the stat is now connected (i had it unplugged) and they come on when the rad warms up etc of their own accord .. thing is they only come on weak.. i measured the voltage bieng used it was 2v !! when you disconnect the stat they come on full blast like a jump jet as paul says, but when the stat is connected its a feeble blow...

ah yes but the feeble blow increases with temp to full force,it only blows as hard as it needs to.
excellent thenthats the front part of the cooling sorted. i cannot run it up to temperature properly yet as there is not enough space and i have to be careful of revving noise.. it appears to work, and a progressive voltage would explain sir as the temp needle was just under halfway at idle and after a short run up and down the path it kicks in .. jobs a good un guv

I think my fans came on a total of 2 or 3 times in the whole time I was driving the car! If it's in good condition, the mk1 cooling system is very good.

can anyone confirm the direction of airflow when the mk2 turbo rad fans are running on the radiator. i think mine are blowing through it.. i thought perhaps maybe they are meant to suck through the front rad?.. which way do yours blow al?
