What tool do i need to get the 3sgte axles off the gearbox? They seem to need some sort of hex key rather that a normal bolt?

Yep, that would be an allen key fitment. Plenty of them about mate.

8mm, get a new long one  tough bolts they are get as best leverage and grip the first time round.

the supported shaft axle should just slide out of the gearbox, watch for oil loss. if you remove of the lower hub nuts where the shocker tube bolts up, and loosen the top one.. you should be abled to swing the hub up and remove the splined shafts from the hub, thats a good thing to remeber when re-installing the driveshafts /axles in the mk1 with 3sgte in.

ah just remembered, careful once you have undone the driveshaft couplings, there is a thin gasket between the coupling which can easily break if not aware. also. careful not to pull the inner cv metal casings back to far

No need to undo the hex bolts at all to remove the shafts lads. If you undo them (splitting the inner CV joint in half in effect) then you can leave the inner stubs in the gearbox. You've got a choice really, pull out the driveshafts in one, in which case you need to drain the gearbox oil and end up with the box open to the elements, or split the CV's by undiong the hex bolts. No need to drain the gearbox oil this time but you have open CV's instead. So chose whichever method you prefer!

Cheers,

Owen.

Ok tried the hex key method and i have twisted my key beyond recognition before the first bolt is off. Any idea on how to loosen them?

Stacks of WD40 I'd guess, I remember mine being a bastard, but they held ok with just the handbrake on I think...

Buy a hex key on a socket, then you can stick it on a breaker bar, the ones on sockets tend to be made of harder steel than normal keys
