Ive found that the tramlining on 17's is not to my liking, will i still get that on 15's with 205 tyres? Plus the fact that the sidewall profile is so inflexible the back end is all over the place!

Obviously wheel taste is down to the individual but what would you guys reccomend? 15's or 16's and what width, make etc?
I'd like to keep them as light as possible!

My 480 has oz superleggeras on it, in 16x7 inch. These would fit my mk1 perfectly and i like the look of them, they also seem pretty light.
Should i put stock wheels back on the volvo and put the oz rims on the 1.5??
Does anyone want to buy some 17's?
Ramble ramble ramble.........

I reckon 16's is the biggest to go and retain the handling. Different tyres might make all the difference tho with your current wheels. There's a few people on here that have 17's IIRC.

When i do get round to changing mine i'm definitely going for 16" wheels.

No,no,no! Your not supposed to say that rotflmao
They look great, i'll agree, but i'm not happy with the way the car feels and thats more important to me :)

I'm running toyo proxes ti-s tyres btw!
Another thing is that 15's might not fit over the st202 brakes, i'm pretty sure 16's will but need to try them on to be sure!

Ollie, buy my 17's and i'll deliver them for free ;)

get a good 3d alignment, see if that cures it :)

I had the same problem with 17's. They do fill the arches nicely though.
Back on 16's and she's handling sweet. no tramlining.

It's amazing how much handling problems are caused by erratic offset changes and poor 3-D alignment set up.

I had 235/40/17 on the front of my mk2 and 255/40/17 on the back and the car felt ALL over over the place. Got it aligned and it was a totally different car. I mean, totally different.

Seriously check it out, even if it just gets done to prevent uneven tyre wear. Mine's getting done as soon as Paddy Woods gives it back!

lol

Superleggeras look quite similar to what i got on mine, personally i don't like them too much, 16" Chronos in white is what i want :

I do like the contrasting black you got going on tho.

not what you wanna hear but they do look sweet. Even deepen ones with 16 or 15 would be even cooler:)

Anyone considered something like this:

These are original porsche fuchs. i think they look great.

it was mentioned when i was buying tyres by a track day person  whom had used the t1-s , they apparently flex quite bad, and recommend after shredding a set of t1-s in one session to buy the newer t1-r style (reinforced side walls) for a much improved ride.

hows the suspension set up behind the wheels on that motor?

Murf the oz superleggaras are a very light wheel indeed which will aid acceleartion and handling due to reduction in unsprung wieght, just make sure you stay away from kerbs with them ! the sueprleggares have now been supercedded by the ultraleggaras, am defo going super or ultra leggaras on the TC but have dymag 5 spoke 17s for the 1.5 and will get the whole car 4 wheel lazer aligned as johnny has suggested, also the entire suspension is being replaced with new shocks springs top mounts and bushes all round so defo gonna need her set up[ after that !

Oz all the way for me fella as top wheel in every respect !

Fuckin' ell, thats wide!! I had stock width tyres on my mk2 turbo and they were more than adequate!

Cheers for all the comments guys, i'm going to get the suspension set up and aligned and see how that feels on 17's.
As Sam said, the OZ wheels are pretty light and i think will look good as well and that appeals to me so i might give them a bash too, its nice to be able to pick and choose!
The car has lowering springs and koni dampers, i'm planning on fitting poly bushes too so i'll get it aligned after that! For all the comments about those wheels suiting the car, the previous owner can be complimented for choosing them, cheers Rob :)

Johnny, my mate Neil has a genuine TRD (No 21) so i can get you wheel sizes and offsets from that, if thats accurate enough info for you ;)

Murf
25-12-2006, 00:46
Oh, and sorry for the bad spelling and stuff, i'm just back from the pub!

Real TRD wheesl arent all that wide from what i recall as the track width of the car is a lot wider than a standard mk2, as Mk2's go its a lovely car but he still keeps trying to get his mitts on my 1.5 ;)

Murf - when the winter's over and my mk1's back on the road you're more than welcome to take mine for a drive - is wearing 195/50/15's.

Or....you could just borrow the rims for a day....maybe! :shifty:

If anything happened to them I'd have to kill you though :box2:

got toyo T1-R's on the front 2 and something else that was mid-range and has rather impressed me on the back....can't remember what they are though!

T1R's are good. I only use Eagle F1 GSD3 on mine now though. Superb wet weather tyre and a very progressive dry tyre too.

I got a set of thoser in garage Johnny for when these ones die. Not meant to be much use on track tho according to peeps on IMOC, wear rather quickly.

Have you used yours on track Johnny?

biteme
26-12-2006, 20:11
I've done 4 trackdays on my current set of tyres. I do get them aligned before each trackday.

Having seen the way some of them drive on IMOC, it's no suprise that they wear tyres out. OVERSTEER IS NOT THE QUICKEST WAY! lol

I get about 18 months out of a set of rears, but I do only do 1500 miles a year in mine really lol

That's kewl, good to get a few opinions, was thinking about selling them but i'll defo hang on to them and give them a bash.

*EDIT* Scrap that, i can use the money better, will be up for sale in right place, sorry for the thread hi-jack.

Now let me get this straight.

You have a set of 16s on a volvo which will fit straight on the 2 and a set of 17s on the 2.

Why not try taking the 16s off the volvo and replacing with the 17s off the 2 and vice versa. at least then you can see if they are any different and it has not cost you a penny.

i will be sticking to my 195/50/15s on my 1.5 at first and use yokohama tyres.
on other cars that use 15s as standard people say that 16s are a good compromise on performance v looks.

Murf
27-12-2006, 21:47
good plan but i dont think the 17's will fit the volvo so my missus will have to walk to work in winter, not a good plan!

I'll swap them anyway and get a feel for the different sizes before the nice dry summer t-bar weather :)

This is what i'm after, 1st one down in the link : White Chronos (http://olberj.squarespace.com/photoshops/)

16's i think suit it perfect.

Murf

Well, its taken a while but my 16's are on!!

Car feels much better, has restored the snappy handling that a mk1 should have. Feels much more chuckable and lively and fun to drive, the OZ wheels weigh so much less than the wolfrace wheels, its unreal!!

Very nice indeed Murf. I'm sure those would be much lighter than the Octanes, even in 17's.

That looks, and sounds like it goes, so much better squire.

Good choice

Murf
27-08-2007, 22:05
Apparently superleggera is italian for superlight so i'd be disappointed if they werent substantially lighter :)

I've put toyo proxes t1-r's on the front and they are brilliant!
On the back however i left on the tyres i had on before (on the rear of my FWD 480) they are ok in the dry but fucking deadly in the wet! Initially it was a great laugh chucking the back end about but after i felt the back start to slide coming off a dual carriageway roundabout doing about 40 i've decided to get toyos for the back as well, shat it big style!!

Nankang ultra sport NS2 for those wanting to know which type to avoid, ditch finders and no mistake!!

Compared to the Toyo's i had on before they are shocking!

Looks so much better now Murf - all low slung and whatnot. It really does look....perfect!

Still gotta have a ride in your car to see how stiff the suspension is - need to address my old saggy shocks and springs soon - got a job now too so will have pennies to waste on the car once I've earned a few and paid off my debts!

Murf
29-08-2007, 09:25
A job? Surely not!!
I thought you'd be a student forever ;)

Suspension feels perfect now, once ive done the poly bushes i'll play around with the damper settings a bit. Its not too stiff, just feels nice and tight, thats on the softest setting. Feels a bit overdamped on the stiffest setting, feels a bit bumpy to me.
Maybe i'm getting old!
