Thread: This is why you need STRONG welds on your torque mounts

This is why you need STRONG welds on your torque mounts

Normally I wouldnt make a post that puts down a vendor, but Im not getting any replies from Speed Source.

I bought my engine mounts from Speed Source. The welds that they made on the rear mount had piss poor penetration. The other day I launched my car and heard *BANG* Crunch crunch crunch crunch,,,,

    Fffffuuuuuu

It appears to me the rear mount broke first, which then overstressed the front mount which broke, which then allowed the engine to twist backwards and give the axles a large angle causing one to snap apart.

SO the lesson is. Make sure your torque mounts are strong! Make good welds.

Rear mount... very poor weld penetration most visible here.

Holy fuck nuggets. You're lucky that didn't do more damage. That's pretty horrendous.

I would shred Speed Source just for not responding. They need to get those mounts back and investigate.

I'm actually quite impressed by the split ball to be honest.

I've seen gearbox bolts pull out of the alloy gearbox and the engine mount shear plus snap the axle at exactly the same place, the bearings literally fell out of a broken cage.

That's piss poor penetration on those welds.

I was about to say the same thing, there's hardly any penetration on those welds..... Ohhhh errrrrr! Though i've seen photos of mounts ripped out of the chassis rail on a 1.5 before which is the other extreme!

This ^^^ is the reason i add 5mm spreader plates to the front and rear chassis rails on 1.5 and V6 Mk1 swaps, they are well known for tearing in those areas.

ya. Im having a friend build some mounts which will be built to withstand carpocalypse. He said something about Gold plated titanium forged in kitty litter. Hehe, no just "4130-4140 alloy steel, and the genuine certified kitty litter 5000(tm) cool-down treatment to ensure strong, ductile, welds." Im curious to what he comes up with. He lives on the other side of the continent, so it sucks that I cant send my car to him to make something, but Im sure it'll be awesome.
