Shifter cables

Hi Everyone. I have 86 n/a shifter cables in the car. They line up but dont seem to work too well. Can these be adapted or should I use the mk2 cables? I have heard of a few people using the mk1 cables but I am not sure how envolved that was.
Let me know what everyone is using. Pics would be great too.

I think you have to use the rev 1/2 cables and reposition the gear lever linkage from the rear to the front and shorten them a bit, there's several threads with the knowledge and how to do it on here, the search button is your friend.
