Thanks to Paul Woods I'm getting my hands on an EA61 transmission:

this is the transmission that they are using in the Evora behind the 2GR and it has pretty good ratios available.

1st 3.818
2nd 1.913
3rd 1.218
4th 0.860
5th 0.790
6th 0.673

Final drive 1-4: 3.777
Final drive 5-6: 3.238

Which leads to the following top speeds in gears
1-32
2-64
3-100
4-142
5-180
6-212

And cruising rpms:
60mph - 1842
70mph - 2149
80mph – 2456

it also has a brother the EA60 in other applications with different final drive ratios:
Final drive 1-4: 4.058
Final drive 5-6: 3.450

Makes for the following top speeds in gears with a 6500rpm limiter on stock MKII tires:

1st 30
2nd 59
3rd 93
4th 132
5th 169
6th 199

In 6th, the following cruise speeds RPMs:
60mph - 1871
70mph - 2183
80mph – 2494

as you can see, both are pretty much interchangeable. the EA61 is a bit nicer for these higher torque motors but no sweat either way.

the only issue so far is the starter position. as it stands, the EA6x starter interferes with the front bank of a V6. this is probably becuase their current applications are 4 cylinder diesel motors. I'm guessing the EA62 which they are using for the 2GR application has a slightly different bell housing.

the new cost for an EA61 from Australia is $3800 (USD) i haven't priced them in the UK yet. and they aren't available in the USA yet. the good news is, the UK junkyards sell them for a whole lot less than new cost. I just picked one up for £350 that Paul will be shipping my way.

personally i'm going to modify this bellhousing to fit the 3S-GTE/E153 starter. but once the EA62 becomes available the cheapest option will be to just buy a new case from Toyota and swapping junkyard innards into it. Toyota sells similar transmission cases for about $600 (USD) bringing the total cost (minus labour) to about £700-800.

the other good news is, unlike the EB61 that i have in the shop here, the EA6x have external clutch slave cylinders.

availability:
the 2007+ UK AURIS with the 2.0 and 2.2L diesel motor have an EA61.

the 2007 UK VERSO with the 2.0 and 2.2L diesel motor have an EA60. i'm not sure what the year range on this one is, just that the 2007 has it.

the Australian Corolla Diesel D4D with the AED150 chassis code (not 100% sure what year it started in, but it's the current model i beleive) has the EA61.

and that's my brain dump on this right now, more information when i have it
