No, no strengthening work needed. You will need the two locking mechanisms at each side. I smashed the glass off my two roof sections, you bond these onto the new roof panel and cut out the t-bar and tidy up the holes. The roof panel is quite flimsy so I bonded some strips of aluminium along the width, then covered it all underneath with a felt covered plastic sheet. I did find that the panel started to lift at speed because I hadn't pulled it down tight enough onto the locking mech's. I ended up fitting clips at the front and rear centres to hold it down.
The guys ebay name is dobin60 and based up in Leven. You will find his stuff if you look under Ferrari as he makes the roof panel for either the ferrari kits or the basic MR2. Hope this helps.
