Definitely a dodgy engine hugging moment there. :)

He's always been into mechanical things ...........

Ok today has seen the gearbox off, the heads off & all of the bits stripped off.
The good news is the engine looks sound, very little wear on the bores & all the valves & piston heads are the right colour if you know what i mean.
Looks very much like the water pump is knackered though. Heads due to go for porting & polishing monday. No pics i'm afraid my phone battery was flat :(
Hopefully my two turbo's arrive this week from the US. Respect goes to fourvsix for supplying an engine mount & modding my flywheel. (I owe you a few beers) Gotta go i've got some painting to do !

Regards everyone

Two turbo's arrived from the US today and they're huge, i wasn't expecting the things to be so big. My flywheel's back from 4v6 suitable altered and i now have my custom mounting bracket, my heads have gone to Arnetts in doncaster to be polished etc. I'm still waiting on an intercooler, exhaust and engine stand (£42 for a 10001b engine stand from germany inc carriage etc)
Exciting but not much happening. Lot's of thinking going on though :) Cheers

But im still a bit weary about those ebay components... but two turbos from a known brand cost about 3 times the amount you payed. minimum...

Fair play. Can't wait to see this in action.

Perfect for Jeremy to work his styles on I reckon!

I guess i took the view that even if they failed prematurely it would still only cost me £100 or so to get them refurbed. They look very high quality and have warranty. Don't forget i'm merely taking advantage of a great exchange rate at the moment. So cheap isn't really cheap if you see what i mean.

Rosey are you getting the engine internals uprated or are you going low pressure??
Is the engine hugger going to fab up the exhaust and relevant pipe work aswell?

roseward
23-05-2007, 17:11
Not uprating internals as yet. Just low boost 5psi ? But may once the ecu mapping is done increase that a little. Manifold is my main issue at the moment need to find someone who can make one from scratch using cheese straws & bluetack ???

I can highly recommend AAS in Newcastle. Their work is superb. Myself and Phyllis (MRV6) have had our exhaust manifolds made there. Amazing workmanship.

Any rough idea of costs ?

I have seen phils exhaust and think its excellent. he does'nt have the traditional y pipe. his rear bank comes straight over the cros member. what was the cost of his as i know he has had the manifolds made aswell

roseward
26-05-2007, 17:46
Heads are in for porting etc with Arnetts in doncaster, cost £235 per head !

Updated (Actual figure was £478 inc Vat)

Which i don't think is bad ?

do they provide full flowbenching when they do the heads? seems very cheap! i could only find companies that were going to grind them out for that price without benching the results?

Paul Woods
27-05-2007, 10:16
oh for info i use CTM performance in dagenham, full flowbenching, heads opened right out,3 angle valve job, port matched and reshimmed for £800 the pair, their work is amazing.

roseward
27-05-2007, 20:39
Must admit i didn't want to go for the flowbenching. They are the same company that tom1nr2 used for his build.

tom1mr2
27-05-2007, 20:50
Yep same company i used and mine is up and running superb! Can't wait to see you get them turbos on mate, i am happy enough with just the v6 :)

We checked out the bottom end bearings.

Managed to snap a big end bolt :(

When we finally had the engine block stripped we notice that were one of the water hoses connected apperaed to be full of rusted coloured dust. So cleared all the water holes in the engine water jacket out with a blast or three with a high pressure blast from an air line. Never have i seen so much shit come out of an engine, it quite literally looked like someone had filled it with sand. It was absolutely everywhere. Cough ! Got to be better for it though. When i bought the camry donor the engine was a none runner, we discovered during the strip down that the thermostat wouldn't open (dropped it in boiling water) so it very much lookes like a failed thermostat caused the engine to overheat, i suppose this might explain the 2 hundred weight of sand we found inside the block. I guess this is something that anyone doing a conversion should check into, cleaning out the water ways were necessary.

BTW gasket's, tried to get them locally from a supply £80 plus vat. They could supply them they were out of stock, so on to Toyota £180. Not bloody likely. So finally onto Ebay £57.49 inc Vat & Carriage, ordered them friday afternoon they were here saturday morning, now that's cheap & good service.

There's lots of rsty water stains on that engine. have you decided on a colour scheme for the engine?

Not yet, car's rather er ! yellow so i may have the plenum and stuff done to match, but as for the block i thought a bronze colour and the sump black !

Can you mix this stuff to get the colours you want ?

good progress there! a few no brainer things to mark off the check list...

head gaskets 100% on the right way around?
did you set up the backlash gears on the cams?

sorry for being so patronising, you wouldnt believe how many times ive pulled a v6 apart to find one or both of these wrong.

Can someone point me at a relevant link for the backlash gear setup.
Cos i'm not sure.......

Paul Woods
18-06-2007, 06:49
if you arent sure then id say they arent set cos you'd definately remember locking them when you removed the cams?

basically the exhaust cam on each bank has its gear cog split in two,one side is fixed to the cam,the other side is sprung loaded against the cam so it turns.

There is an alignment hole in the sprung cam that allows a M6 bolt to pass through into the fixed side of the cam gear when the sprung side is rotated under tension to align them....if you inserted the M6 bolt before removing the cams then they are already set but you will have had to removee the bolt when refitting the cams.

Thats the best i can describe it,i should do a brief write up on the next one i do.

OlberJ
18-06-2007, 09:45
I had to re-do one.

They're quite tight, the nearer you get to the 2 holes lining up. Use long nose pliers and a spanner on the cam squared section. It only has to turn about 20* to line up with the holes but it's tight when you can't get a good grip on the rotating half of the camshaft.

Open pliers, insert in the two "non threaded" holes, then turn (anti-clockwise i think) till 2 of the holes line up and turn the bolt through the hole. It'll then lock the 2 halfs of the camshafts, at the cam gear and it will remain "sprung".

Insert one cam, remove the bolt, then trun the crank untill the other cam lines up with the outer cam (the one you've locked), insert that and remove the bolt.

They need to be 180* out when you do the second "locked" cam (or outer cam). Took me a good 15mins of head scratchin that one did.

Its detailed in the haynes manual - unfortunately I misplaced mine but I'll look for it again - if you're still not sure. IIRC olber's got it spot on.
Did my engine last september

I'm not too fussed at the moment cos the cams have to come back out.

We need to adjust some of the shim thickness to get the right clearances

So thanks guys

roseward
18-06-2007, 22:31
Setting the tappet clearances. Two questions :-

1. I'm asuming i can check the clearances even though i haven't set the backlash gears as yet and it won't matter the clearances would be the same ?
2. I just run round all the tappets with feeler guages get the current clearances and then swop around or get new ones until the clearances are correct ?

Regards

Paul Woods
19-06-2007, 06:48
1.yep totally unaffected by the backlash gears.

2.yes,measure the clearances, then take the cams out and measure each shims thickness...then do some maths and work out if some can be swapped,if you're lucky that will be the case but you might have to buy 1 or 2,they are about £6 each.

Did a bit more today. Got the shims sorted finally, they'd been holding me up.

So Cams are in Cam covers back on & the plenum fixed, though i think i'm gonna blank those two holes so i can remove the egr unit.

I know it's a bit bright lol

how did you sort the shim problem mate? were they whopping big 4mm ones after all?

roseward
29-07-2007, 10:18
No, silly really we just read the numbers off the shims assuming (wrongly) that they were shim the sizes. Of course they weren't. So i bought a digital micrometer (2.95 off ebay) measured them and ordered the correct one to adjust. Was a relief i can tell you. Can't believe i was so stupid. What the hell the numbers are supposed to represent then i've no idea. they're not a part number or anything. The new ones of course have the size on them !!!
