    Bburn13 - 1.5 Swap

:believe: The time has finally come to begin my my 1.5 swap
I`m very lucky as the organ grinder in the swap is my friend Sy:nunu: (Sanguinary),
with me as his monkey .
Sy has completed his 1.5 and it will be a great resource.

The plan is to have the swap completed by the 15th November.
So I have booked a track day at anglesea for then, as an incentive.

So wish us luck and expect questions

    The Donner
    Toby a 1992 Rev 2 Turbo

Rummy has had new wheels wings, sils, rear aches and brakes. She has been striped to the core and painted with hamerite etc. So ready to go.

Toby is now at Sy`s Garden centre.
The swap began Monday, and we have whipped out the engine
and began getting it ready for Rummy

Sy will post pics, as his are better than mine

Always liked them, one of my friends had them on his cosworth.
Not easy to find in 100 pcd, 15" 35 offset.
I got these off ebay, but had to travel to Bath to collect them

When i got them. Not bad for £77 and new tyres Firestone

Right then, as Dave said I built my 1.5 with alot of help from Tom over a year ago. Then I smashed it to pieces. Then I built it myself with a stupidly small timescale. It's been on track a few times now and goes pretty well. Anyway, this isn't about me so I'll crack on and tell you where we are up to:

After jacking the car up we set to removing all the suspension. I know it doesn't need to come off but it does give you more space to crawl around under the car.
Whoever worked on the car before clearly never owned a torque wrench. Everything was far too tight meaning it took almost all the first day to remove the suspension gubbins.
It was bloody hard work and having a cold didn't help matters too... Lack of strength does not go well with taking these things apart!
    End of day 1.
    Day 2.
The first half hour was spent finishing off the removal of the sub-frame and suspension gubbins.
After that it was simply a case of disconnecting various wires, sensors and plugs in order to release the wiring loom from the engine away from the car's loom. I've discarded the bits we don't need i.e. bits not on my 1.5 and kept the bits safe we do. Most of the nuts and bolts were well behaved today although my knuckles have taken a bit of a bashing from the odd slip of the wrench.
The moment of the day had to be when I was working on top of the car, Dave underneath. I was plodding through bits regardless of anything when I undid the coolant hoses...
Once that mess was sorted we carried on. By around 4 we were ready with the hoist. Everything went smoothly, so by 16.45 the engine was on the floor away from the car.

Friday should see the engine being prepped. We should have a new cambelt and water pump winging their way to us. Apart from that I need to remove the driveshafts so we can change the ends and then clean the engine a little. Meanwhile Dave is going to strip the rest of the shell so we can turn it over to get the fuel tank out and remove the pump easily.

The car has to be ready in five weeks so for an amateur build this is going to be lightning fast...

    Pics:

    Car in place yesterday. Ouch.

    Low mileage Rev2.

Could this be the first 1.5 with traction control........ erm no is the answer. :D

    Subframe off.

    Bits accumulating.

Need lots of help with this......Wiring is not my strong point.

    Hoist in place.

    Going down?

    On the floor.

We needed more height to drag the engine out so I enlisted the help of a friend.

    High enough methinks.

And finally, engine where it should be... on it's way to a Mark 1.

Not bad for a day's work. More to follow...

    Good / Bad today
Getting off the bottom pulley was an absolute nightmare 8O ,
and that was using a Pulley removing clamp (Thanks Barry),
an Iron bar and a rubber mallet.

    Then the water pump!!!!!!!
The guy who designed the screw in bolt certainly had a sense of humor .
    Ended up drilling it out.

We then went to collect the pre-ordered water pump and timing belt :-
The guy in the shop said there are 2 different sizes 177 & 176 for a rev 2 `92,
    the smaller of the two,the 176 costing £10 more!!!!!!!!!:icon_eek:

So wiped off the belt - a 177 :shades:

So now the timing belt and the water pump done.
Also big thumbs up to Sy`s dad, Barry:thumbsup: .
One of the nuts on the exhaust manifold had shared, so expected getting out the
    :woc:
But Barry had a sheered nut extraction socket ,
that managed to whip it out easily.
Took a lot of time, but big time progress
