View Full Version : Extra Gauges
What are you thoughts about gauges, which would be better?
I want 3 in the din slot.
oil pressure (definately having this one)
Oil temp
Battery voltage
air/fuel gauge (needs a lambda sensor installing in the exhaust)

A/F is a must if you can go for that as quite useful to know !
I'd go for
Oil Temp
Water Temp
Air Fuel
jonny water temp is already on the dash
As my V6 won't be turbo'd or SC'd do i really need a A/F.
I was thinking
oil temp
oil pressure
volt
Forgot to add, i want some digital led ones, the colours are
RED
AMBER
GREEN or blue
I'm thinking red or possibly amber ones

Wouldn't bother with A/F. IF the engine is relatively stock, the ECU will be controlling this. If it goes wonky the ECU will do its thing and you'll know about it way before you look at the gauge.
Oil pressure and temp are definates. Then probaly voltage if you already have water temp.

Is the dash one really worth a wank though?

A/F is always a good idea to have it - should never rely on dashboard ones - same goes for oil pressures & temps.
Voltage is not so important, unless you want to monitor alternater charging status etc, and dashboard water temps are usually fine - they have a direct read, so you won't be getting delay on them.

What gauge is worth a wank? They can only measure at a single set point.
Considering the water temp is normally taken from the outlet of the engine, I would say it gives a good idea of how the engine is running temp wise. But then by the time its taken a rise (thats not air pocket related) its probaly too late.
If you had 2 water temp gauges, one pre engine, and the other post engine, then you could have a comparative reading to establish whats going on in between.
As for voltage, is that really worth anything? surely lights dimming, and the car being down on power would be the first signal.
Maybe best left at just a double gauge holder in this case?
I do remember seeing the JUN Yellow 1000bhp Skyline having 3 water temp gauges. One in for the front, one for the middle and one for the back of the engine. Overkill? With 1000bhp I think not :)
Have one that measures intake manifold pressure. Just incase it's about to blow your welds.
I think i'll go with 3 oil temp / pressure and the voltage one as i'll have the spare slot in the din and its a doddle to wire in.
what colour red or amber, want it to look like it is standard kit.

What colour dials do you have.
Personally I feel that all measuring devices hold a value. I don't think you can be too careful.... plus it can look trick :D
lol /\/\/\
I've got the standard mk2 ones.
i like the idea of red but i think the amber would look more discreet.

I'm swapping most of mine out for a red LED set up. Not LED gauges, just light source on splitfire gauges for the time being.

Which ones are you going for, which gauges have you at present, what do they measure?

currently I have oil press, oil temp, and boost pressure (being a turbo)
In the future I will be getting new ones of the above, plus, fuel pressure, water temp, and exh. temp. I'll either run 5 or 6 gauges. All will be functional as I'm not wanting to leave anything unmonitored after the amount I've spent on the engine.
Here are the gauges

groovy!
Personally I would go with Red or Green. I don't think you'll get any of those to look very stock.
