission would you use?

You can modify the linkages so it comes out the other side of the box, so you can use the FWD box in the RWD layout of the Aw11, its been done before. I have a link somewhere, if your interested pm me and i'll trawel through my bookmarks for you.

I thought about diesel, the toque you can get from some of those lumps is unreal. My friend was telling me the other day about the diesel truck tunning with engines running 1.5k HP and 2k+ NM

You'd definitely need to use the matching gearbox, as the ratios wouldn't be anywhere near right and the torque would cause a normal gearbox some distress.
If you want a cheap tunable diesel lump, some of the Fiat ones can be tweaked to give a decent whack and the VAG ones as well.
I run a VAG 2litre TDi in my every day car and that gives me 190bhp and 300 lbft of torque, be rather swift in a light chassis!

Mondeo duratorq engine is pretty schweet... and a lot of them have the 6 speed box which would be even sweeter... I've seen people on the mondeo forums with 200bhp out of them with a bit of ecu tuning / filter / exhaust combo... they're cheap to pick up as well, though the engine is mahusive!

344bhp and 600+lb/ft

Does it have to be a V6? I know the Corolla D4D engines are pretty damned good...

Don't forget with the V6 diesel, you'll also need to find room for the obligatory turbo that goes with it.

Yeah, thats exactly the kind of thing that has got me thinking, I'm trying to persuade my old man to buy one of those, who did your remap?

I got mine done by the lads down @ DMS

Difference is night and day mate. It went from quick to laugh-out-loud fast. You really have to look at the Speedo to appreciate how quickly you're accelerating.

Woodsy, Nik and Jiff have all been for spin in it :)

Me and my dad have just had ours both done at amd, his is fairly quick now, a 330d at about 235bhp, mine is pretty nippy 320d putting out 200bhp.

I hadn't heard of dms, just googled them, I was working in southampton when I had mine done

Is yours just remapped then, because thats a serious hike from standard isn't it?

Yep. I know the fella, so I got a little more than standard ;)

They are 272bhp as standard, the standard remap gives you 334bhp - but I got the extra 10bhp and 15lb/ft as I know one of the crew!

I didn't know you could get extra bhp for mates!
What did they do extra?

Just a small tweak of the map :)

whats the auto box like? Thats the biggest put off for my dad

biteme
20-01-2008, 18:37
It suits the nature of the car very well. It's never going to compete with a manual, or a tiptronic, but it's not that kind of car.

All I can say is "give it a go". I love manuals, but this is a very very good autobox. And it's as tough as old boots.

On a side note, DMS can take the 535d (and the 335d) lumps up to 400bhp and over 700lb/ft - the engines will take it, relatively easily, but the autoboxes are "only" rated to 700lb/ft lol - so they've back it off to 600lb/ft which I'm sure is still plenty :)

i got an Alfa 156 2.4 diesel with 20v head. 225hp. dont like the drug dealer image of a 535d. especially if it has tinted rear windows.
