Thread: Extending Ratios on mk2 NA box

  1. #271
Thanks Paul! Can't wait to get this sorted and save myself some gas money. Then agian, I'd probably better spend the money on reshiming my head first though.

Price isn't too bad on these gears... 83 bucks and 69 bucks US from my normal supplier.

Paul, are you sure that you have those part number right before I go ordering away? If I pull up the S53 parts catalogue, I get those part numbers. However, If I count teeth on the S53 that I'm pulling apart I get 39 and 32... which in turn corresponds with what the 0.82 that wikipedia has for the S53 5th ratio?!

Then again, If I pull up a S50/S51 parts catalogue, I get the same part numbers again.... which Wikipedia says should be a 0.73 ratio? WTF.... Same old problem from when everyone was on the search for this gearset. The toyota parts catalogue is fucked when it comes to these S series 5th gear ratios.

Sorry paul. The stupid toyota parts catalogue has me edgy. I know you're probably correct. Just thought I'd double check though so as to not accidentaly wind up with a pricey and brand new set of 0.82 5th gears lying around when I'm never going to use them should the part number happen to be wrong...

Just looked up the newer 93+ S54 tranny, which definately has a 0.82 gearset, and have these part numbers, which I now assume are the 3 piece synchro 0.82 5th gearset:

    5th gear:
    33036-20030
    33036-32040
    33336-33030

    5th Driven
    33428-20040
    33428-32050

I assume that it's just the S53 parts catalogue that is incorrect?

Paul, have you ordered those part numbers directly from toyota, and recieved the 0.73 gearset?
I'm being paranoid. Trainees don't get paid much, and these gears aren't cheap.

Hi bev, no i haven't actually ordered any, we have been using gearbox donors up to now, but we have confirmed the gears in these gearboxes are correct (0.73:1)

I think lyndon might have ordered his from toyota, not sure.

I did a hell of a lot of research into this at the time, i really don't think i got it wrong. The part numbers for the diesel transmissions do not match the s54 0.82 5th gear set, and given that we have actually fitted gears from cars on this list.....

.... then i think it's safe to proceed.

I was lucky, i got to hunt through the Rogue scrap bin to find out all the bits I needed, except the gears, and Syncro hub.

Be very careful ordering stuff from Toyota as if you just buy the gears you will find the syncro hub and selector fork won't work any more as they need to be physically bigger to accommodate the larger gear of the 0.73 ratio.

My gears were from the Avensis Diesel.

I never actually thanked Paul at the time for doing all the leg work on this as it helped me massively working out where and what to look for. So Thanks Paul

Earlier in this thread I posted 95% of all the part numbers you will need to complete this conversion (You can Thank Matt at Rogue for EPC'ing all these numbers down )

Hey you're more than welcome lyndon, it was worth it for us all in the end, plus i was oblivious to the early synchro compatability that you found so we all played our part

Lyndon, what makes you so sure that the fork and so on are different for the 0.73 gearset? The smaller teeth on the 5th gear that the synchro hub engages on have a different tooth count from the actual gear it's self, leading me to think they are universal. Are you sure they aren't universal? The teeth inside the synchro hub only enguage over the smaller teeth on the 5th gear...

If someone who has done the 5th 0.73 conversion could pop their 5th cover and do a count of the 5th gear synchro hub teeth on the 5th it's self, I could probably check. I was trying to count the teeth on the 5th gear that the hub enguages on in Pauls photo on post 19, however it's a tad too blurry to count em. Dang...

However... just been looking through the uselses IPC again... here's what I've found that would suggest they're the same...

    97 SILLY CA 3SGE S54 0.82 5th:http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_199...LMVF_3305.html
33336 5th Gear 33336-12050 (labeled GT4, SS2 in catalogue... leads me to believe not this gear) or
33336-33030 (different from the Corona diesel, as this I believe is the 0.82 3 piece synchro 5th)
    33395 5th HUB 33395-12020 or
33395-33010 (same as list part for corona diesel 5th hub)

    97 CORONA S50 0.735th:http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_G_199...EMNX_3305.html
33336 5th Gear 33336-33020 (clearly different... as It's the 0.73, as indicated by the part number Paul gave earlier)
33395 5th HUB 33395-33010 (booya! same part number as one of the ones listed for the Celica...)

If you look at all the other synchroniser parts (NON GT4 for the Celica), all the other parts match up also. It's just the 5th gear that has a different part number... So, Synchros, hub fork etc are all the same?
