Been talking with me old boy about all the V6 conversions that are going on and he's come up with a rather interesting idea.

Unbeknown to me he's already measured it up and it's not a million miles out. He's always wanted one and this is probably the closest he's gonna get.

Sooo, our project is gonna be : Looky Here (http://www.olberj.squarespace.com/mrdino/)

It's gonna be a wad and a half of work but i reckon we should be able to do it.

Any comments/ideas/definite no no's you can see?

olie are you on about dropping a dino replica shell onto a mk1 monocoque?

jesus thats a lot of work! in fact biggest obstacle is going to be the mk1 suspension turrets,i suspect they may already sit too high to use with the dino shell, that would need addressing.

Also you would have to bin all but the floorpan and bulkheads of the mk1....so the strength is going to be totally lost, the key here would be putting that strength back in with a roll cage of sorts without adding too much weight.

Got to say mate, massive project....in fact the more i think about it the more i think its a no goer but harder cars have been envisaged and built.

If you have the time and money anything is possible.....id start by measuring the wheelbase of both and track etc

Getting hold of a good replica body will be hard . The Karma kit car is only like a dino in shape and the Deon kit car went tits up years ago . Last time i heard of a dino replica it was Classic Sports Cars in Hatch Beauchamp they made one with a Alfa v6 in it . Think you would be better off picking something else but then again if you want to then who am i

MMMMMMM DINO

But if I was doing a replica it would have to be one of these:

The way he was looking at it was to make the panels as a one off. Made from scratch. Idea was that it wouldn't be a kit as such so would avoid the SVA.

Still at the thinking and research stage so your input is what i'm here for.

Old boy's confident it's do-able tho.

If i can get him to buy a Camry and a busted Mk1 then if it doesn't end up as a Dino i'll nick it for myself and make it into sumthing else. :D

Wheelbase:

Dino - 92.1" (2340mm)
Mr2 - 91.3" (2320mm)

Track:

Dino - 56.1" (1425mm) - Front
56.301 (1430mm) - Rear
Mr2 - 56.7" (1440mm)

As you can see, fairly close.

What about these suspension struts Paul? From the pics they look higher on the Dino. No reason they can't be cut down and rewelded if they are higher on the 2 tho.

indeed olie,no reason at all the strut towers cant be chopped down to suit, just more work thats all, massive project this one but anythings possible.

I like the Diablo SV and the Muira but not sure on the dimensions. Infact, going by carconceptz site they're a fair bit out.

Anyone got some technical Drawings of the Mk1?

I think the GTS is gonna be the one to go for. Be easier to mould the upper rear than create windows and would allow the use of a rollcage.

Only major thing i can see that'd make it look very different is the curved windscreen. Any way round this?

OlberJ
11-11-2006, 18:32
I see what you mean with the turrets Paul, would defo have to come down a fair bit.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/11/84.jpg

Now wondering whether to buy a kit and make it fit or start from scratch?

Paul Woods
11-11-2006, 18:39
i think thats the sensible option, although asking a bunch of grinder wielding loons about sensible options isnt a good idea!!!

if it were me id be tube building a chassis from scratch, use the mk1 donor for electricals, steering components etc.....what you need is a double wishbone suspension set up,very compact and doesnt impede up into the body at all.

OlberJ
11-11-2006, 18:46
See i was hoping for a mk1 base, Toyota engine and the Dino plopped ontop.

The old boy's looking at Alfa V6's aswell so that'd mean megasquirtin it. It's probably gonna have feck all mr2 in it. We'll see where we get with it tho.

If we can develop a kind of MrDino kit i'd be chuffed, then he can have his Alfa/Ferrari/Kit bastard child. lol

I think trying to base it on an MR2 is not the right way to go about it. You really need to pick a donor car to suit, rather than trying to make the replica suit the donor.

Paul's on the money; you really need a tubular, ladder or box section chassis or spaceframe, with double wishbones. The you can mount whatever engine you fancy in your custom frame.

Trying to make it around the mk1 is just asking for trouble - there will be so much fabrication needed to change the shape of the body and add/remove structural elements of the car, that you'd be better off putting that time and effort into building a custom spaceframe from the word go, to accomodate everything you need to build a good replica.

Could also base on a Mk2 - dimensions also very similar which is surprising.

But if I was doing a replica it would have to be one of these:

That would be my 2nd choice, after a Lancia Stratos:shades:

Aye, but you'd always know it's a mk2 underneath. :hidesbehi

Yeah, good point ;)

Just figured that the longer tail and lower(?) front lines might suit better.

OlberJ
13-11-2006, 10:26
Your quite right mate, it's a close call. I'll need to have a look into that aswell. About 2 inches longer and about an inch wider in track.

mk2

Wheelbase 94.501 in | 2400.3 mm.
Front Track 57.901 in | 1470.7 mm.
Rear Track 57.101 in | 1450.4 mm.

dino

Wheelbase 2340.001 mm | 92.1 in.
Front Track 1425.001 mm | 56.1 in.
Rear Track 56.301 in | 1430 mm.

I'll have a play about in photoshop later and see how it lines up.

John

Of course you'd have to do a V6 swap to match the real thing :)

Have you seen this? It's a kit for the MK1 from Japan. It's made by a company called M'Technic.

ooft, that's not the nicest but they've abviously got the same idea.

I've been looking on classicreplicas.co.uk and they've got a 100% identical Dino shell that they produce. Trying to find out the cost tho.

No reason i shouldn't be able to adapt that shell onto the (looking like mk2) floorplan.

They ain't got a builder's guide so no technical drawings unfortunately.

No one seems to have them. :?

They're new website http://www.classicreplicasuk.com/

They've been quite helpfull with my questions too, jus waiting for sum dimensions back.

Wheelbase is 2280mm so pretty close to the mk1. Mk2 is 2400mm apparantly.
