View Full Version : Donor Engine Checkover

I suppose this is a direct question to Mr Woods really. I have my NA MK2 booked in for a V6 swap in early March next year and I just wondered to what degree the donor engine is checked out. Obviously from previous threads I have worked out that the heads are removed and head gaskets changed and in my case heads sent away and ported/flowed.

But.... how far do you go with checking the rest of the engine..are the pistons & rods removed to check rings & big ends...what about crankshaft & bearings or oil pump/water pump etc.

My reason for asking is because in my case I will be going from an NA 2.0 with less than 65K on the clock to a 3.0 V6 with potentially (as I understand it) 150K on the clock. How reliable are these V6's at that sort of mileage? and should I be overly concerned?

The Camry engines are good for 300K. Except for the HG's.

Paul will tell you exactly what he checks but he checks a lot of it, if not all.

These engines though are great, bottom end is grenade proof.

Don't forget that lifetime guarantee he offers with all swaps as well....

My engine had 200k+ miles on it when I stripped it. There was bugger all wrong with it.

You've got to remember that by being strapped to an auto box and then stuck into a barge, you're really hard pressed to put these things under any real strain.

That's also the reason a 100K plus swap is not recommended without doing the HG's etc.

They're top engines, jus need to be primed for their new lease of life.

I'd put money on a cleaned up (lets say that's what we all do to them, Hg's etc)150K 3VZ out lasting the 65K 3SGE if you ran both of them identical from now.

have just got one home and the bottom end looks pretty grenade proof the only thing thats bad on the engines is cylinder head gaskets its probably to do with a cast iron block and aliuminum heads. otherwise new gaskets big end bearings new water pump and alternator should be good for another 130 200 miles . pity no one does composite head gaskets the only other thing ive though about is the oil pump but mister woods probably knows better than eny one the pros and cons of this engine .

I wouldn't worry mate, Paul knows exactly what he's doing with those 3VZs.
If you think your engine was low mileage, my original engine in my Mk3 had done 19k! ( Is that a record for the lowest mileage engine to come out?) and I'm quite happy with a mature 3vz-fe given the Woodsy Viagra treatment! lol
