reason im asking is when i did my 1mz st182 swap i put in an st202 box instead of the original box that was coupled to the old 3sge engine. would i have been better off refurbing the original box rather than the st202 box
does it feel a lot different in first gear
-
ST202 box is same as Mk2 N/A i.e S54 gearing and FD.
ST182 is similar, if not the same gearing but the slightly longer FD.
I took the car out for an hour today (video for it an all) and it's just amazing on the backroads :)
1st gear is useable for pulling away but after that it's obsolete. Even coming out of right angle bends it's 2nd gear and plant your foot till silly o'clock.
-
olberj - so would putting the st182 fd out of my s53 box into my 202 box be ok as i have the longer 5th gear . will it drop the revs in further in 5th .
-
As far as i'm aware, yes. Everything i've seen shows the FD and gears of the S54 from the 202 being the same as the Mr2.
We measured a 182 crown wheel and it is slightly different to the S54 from the Mr2.
You will need to change over the pinion as well, which is right at the bottom of the shaft, so it's not do-able without the right specialist tools really.
It only drops the rpm in 5th at 70mph from 3,250 to 3,100 so not that big a leap.
The info for the 182 FD and longer 5th, and what they'll give you, is in this thread somewhere too.
-
right cheers olberj - so say it drops the rpm about 150rpm with the longer fd ,
now my celica 1mz swap with the longer 5th gear in an s54 202 box - is doing 2800rpm at 70mph [ calabrated tacho ] .so in theory it would drop a further 150rpm with the longer final drive plus it would feel different because you could rev it that little bit further.
-
You won't be able to rev any further, that's got nothing to do with your gearbox.
You'll have a higher speed for the same rpm in each gear though so your top speed goes up.
IIRC, 182 FD and the longer 5th should allow about 160mph top speed.
It's a percentage so you'd go down to around 2670 rpms, 5th gear at 70mph.
-
fully understand now - very interesting indeed - you must be happy with those sort of results , light weight mr2 torque and great gears to match . great find
when i said rev it more i meant speed related not actually reving the motor iv just read what i put - duh im a dumb ass

good read............ so that's 5th sorted, im interested in a closer 3rd and 4th (always one i know) and i'm lead to believe i may find these in american/austarlian/japanese boxes is this true? i have a rev2 n/a box spare and intended to use this, i'm not sure if it's a s53 or s54 or what it is but it's definatly off a rev2 n/a so if someone could confirm which 's' it is i'd appreciate it, i'm guessing i'm looking at camry's for closer 3rd and 4th gear's or maybe a diesel or mk1? but i get the feeling if the rev1/rev2 gearbox with the single synchro is the reason for shorter gears maybe thats as good as i'll get, will the mk1 gears fit a mk2 both s type boxs i believe? and what am i looking for when i look at 5th gear to know wether my box is post or pre aug 1992 any help much appreciated.
Rev1 gear ratios :
5th: 0.820
4th: 1.028
3rd: 1.322
2nd: 1.960
1st: 3.285
Final Drive Ratio: 3.944
are the above ratio's accutrate?
-
Mk1's are C series boxes IIRC.

never mind eh! 'e' type gearbox will fit onto n/a won't it? will i need the turbo flywheel and clutch, don't see why but.....
if you haven't read it i fould this 'e' type gearbox readup interesting but also abit over my head see if you lot thing it's any good
