ive been scooting around looking for suitable fans for both my engine bay, and boot mounted ic setup.. does anyone have any good leads on decent equipment.. or a suitable donor idea for our specific need. im looking for a large engine bay fan or twin , and a smaller single fan for the boot ic.. ?

A couple of people have been playing with IC fans on their SC's and have found no benefit from them at all. (SC has a silly little "interwarmer" in the engine bay for those unfamiliar with the setup.) In fact at higher speeds the fans can cause problems if they mask off some of the IC... Much better results from ducting an air scoop to the IC IMHO.

i hear refridgerator van chiller fans work well..;)
like owen says the fan is only effective at stand still and/or slow road speeds so dont worry about something that has massive bollox hanging off it..a well ducted duct is the key here..

agreed,the fan from a rascal refrigeration unit spins like bejesus as megatron will testify....but not that available...ive got a pair of ford focus fans mounted on my rad,theres a resistor or something on them so i chopped that out and hardwired them bad boys straight to the old fan wiring.All i can say is when they come on full chat its like a harrier taking off! very powerful indeed....now you could chop them up further to make a big single in the bay a la julian....should be plenty of those in the yards too.

I have a 1600 astra rad on the front for the chargecooler and a fiat coupe turbo rad and twin fan unit which is just about the same size as the Mk1 unit that came out. Mint condition and only ?35.

Just got a problem with running the cooling water to the charge cooler as I can't get hosing to suit. Few local mofifying garages have told me to mount the chargecooler system all at the back although not sure about if I would get the benefit then.

i will be using a boot floor scoop like johns.. and a small single fan on relay for when im stationery in traffic.. same go's for the engine bay, auto on stationery 'if' the temp is above a certain degree.. relay & temp switch.. bi-metallic typetemp switches.. about 2 quid from rs.. in steps of 10 degrees from 15-250.. n/o & n/c choice... sorted!.

handle 10amps aswell..enough for a good 12-15" fan if needed, plus a control freak over-ride switch in the front somewhere i guess ..
the standard mk1 rad.. if i can get a decent upgrade i will

Does this mean the standard radiator is not up to the job of cooling the motor or are the standard fans not up to cooling it when its sat in traffic?

On sooty' I've looked at putting a small radiator in the engine bay low down on the N/S, in front of the gearbox against the firewall with a fan on it but I'll need to see how much room there is with the lump refitted. This would help provide more cooling while keeping the standard setup at the front but I'll have to see if I can make summat fit. For the intercooler I've used a fan of Ford origin ( it was lying on top of a car so no idea which model its off ) with its shroud that just about matches the core size of the cooler. The cooler is mounted high in the centre of the boot with the fan fixed up close underneath it. Then on the circular part of the shroud I'm attaching an ally saucer with a 5 inch hole in it to which is attached a piece of flexi hose leading to a pipe welded in the bottom of the boot wall, on the other side of which is the bumper so the hole is hidden. The boot lid will have a cheese wedge shape scoop fitted to it and the underside of the lid will have seals fitted so the rain only goes through the cooler and not into the rest of the boot (hopefully!!) hopefully this arrangement will allow enough cooling through even when the fan is not on, and when the fan is on its sucks like a pornstar!!

Much more fun than doing the wiring...

standard radiators have been used for all builds so far. i think the only change bieng megatron used a brand spankers.. thats all.. standard is up for it.. by my standard is prolly about to fail.. its rustier than an mr2 :shock:

ive just used my standard mk1 rad with no problems at all and intercooler well im not even going to go there hehehe

No real need to, as you can see, I'm just a flash get :lol:

I retained the original twin fans.. The shroud was a bit tatty, but they spin nicely still.

Hey Adam, have you though about getting one of those Spal fans? I picked one up from Ebay for about 40 quid for the mk1 Escort (it's got a rad from a much later MK5 RS200 so it's nonstandard and I wanted something slim but high flowing).. they're powerful buggers and you can get them in pretty much any size from 9" up to about 14".

as it happens yes .. i have been eyeing them up.. theres only kenlowe and spal as kinda recognised performance fans about.. so notmuch to gauge them against.. how is it compared to the standard escort fan..what size before & aft..and whats it blow like? :lol:
