quick alternator query (dash lights stay although the alt. is working)

The latest issue with my '2 appears to be from searches/discussions a dash issue (but would be awesome to have thoughts). Basically:

1. Battery and engine comp. fan light came on during a drive on the m'way.
2. Replaced the alternator (although in hindsight having not tested it with a multimeter it probably was working fine)
3. Lights stay on.
4. New alt. working fine - multimeter is showing it at or around 13.5v at idle.
5. 3 pin plug is showing 0v at all 3 pins with ign. on (and while the car is running).
6. When that plug is not connected and the car's running, the dash lights go out but the alternator doesn't charge the battery. When it's plugged in, the dash lights come on and the alternator works.
7. All fuses are fine.

Have I narrowed this down to a dash issue caused by a break in the wire from the alt. to the dash?

I thought there was supposed to be 12v on all 3 alt wires with ignition on?

So did I but for some reason there isn't. My mr has had a long history of electrical issues so I wouldn't be surprised if there's a short/break.
