Possible MC8R replica kit thread

So, not like i have enough work on at the moment, but i have been giving serious thought to developing my own short wheel base version of the Sard MC8R body. We all know it featured on a stretched SW20 chassis (around 11" i believe), which is just not feasible to duplicate, nor would you want to start cutting your Mr2 in half for cosmetic reasons!

So i'm serious about devoting some time come the new year to making a faithful replica in short wheel base form, i can get parts molded easily, it's just the initial time spent building the buck that will be a time soaker, but hey the forum is a little quiet right now so why not.

For those that don't know, this is what it looks like, i think the Mr2 world needs this to be a reality.

I have to say its cool but not the prettiest car in the world, I do think the mr2 world needs this, but it also needs a mk1 wide arch rally car kit :-)

The 222D is being done by someone I know and will be made available when the time comes.

I'm coming over on Wednesday to slap you, you clowns boot! How about getting the silly car finished, the porker done, the mk2 2gr'd up and TRD kitted. That's not to mention the Dax that's not even started. Get the bloody things finished and then do something like that.

I nearly lost my breath when I took a look at that picture! Yes, you should develop a kit and somehow make it available in Ohio....

I hate agreeing with Phillis but he maybe correct, I personally would build a space framed kit car version with Lexus v8 using mk2 mr2 parts like windscreen suspension and such then your not only tapping the mr2 scene but the kit cars as well, secondhand cheap mk2 I could see them start going up in price as people buy them.

Nooo, it's aimed at the stock sw20 market, I don't want to make it LWB.

I say fair play - You're like me and need a couple of things on the go to keep you ticking along. When you're stuck on one, move onto another and it gives the old grey matter time to naturally resolve the problem, rather than getting frustrated and pissed off with it.

Id want the font stuff...rear wings not so much..tube chassis rear end..

The plan will be to replicate the front and rear 100% or as close to, the sideskirts and rear vent will be the areas that need modifying to suit a normal chassis. I'm going to buy a scrap Mk2, build the buck around it and once molded throw the car away.

It will be next year once i've finished off a few other projects, but i've had a hankering to do this for years now.

Firmly in the 'No' camp here...LOVE the original race cars but HATE the road version.

Without the novelty of the stretched wheelbase (which is the only thing that even vaguely makes it a 'replica'), it's just an MR2 with an extremely ugly bodykit. Which hardly anyone would recognise for what it's supposed to be.

Just my opinion of course, but there's so many much nicer things you could do with an SW20 IMO.

Thing is Geoff, the stretched wheelbase is actually what i think makes it look deformed, it just doesn't look right with the rear wheels extended that far back away from the cabin, i actually think the original looks quite ridiculous in that respect. I love the styling, looks perfect to me.

It's a bit of a marmite car, but the vast majority of people in the Mr2 world love it, and i'm one of them, it needs to be done.

never know, SARD might have the moulds still, and wanna get rid of them....

I prefer the longer wider wheel base using a tubular space frame, and who cares your only cutting up a mk2 its not as if there that rare or wanted yet.

Waits for all the mk2 owners scorn.

Tiggs nobody will buy a LWB version, there is no market for that.

Wouldn't you need to have an engineers test also if you modify the chassis like that?

Yeah it popped up in a Japanese auction and then disappeared again. I wrote an email in Japanese requesting to purchase it but got no reply.

Had a good look at a bunch of pictures. The LWB actually looks good on the race cars but I agree, not on the road version.

Generally what I don't like about the road version is:

The headlamps
The ride height
The rear wing
The sideskirts
The blacked-out cockpit/roof arrangement (yes I know this is a bit of a TB trademark).

Other than that - great! :thumbsup:

For me, the skirts etc just look very fussy whereas all the stuff on the race version is purely functional. I can't really put it any better than that.

Still, aesthetics are a very personal and subjective thing, this thread seems to show that plenty like it so you may be onto something. Good luck with the project, the quality will be great whether it appeals to everyone or not.

Now that I get a better look at it, it's garish.

Generally what I don't like about the road version is;

The Car.

What i'd like to do is maybe take the best bits of the styling and then put our own stamp on it, so the sideskirts would be less fussy, obviously shorter anyway but maybe with the race version vent rather than the testarosa type vents.

So i think whatever happens it probably won't be a 100% faithful copy anyway, there is definitely a lot of room for improvement styling wise to create something that looks like it but better.

Yes, you could fix what's wrong with that design. That's a good idea. Smooth it out here, raise it up there- keep what you like and fix what you don't.

For me, I think you've already got a good starting point with the arches you make; Now exaggerate those, make some mk1'esque/running board sideskirts to tie them together and you're onto a winner.

I'd be interested in this for the V8 Mr2 Standard body 4WD project that has always been on the back burner of my mind.

It has to be done by someone Lyndon, i'm amazed nobody has tried yet, i'm hoping to be able to make a start on it in the Spring.

Mid Mount in line gearbox forward lambo style with a Rakeway billet transfer box sending drive forward (through a Free Lander Viscous coupling) and backwards to the diff aside the engine. The engine will need to be bias over and canted with a custom sump. There will be an intermediate shaft going though the sump to a flange on the other side.

Why does photobucket suck? You click on the forward arrow and it takes forever to load the next image. The first couple are fine, they go quick. But when you start "arrowing" forward fast, the page loads so slow it's horrible because the page wants you to see the adverts. PB sucks. I wish I could share my Go Daddy hosting with everyone because what photobucket does is mind numbing.

Outside of that, what I did see was cool before I got bored and closed the window.

Just slightly on / off topic, what happened to dans stretched chassis v8 build?

I am still struggling with build quality:(...its NASTY at best in places...

the front strut brace gusset's look poorly welded in...and the inner guard/wheel arch looks like an after thought....

the coolant lines at the front of the engine bay look more like a "home built scrap parts" to get it running fix.....

anything Paul does with his development can only improve on this

Totally agree with you - Looks like a homebuild, NOT an expensive sportscar.

same thing could be said about earlier Ferrari's though..

Id still own it given the chance. just needs finishing better...a tidy up, is better than building from scratch;)

I glad it's not just me. The car looks absolute dog shit under the bodywork.

having had another look at those pics...Id actually build it that way anyway. and build a "cage" for the engine and trans, and fix it to the suspension pick up points(cross member, strut towers) and cut the boot out, so if the shell took a big hit, you could potentially remove the v8/trans goodness and put it into another shell...but there are so many rough mods to it:(

if I had another mr2...I know I could v6 it....

but if I get another for regular driving the wife want an Mk3
