Yip, it's been done. Dunno how difficult it is but I believe Paul will be doing this swap on Becky's Mk3 later in the year.

I think he means the Mk2 spyder, i.e. the full convertable?

And if he does - the answer is yes to the turbo :D

superchargedsam
28-03-2007, 09:24
thought he meant the MK3 as thought the spyder came as a turbo anyway but obviously I am wrong on that point but surely it would be no big job to drop either engine in to one as identical to any other MK2 apart from the roof!

Indeed :)

BenF on IMOC has turboed his Mk3 - he's getting about 220bhp at 4psi ( with original compression ratio )

i have the option to buy a turbo'd 2zz MK3 making just shy of 350 to the wheels on 6psi... yes MK3 MR2... mk2.5 would be 2+3/2=2.5

reason i ask is, 1 smaller frontal area, and 2 lighter

I stand corrected

I had a run in a mk3 with the 1ZZ engine with a c2 tuning turbo kit bolted on - was making 270 @fly and I was completely stunned by the performance. A 2ZZ turbo would be BRUTAL indeed!

And an SCV6 would be bob on

The official mk2 spyder was only available as an auto, non-turbo apparantly.

Pretty rare - and not sure would be up to running a turbo as it is almost literally a mk2 with its roof cut off rather than a genuine "designed to be a convertable" car. Hasn't stopped some people fitting a tubby engine in though. :D Wouldn't want to reck a car as rare as a genuine mk2 spyder though...

Phew.

Thought we were going to start putting a 4AGE engine in a mk2. read it as
MK2/5

Yup - there are some known "conversions" to look like a genuine mk2 spyder. I believe the genuine article had quite substantial chassis support fitted... who knows on the copies. lol

Genuine ones came with a numbered plaque I believe, in the same manner as the TRD 2000GT's.... I think. Theres a website dedicated to the spyder somewhere.... lol

The MK2 spyder cam as a turbo, manual too, rare as shot though. I think only 2 in the country, Tom from NVI Imports owns one. I think he's on IMOC a bit.

I looked into doing a Spyder conversion using the chassis strengthening kit that Veranti sell, its not that difficult or expensive as you might think its just having the balls to do it.

Sorry for bringing up an old post but was doing a search and wondered was the 3sgte ever put in the mk3? and if so can you give an idea of the cost for the conversion?

I love the mk3 but the power is a let down and i love the mk1 but most of the shells i see need a fair bit of work, it would be pretty cool to have best of both worlds.

Also what gearbox is used?

Thanks

Not to be a know it all but this one is a factory turbo car from what I know one of only 2 in the world?

The V6 conversion on the Mk3 gives pretty much the same performance as a lot of the turbo conversions out there. Some are a bit quicker, like the C2 conversion. If you want the 3sgte lump, then Paul is the man to ask.
If you want a C2 conversion , you would probably need to go to Hungary to see Gaspar who would fit it for you. The advantage of the conversion is that, if you have a 6 speed box on your Mk3, then you can continue with it, though be prepared to replace it every now and then, as the stock gearbox was never designed to take the sort of torque a C2 can produce.

I would imagine the 3sgte conversion would use a Mk2 tubby box.

I have in stock at the moment:

1 x MK3 with Supercharged 2ZZ out of a Corolla T-Sport
2 x MK3 with 1MZ-FE V6
1 x MK3 with Turbo BEAMS red top
1 x MK3 with 2ZZ NA

Our Brit Car entry will be a 2ZZ in a MK3 NA but with cams, valves and head work.

So there are quite a lot of different options available for the MK3

Lyndon.

That's a nice assortment Lyndon. The guy with the Corrolla unit has posted on ROC a few times. He seems to have got the lump for a real bargain sum.
A turbo beams red top? Wow, that should be good. What turbo are you going to use on that? I know the setup that Thor had ,works well with the normal 1zz, as I've been out in one. Something like that?

I think it's a GT28RS76.

Very nice. Love to see pics of that one, come to that all of them, but I guess the owners have to give permission. Point them over here or towards ROC and then they can show off the creations to us.
