Thread: Insurance.....mk2 NA -> mk2 V6 ?

  1. #21
Well i've sourced an engine on a pallet luckily enough and using the garage at home, still cleaning it at the moment to make space. But between me and my helper Ray :D we will have access to the few tools we don't have, it isn't gonna be done in an awful rush as i have another car for day to day use while this is being done. Also if it doesn't work, which i don't see why it won't at least i have not spent a fortune. I'm doing it because like you i have a shot 3sge and don't see the point of rebuilding it and might aswell give the v6'ing a go.

But don't get me wrong i do not really know how i'm going to tackle this and 1 month ago i would have laughed if someone suggested i do it myself...

Well I look forward to seeing how you get on in that case! Make sure you document it well! :D

And if you fancy doing a swap diary for mr2only, give me a shout ;)

out of interest, what specialist tools are you using? Infact have you got a list of all the tools you're using?

mr2only feature, noe thats putting me under pressure, the only tools we think we need that we don't have is an engine crane. We have axel stands, jacks, i have a couple tool boxes with plenty of tools so hopefully they will be enough. Getting the car high enough to drop the engine out and enough room to slide it out was my biggest worrsy but Paff let me know an east way of doing it using the engine crane. I will certainly keep a detailed guide as best i can . And fingers crossed it all works out...

    Yeah, it'll all go fine.

Mark, seriously its a lot more worrying thinking about it than it is to carry it out.

Realistically the specialist tool you will need is the engine crane, the rest isn't bad.
The mk2 boys have it easy. There is no cutting of the firewall, you need to modify a flywheel (or get Tony to do it) and bolt things together leaving a couple of pipes and some wiring to sort.

Pauls guide gives a step by step wiring guide for the mk2, the mk1 has to be a combination of 2 guides and a phone call or 2 to Paul himself :)

The help on this site is endless so if you get stuck within 24hours max you usually get a reply.

with leaving things outside, you can get the engine out of a camry in 1 day, no real special tools, but a grinder is useful. Then a day to get your engine out of the mk2. Get the box (na doesn't even need the supported bracket) flywheel and clutch bolted together, get the 1 mount you need fitted and you could even just bolt it back into the car for storage :)

If Mog struggles, there will be me telling him not to give up and I might see how time\money is looking and go drink some guiness over there to lend a hand :)

Seriously don't think you can't do it, look at it as a way to learn and at the end of it all you will be happy with your result.

Hmm you guys make it sounds so damn easy!

This talk about head work and the likes? What about that? And what about the tricks to get the extra pony power?

  9. #29
I'm not getting any headwork done as i don't plan on turboing THIS one but head gasket and water pump and maybe timing belt will have to be swapped, new ones can be got on ebay cheap enough. Hopefully a bit of paint while the engine is out to make it a bit special looking.

Thankfully all the advice from EVERYONE on here puts your mind at ease, i was told to just take it one big part at a time. Wiring does look like a pain in the ar$e but if i get that far soon i'll be happy man. After that is done then its on to try making it as good looking on the outside as yours is Mark...
