View Full Version : Two std ICs?

As my IC i bought probably is lost forever and you can get a std IC for a small £, is there any benefit to have twin ICs? Just have a pipe from the out, to the in, in the other?..

From turbo to IC1, pipe from IC out into IC2 in, pipe from IC2 to intake... hehehe...

If you go with 2" pipes then? Hmm.. might be s stupid idea all together. hmm, back in the think box:)

Am sure Mart or Malc will be along soon to explain it better, if not I will consult my bible tonight and give u the explanation why its not a great idea!

I think i`ll just believe in you and drop the idea. Damn Selective shipping company at Ebay lost my fu*king great and perfect IC.. damn them!!!

you after a standard one fella as probably got one at home somewhere I wont be using!

I got one also, just thought i`d have two:mrgreen:

instead of two like that, how about a 7mgte supra intercooler, just like mr2 but twice the length.. would save on pipe, can fit twin fans.

That is actually a good idea. Didn`t Megatron do that on his? I think i`ve read it on his site. Will ebay for one now, back to the devils cave.

I used a Supra 2JZGTE core (mk4, the 7MGTE is the mk3) - it's slightly larger than a MR2 intercooler and 3 times as thick! It's about 5-6" deep :eek2:

Very good intercoolers if you can get the airflow to them - they won't fit in the engine bay at all, so it's a boot chop job.

Shorty

Thought i`d boot it anyway to keep it out of the bay. Tight enough there now, and that`s without the engine in there:)

Will try to source one:)

yup the ml4 core is great, as john says. i did mean the mk3 although lol.. only to say a single mk3 would be better than 2 x turbo and a mk4 would probably be better than a mk3 :afro:

Last one is an old std IC.

theres a 2jzgte (mkiv) cooler on uk ebay shorty. search 'supra intercooler'. i had one, but blew it to pieces with a jet wash

Shorty
16-03-2007, 23:20
Found it. Think this would be a good upgrade compared to the std mr2 one?

Jet wash is fun but they certainly have a serious pressure. Never thought you could destroy an IC though:)

neither did i, until i lifted it up and all the fins fell out!. you know.. half way through the wash i thought 'Gee, this is cleaning up real well' .

these coolers dwarf the mr2 cooler

Me dad did this with the alloys on ma 205. Looked spanking, for about an hour. :slap:

pressure drops fella thats what your worries are!

IIRC - the pressure drop across a std tubby interwarmer is 2psi - so doubling that up, you'll have to generate 18psi to get 14psi to the engine. Which will give more heat ... etc.

Viscious circle. If you want a good sidemount, go for a Berk or Greddy and a SPAL fan. Can be gotten quite cheap these days!

Shorty

I don`t want a Greddy one and the Berk, i think it`s sooo expensive. Might be a good idea to just use the std one and give it some good cooling. SO many things to consider...

go for std for now mate..

You could make a crude chargecooler out of the standard IC by creating a water "jacket" around it with a pump and radiator?

I think you should :)

Shorty
17-03-2007, 13:25
Ish, lot of work doing that though. I think i`ll go standard for now then make it a project later. Got enough on my mind i think.:) Good advice and i think i`ll go for it later for sure.

Heres some info for you, it all depends how you connect your intercoolers!.... 2 IC's in series ie one piped into the other is BAD you get double the pressure drop accross them. However if you put them in parallell you actually halve the pressure drop and double the cooling as its effectivly doubling the thickness of the intercooler..... See the diagram below :)

Shorty
17-03-2007, 14:19
hmm.. that was an interesting diagram. Might just try that out. Two Y sections is all thats needed really.

[pedantic twat mode on] Better still separate them (whilst still minimising the hose length) as in Goldy's "TB CAD" the hot air from the first IC blows onto the second one... :slap:

Or just use a V6 with two throttles and one IC per bank...

Owen.

What do you mean by "hot air from the first IC blows onto the second one"? It doesn`t do that if they are like Goldys plan. Then hot air splits in two, going into separate ICs, coming out then re-join.

Sorry Shorty crap description on my part. I'm not talking about the intake air that is fed through the IC's and into the engine but the cooling air that flows over the IC that provides the cooling. Does that make sense?

Shorty
21-03-2007, 17:39
aha... got it. Well that is sort of a problem. Might get a bit tricky to cool them both..hmm (if i got it right;) )

Yup spot on Shorty. Could sort some ducting though... Or take Nik's subtle hint of keeping it standard just for now...

I don`t get it. Keep it standard? Huh?

I do want to upgrade at some point so if i do a Paul special (rear right with scope), then if i get a BIG one and put that one in centre with hole in trunk, then i`d have to close up the other one. Maby i could duct the standard in bottom trunk as it is then when i upgrade, the hole and fan is ready for it. Not sure on how to pipe it yet. Think i need the engine there to do some measurements and stuff.
