Evening folks! I'm Mark, current a 93 NA owner, mod on the OC, and design/feature co-ordinator for mr2only magazine (woaaaah, enough with the titles fella!).

My NA has been nothing but problems recently. Coolant leaks, loss of power, fuel guzzling and the likes...I think it's time to embrace the ol' student overdraft and go down the transplant route....so.....aside from Sir Wood's excellent packages, what are my offers? My current priority is COST, as this has been a rather sudden decision, so if anyone has advice on my best way to approach this, then please let me know!

Thanks to anyone that replies, and I look forward to getting to know all you crazy buggers a bit better!

I'd go the DIY route!
3vz-fe from www.jdmtigerjapanese.com will cost you $490 USD plus shipping ~$150.
A fly wheel for ~$300 dollars.
A custom Exhaust and new engine mounts and 2 weekends in the garage and your set!

Welcome Mark

As above there's certainly no reason why you shouldn't be able to do the swap yourself providing you have access to a little space and a few tools. Where abouts are you? There may well be a TB-er with a project on the go in your area who'd be willing to help out or at least have a chat and show you his as it were.

If the NA is still running then I'd recommend that you hunt out a Camry, remove the engine and ancillaries yourself (to keep the costs down and so that you know you have all the parts and all from the same revision off car). Then strip of the heads and change the headgaskets as these are the only real fault with the V6's. Don't be scared of high mileages as with an auto box and a bit of over-engineering they go on forever. Then sort out an engine mount and modified flywheel. Tony on this board can help with those. You're OK with your existing gearbox and driveshafts which is nice. Exhaust is a welding job, and the wiring and plumbing up are well documented here.

Tis all good!

Owen.

as above the cheapest way really is to have a go yourself, plus all the help you could ever ask for is here when you get stuck.... above all else its well worth the effort!

with all the right bits adapted flywheel tony. gasket set clutch kit water pump and a Camry look at about a grand u may want to change the timing belt if its a high miler but its not that deer on parts as owen says the hg gaskets are the only weak point on the v6 motor every thing else is nearly bullet proof plenty of people willing to give help and advice on here matey welcome aboard.

Look at what Garbe achieved; And prior to his swap the most he'd ever done was an oilchange!

DIY and also, you've just done some work and made a feature for the mag! :)

I was in the same boat as you on New Years eve. Now i'm up to my elbows in 3VZ-FE stripping and loving it. The help and advice you get on here is second to none. Check out my build thread for motivation !!!

Wow, thanks for the replies folks!

To be 100%....I really don't think I'm up to doing it DIY.....mechanically wise, I'm pretty rubbish! Basic servicing items, brakes etc are my limit so far unfortunately :( So I think I'd make a right mess of a swap!

So think of the sense of achievement you would feel. The V6 into Mk2 does seem to be one of the easier swaps, especially with Tony's bits!!

Aye, Mk2 is a doddle if you got the room to strip and rebuild the engine, well, do the HG's and detailing.

The mount and flywheel are taken care of and you already have the transmission.

All there is to it is bolting it together, lifting it onto the mounts, then connecting up fuel pipes, water pipes and the wiring ( feck off the rest of you lol ).

There's no welding to be done apart from the exhaust.

Are you not located up here somewhere Mark?

Read through a few of the DIYs threads there....nope nope nope! I'm not even gonna entertain the idea of trying it myself! Not at this point anyways!

Yup matey, Dundee! Fancy doing my swap? :D

Hi Mark
As jiff has said above, the most I had previously done was the basic oil filter, pads and discs. THe 'biggest' job was changing the suspension struts.

The swap is pretty straight forward, once you just take it a job at a time. It really is basic spannering, but a couple of weeks worth.

15-01-2008, 13:28
Yeh Garbe it was your thread that I just read through! All 16 pages! Looked like a heck of a job though!

Lets say I had 2 full weeks off work and uni and oculd go home to use the old mans industrial garage.....if I worked my ass off, and had all the bits and bobs there already, do you think it could be done within this time?

mark_a_thorpe
15-01-2008, 13:32
Also, is there a big writeup somewhere for the full swap? Long shot...

Hello Mark me 'ol chestnut.

Good idea with the swap mate and that is what I'm doing too. Hopefully be done by the end of next month.

As already advised it'd be cheaper for you to find a Camry and strip all the bits yourself (or get a mate who is good with mechanics). The engine will sit straight in with the help of a new engine mount from Tony who will have some new ones at the end of the week. Def do the head gaskets though.

Afternoon fella! I feel all naked over here without my sigs and avatars and the likes! Arggg! (runs away back to the OC)..

Anyhoo, I'm now contemplating doing some heavy research over the next couple of months, if my NA holds out, then once uni is done for the year, POSSIBLY heading home and having a bash at it myself before starting full time for the summer.

Possibly mind you.

If someone has a link to a step by step for me to "study", I'd very much appreciate it. Also, like I asked before....2 weeks of nothing else to do....enough time?

OlberJ
15-01-2008, 14:34
On the front page, should be there.

It's a doddle really in the mk2. I'll give you a hand no problems chief but am no doing it for you, where's the fun in that?

Anyways av got a mk1.6 to finish and a mk2V6 to do aswell.

2 weeks should easily see it done, especially if you can get the engine out and stripped before hand.

I think the principle for the plumbing is the same - just use the mk2 document for wiring?! :P

Over a weekend?? Did WHAT exactly??

He had already spent about 4 hours doing the wiring. He took the engine out of his car on the Saturday and the one from the Camry and then I went down on the Sunday and spent all day and night putting it in. See my Profile on the OC and the pics are there.

mark_a_thorpe
15-01-2008, 15:59
Wow....that's kinda quick!

SIFU
15-01-2008, 18:21
Mate........I couldn't believe it either. We had all the tools as it was a this mates specialist 300zx garage and we had it finished at about 1am. He still has to spray bit etc etc and it was a "straight" swap to get it in so the heads weren't done. He is doing them it was just to see how quick we could do it. He's an amazing mechanic mate and from now on all will be done properly ie heads etc before transplant.

Some of the pics on my OC account ar unbeleivable of how it was at midday.
