Thread: Operation purple thunder mk1.5 conversion

Ours was very reliable but couldn't live with the horrific fuel consumption low 20's even when driven like a granddad

The last one did around 29mpg so it isn't great but the smilesit bring to the other half and the fact I don't pay the fuel costs means I don't mind :) I do like the way it drives especially in the snow :)

Well the Impreza is still making my other half happy and hasn't broken down so this means more time to work on the mk1.

Ive got alot of welding coming up soon with having to build in done support into the rear firewall, make an enclosure for the intake manifold plus strengthen some of the mounts. In order to get some practice in I decided to make a simple battery tray, it's not pretty but it does the job.

My welding is not pretty but I have much more confidence that it will hold together, before any asks the welds you can see are just tacks the welding is underneath.

Starting to see the finish line of this build now hopefully by December I can start moving the car around the yard and getting it up to temp, but today’s work comprised of finally fitting the gt4 4 pot front brakes and finalising the intake system.

The brakes needed a little fettling once again, I’ve had to put 4mm of shims to space the caliper so the discs sit in the middle. Unfortunately my 17’s as the calipers, hit the spokes so it looks like I will need 50mm spacers so that it clears them. I want to stick with the very retro large 5 spoke, they seem to suit the car ,so now it looks I’ll be going for a wide body with rivet on arches from woodsport.

As for the air intake I want the snorkel to be functional, so that means I need an in-line filter, I’m trying out one of the canister style one, I will be making a bottom section to the snorkel with fibreglass so other than a drain hole for any rain that gets in all the air will come through the snorkel. I’m hoping that this means it will only get cold air from the outside rather that pulling hot air from inside the engine bay, what difference this will make I don’t know, but I bet the induction sound will be awesome.

So with the prospect of heading to japfest I’ve decided I need to get my self organised and get this car on the road and tested before the show season starts as I would like to enjoy the car this year as it now been of the road for two years. So over the last few weekends I’ve been hitting the workshop and getting things ticked of the list.

First was a way of shutting the engine cover so I went for the aero catch style and with a lot of fiddling and grinder action I got them fitted and they look good.

After this I started looking at how I was going to fit the wheels over the celica front brakes I started with 50mm spacers

    Front

    Rear

    The side

This was a little to wide for me plus after measuring the gap between the wheels spokes and the caliper, it turned out to be 30mm so I went and ordered some 25mm spacers and they fitted perfectly.

Now I had sorted the wheels out, I moved on to the door cards, and after a few hours I had finished what I had started two months ago. I decided to bin all the oem wiring for the electric windows and use a universal kit. This might seem silly but I was removing the standard door cards so I had no where to put the switches so replacing them seemed like a better idea.

So slowly ticking of all these jobs I have been lingering on for months and not really having any focus. Suddenly the car was taking suspend sitting on its own wheels for the first time in over a year, the problem now is there is one major job to do before japfest can anyone guess?

So like everything on this car I will be making this exhaust by myself. So I will be using mild steel not stainless as I don’t think I can weld stainless without a new welder and learning a whole bunch of new skills. The plan is to make it and see how much I like the way it looks and sounds. If It turns out I like it then over the winter I will make it out of stainless.

I want to take the idea of the corvette exhaust below and make it fit the Aw11, I will use a 3 inch down pipe and flexi, which splits into two 2.5 inch loops which meet in the middle to have some stainless 2.5 inch rolled tips. Just a little homage to the original exhaust.

If all goes to plan then by March this car will be moving and I can start thinking about getting a MOT and have a garage look over it and give me a job list of things to improve.

So this is where I am, where is everyone else with their projects?

Wow a year on and the car is still not complete, a few thins popped up and got in the way of the car being finished such as getting married, moving home, promotion and a little baby daughter coming along and turning my world upside down.

So where am I up too, the car is now back together and moving, the new seat rail was made so I can sit in the car with a helmet on, ive just started on the exhaust and I have two options an single exit or a mongoose twin exit. I’ll decide which one is easier for me to make the b pipe for as i’ll Just be tacking it together and then asking someone whose a little better at welding to insure they are air tight. Once that is done the car will be shipped off for its MOT to see what happens.

Well the journey continues the car is still on track to be MOT’d in June possibly July I can’t seem to solve the overfueling issue at the moment so that will have to wait I am wondering if there is an issue with the wiring or if changing the fuel pump has thrown the fuel pressure out and that is causing the issue.

So I have now built the exhaust and as much as I wanted to make some looping creation, time and talent has let me down so I went for a tubby mongoose exhaust and made a b pipe which does the job but once I get in on the track I might want to change that so it sounds meaner.

This car is going to be a road legal track car so I have decided to make the car as light as possible to start this process the last remaining interior has been removed and a new light weight bucket seat is being bolted to the floor, I need the car as low as possible otherwise I can not sit in the car with my helmet.

The next step in making the car as light as possible is to replace the front end for a fiberglass one, this is partly done out off a need to find a replacement wings at a decent price and a want to make the car as light as I can.

With the idea that I will be using the car on the track and the knowledge that I am not a great driver I decided that I wanted a roll cage to stiffen the car up and to give me some protection for when I run out of talent.
