I’m sure I’ve seen a border mr2 with this modification done to it ?

From what I can remember it was supposed to allow the gap where the fuel tank originally was to be used to duct air to the engine

Also maybe ad more weight to the front of the car?

Is this a good idea or a bad idea?

:hmm: Depends on what you use the car for I suppose.

Current position has it buried nearer the centre of gravity so the car's balance won't change much as the fuel is consumed. It's also in a fairly crash-proof location should the worst happen.

Up front would move the centre of gravity forwards which might be nice for twisties. That said for 1/4 mile having more weight over the rear should aid traction.

In conclusion :- :freak3:

Also with it higher up, it'll do the slosh a bit more.

Mite need a fuel bag to pickup in the petrol.

central fuel tank = Perfection.

Think about it: When you launch, the fuel in the tank moves backwards meaning more weight to the rear. When you brake, the fuel moves forward, increasing the weight over the front.

This link might be interesting to you Stu - http://www.d2racingsport.co.uk/Pages/othercomponents_page3.asp have a wee scroll down.

Found this while innocently browsing...haven't bought coilovers or nuffink...honest. ;)

Personally I think the current position is ideal - centre of the car and as low as possible. Only reason to not have it there is if you want to run a propshaft through the centre tunnel. That'd be a spaz idea though - 4wd mk1...too brutal for twobrutal. Surely.

That's the way the Pug T16 works, Mid engined with a prop shaft to the front for 4WD.

Hmmmmmmmm :hmm:

i dont see any benefit to it really, just a fair few drawbacks

youll raise the centre of gravity, move a load of weight outside of the axles and thus increase the polar moment of inertia, shift a load of weight forwards, put the fuel tank in the place its most likely to get damaged in a crash and burn you alive, etc, etc

standard tank is in a pretty good place. rather than spend a few hundred quid on relocating the tank, it would be better to spend that money having the standard tank modified to use an internal swirl pot pickup and either be baffled better or use foam inside, etc to reduce fuel movement and improve pickup (eliminate the chance of fuel NOT picking up is the aim really).

911s have the tank in frunk. With a full tank it weights the front nicely (balancing the rear mounted engine ) Nearly empty tank makes the car handle quite differently, not badly, just lighter at the front. Nice thing about the Mk1 is that the handling is consistant regardless of fuel load.

y when toyota spent millions of yen on the placement of the fuel tank hmm i know ill put it in the front so in acrash with another car i can get scalde buy hot radiator fluid burnt by petrol and acid by the exploding front mounted battery is it just me then id put it there if u could gt4 the thing but there is no benefit also wot about range of the tank hmmm .

I've seen this done on a highly modified Mk3 I think the balance of the car is slightly more rear biased and moving the tank to the front can have benefits. I'd be concerned about the tank being at the front during a crash. You would probably need a specialist motorsport fuel tank.
