Thread: Boot mounted JZA80 intercooler / intake scoops?

Boot mounted JZA80 intercooler / intake scoops?

My dad got the Supra TT intercooler mounted in the boot and almost all of the necessary hoses to connect the entire system up... the removable firewall panel is also in place.. looks good!

Also, he's made a nice enclosure around the intercooler, a la monsieur Woods version:

Of course we haven't chopped the hole in the boot lid yet... On ours the spoiler needs to come off to let us place it more accurately... also the hole will be much closer to the centre support than Pauls, which is pictured above... just a necessity of the type of pipework we used.

So, I am on the lookout for a nice forward facing scoop that will fit under the spoiler and look 'tasteful'. If you need an idea of the width we need, the hole will start very, very close to the centre support, and extend to the raised line that is on either side of the boot lid (basically, start from the centre support and go to the right hand side of the car by the width of the Supra intercooler!).

Took some pics, but my memory card reader is playing up again, so I'll have to transfer them via my laptop tomorrow, but I'll post them here.

I tell you what might be perfect....have a look at your dads Gt4 bonnet scoop, look about right? im sure you can buy a fibreglass copy of those.

Or a scooby vent would definately work,or niks isuzu(?) scoop.

Halfrauds do a range of plastic scoops in various styles.....me i made me own :P

thats VERY neat mate...i love the way each 1.5 builder does the IC set up that little bit differently,no two are the same! looking very good so far!

that looks really good, any pics of what goes on underneath the car? Have you thought about running that pipe that currently crosses over the top of the ic through the firewall on the other side of the intake manifold instead? Might make for shorter piping lengths and then it would be restricting airflow through the IC.

The intercooler is sitting on the original Supra plastic shroud, which then sits in a hole in the boot floor. I'm leaning towards taking air in from the top, so I'll put on a backwards facing scoop underneath to get a bit of negative pressure to help the airflow... right now its just a hole.. above the exhaust :? ... so the reverse facing scoop underneath will help in reflecting the heat anyway.

We thought about the best way of routing the pipework... as evidenced by my artistic drawing earlier it was just going to be too much work moving things out of the way to have the pipe come out on the left hand side of the inlet manifold.

The way we have it now, the pipe going to the inlet is a little high, and without removing the covers on the back of the engine lid, it may actually hit... but taking those covers off should give a good 1.5-2" clearance.
If I do decide to go for the Eurosport kit, I'm going to try and find a nice scoop to sit on the bootlid that doesn't look out of place with the bodykit... Paul, your suggestion of an ST185 scoop is good... along the lines of what I was thining of myself!

I like the idea of scooping from underneath and a rearward facing scoop on the bootlid, I'm not sure why but I just like rearward facing scoops way better! I almost want to go for a boot mounted a/a just for the joy I get out of planning ducting and airflow, which I wont need to do with my current plan of using a w/a intercooler. I would actually really like to put a nice large intercooler in the boot, lying flat, holes cut out and a fan or two on it, then make some sort of opening in the rear of the trunk for it...but I think w/a will do me nicely for now.
Have you considered an ae92 gtz style scoop? The good thing about them is that the squareish shape suits the AW11 quite well, but I think the opening in the front of them is quite small

Yeah, thats one of the problems, the Supra IC is quite large (basically a big square) and fitting a small intake scoop isn't going to do any favours... I'll have a look around and see what is available.

    How 'bout this baby:

I need an intake that is no more than 12" wide, 8.5-9" deep and ideally tapers to 0.5-1" high over the last few inches (to push it under the rear spoiler).

i like that..but it looks a little high..the lines are great almost matching the sweep of the mk1 spoiler if you have it rear facing..
nicw work on the IC btw..looking good..
the isuzu trooper turbo sccop i used fits great as well under the spoiler with no mods..
