seen one of these on a MK1 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MR2-Air-Scoop-TRD-Style_W0QQitemZ300085358451QQihZ020QQc so i know they exist.

but where?

Ebay seems to be the place. Often termed a "Tom's style" scoop.

Note used on their own they're possibly detrimental to cooling as the natural air flow in a MK1 if from under the car, over the engine and then upwards out of the engine cover. So if you just cram air in the top it cancels all that out. However properly ducted to an IC on intake then all is well.

Hope that helps and happy hunting,

Owen.

Hi,

They were originally from K&D garage in the good ole USA. They were shipped across to begin with, but I believe someone over here made a mould and copied the design and started flogging so called 'inferior quality' ones over here on ebay. But I think he's recently stopped making them in the UK as he was threatened with legal action. And I think KD garages refuses to ship to UK now.

I've got little idea how it alters the airflow but I'm sure it could be properly channelled to somewhere useful and I think they look quite good on the cars.

I've got an original one (with a complementary pen from KD garages). I could be convinced to part with it, it cleans up nice and I have meshed the intake. PM me if interested.

i could be interested.

if they cause a hinderance rather than a help, why do people have them?

is it the turbo boys who benefit?

it was just a thought while thinking about the V6 convertion.

seeing as you seem to be doing the V6 convertion yourself, do you feel its not necessary?

Fimmo made moulds and sold a few over here.

The quality of Fimmo's ones were superb - really really thick fibreglass. Proper indestructable stuff! Apparently the bloke who made the moulds put his finger through one of the original USA made ones the FG was that thin!

Anyway, Fimmo didn't ever mention legal action - I think he just decided to concentrate on the tinting business and went away from the hassle of supplying Fibreglass components.

Hell, i'm sure he'll be along soon to comment!

I'm not doing a mk1 V6 for some time, I'm getting a mk2 V6 LPG first. And I'm planning on researching a RS200 style lid maybe, for better drag qualities.

I've know a little about the airflow of the mk1 bay. From what I understand the flow is bottom to top, meaning air comes from under the car and out through the engine lid.

The scoop unmoddified just dumps air into left hand side and would therefore would see have little benefit on a standard mk1.

However seen as your V6 intake is going to be on the left hand side of the warm engine bay, what I was going to do was channel that cool fresh air onto the airfilter thus providing steady flow of cool air to filter.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but that would be beneficial.

Luke

Sorry didn't realise it was anyone on here, no offense intended. It was just the impression made by certain IMOC members, I should of known better  .

But the USA one I have has stood the test of time with me, still in one piece 3 cars later.

I think there was another seller who made some and ebayed them over here. I think Fimmo only ever ebayed a couple.

Can't vouch for the quality of the other seller, but Fimmo's really were top notch. Was gutted taht I couldnt' afford one at the time.

If I fitted one I'd create a sealed box underneath and house the air filter in there - means that all the air that was 'scooped' down would be fed straight into the air intake, and wouldn't disrupt the upward flow of the air through the engine bay.

The scoop unmoddified just dumps air into left hand side and ...

.....would also dump rainwater all over the fuse box:hand:

Mine is ducted to deliver cool air to the underside of the intercooler
