So I found the yellow earth from the clocks, but if I connect this to the yellow on pin 17 the lights does not come on.However if I earth this on a different earth wire they come on. Also there is a consistent 12 voltage from the yellow from the alt even if the engine is not running? Any thoughts

Sounds like the alternator is either faulty or not wired up properly.

There are a plug and 1 wire on the alternator. The one wire screws on with a 10mm and the other plug in the alt..... will have check it again

Based on my previous post, am I missing any wires on the alternator ....?

Hi,
You're description is a bit confusing. Are you saying that you have:-
A plug with 1 wire
A 10mm bolt on cable with 1 wire
Then yes. Check your wiring diagram and if at all possible get some pics.

Switch ignition on and check the following with a multimeter...
B/Y - 12v
Y- 12v
Switch ignition off.
W - 12v
Check the main charging terminal has full continuity to the battery +

1 plug with 4 wire going in and
1 cable attaching with 10mm screw to alt

4 wires on that plug? Should only be 3....
