Thread: Canadian v8 build

  1. #11
The 01b is not what I'm after, I'm not worried about cabin intrustion, I'm already prepared to cut my firewall and shorten my gas tank (especially if those trannies are 1000gbp not including shipping). I'm going to have to do more research on what north american audi's came with as far as transmissions and which of those is the strongest or has the best gearing. Hopefully by next week I will have the transmission and I can start planning the mounts, cutting and all that other good stuff.

I did some work. Mostly just getting at the engine and removing the unnecessary components. Do most of you guys run standalone? I've heard about something called vag-com, sounds like a robo muff but apparently you can access your audi ecu with it. I imagine with a lot of sensors removed (egr and stuff) the ecu will probably like to throw some codes and run in limp mode, I'm hoping this might help with some of those issues when they arise. I've been able to preserve all the wiring and factory set up of egr and sensors so I'll run it like that to start :)

It seems I can get a boxster transmission fairly cheap, apparently it bolts up to the v8 but is only a 5 speed. How are these ratios for the v8?

    1st gear 3.50

    · 2nd gear 2.118

    · 3rd gear 1.429

    · 4th gear 1.029 G86/00 (1.09 G86/01)

    · 5th gear 0.79 G86/00 (0.838 G86/01)

    · Final Drive 3.89 G86/00 (3.56 G86/01)

those ratios will feel awfully short. can you change the final drive in there to something in the 2.9 to 3.1 range?

Short like the s54 with the 3vz? the highway sucks with that v6 set up but i love the low end feel. How can i get a better understanding of gearing ratios and how they affect operating speeds? I haven't looked into changing the boxster final drive, but I will search it. Also, what is the standalone of choice for these engines? I'm seeing APR, VEMS, link g4, and ecu reflash from 034 motorsports. I'm looking for cost effective and ease of use, suggestions? Thanks for the help guys, I'm getting super pumped for this. I already have an engine/transmission cradle in the works ;)

short, just way too short. you won't even get to 60mph in 2nd

if you don't want to dig into the super complicated math, a stock transmission usually has a pretty decent spread so you only really need to calculate one gear. you should aim for 2nd gear to hit between 65 and 70mph at redline.

    just crunch it like this:

(redline * 60) / (second gear * final drive * drive tire revs per mile)

so for that motor, trans and stock mr2 revs per mile:

    (6500 * 60) / (2.118 * 3.89 * 870 )
    390000 / 7167.9474

    54.4mph in 2nd gear.

    3.1 gears would hit 68mph in 2nd.

I guess these are much better:

    1st gear 3.818

    · 2nd gear 2.20

    · 3rd gear 1.516

    · 4th gear 1.216

    · 5th gear 1.024

    · 6th gear 0.841

    · Final drive 3.444

it's a step in the right direction. not a big enough step, but that setup would be fine for the first go around and then you can see about changing the gears afterwards.
