View Full Version : rear body work

will be doing the rear valence & body soon, ive decided to plate up the valence gap with either perforated or plain sheet steel, and use a rover 216 front bumper over it, saw this recently on pauls old 1.5 and decided its real nice got to be worth its weight in gold.

the replacement allows me to not worry so much about the look of the metal work underneath. it would be very difficult to refabricate this portion close to origonal shape of valence.. so the bumper is a god send!. costed 15 quid from the local breakers.
shot of origonal on pauls old 1.5:

one on my banger, fits V well. have to chop off the top portion of bumper so it sits under the MK1 bumper just so. im not sure how a turbo backbox will fit yet, progress soon hopefully.

and another day at the garage.. :alc: .. al and I were drinking coke and eating cornish pasties, having a chat, torching rev 1 looms :poke2: lol , and we got some welding done :) ..

this week i have been trimming up a section of 16 gauge sheet. thats around 1.5-1.6mm. good stuff for the valence. i cut a cardboard template, then cut steel from template, (?10 from friendly sheetmetal place)... and then was basically back and forward to and from workshop slotting / bending / drilling, till happy with fit of sheet for now. it fits good in profile of the rear which is wavy.. and we (alan  ).. tacked the sheet up onto the rear as planned, we used U-POL weld thru zinc primer for the first time, i think i got the idea of peebs, and let me tell you its firkin wonderful stuff to use , does not affect the welds. I also reinforced the bottom of the sheet with a 20 x 5 mild steel flat bar length, i wanted to do this inside so the thin sheet metal wouldnt take a battering from the road salt as the wheels flick their shyte onto the valence.. so i stitch welded this bar on all the way along to reinforce/protect.

I went for holes as i thought johns looked nicely origonal and also will flow more air than the standard slots which'l help me keep boot mounted IC cooler. i love all this theoretical bullshit :-) but we can only try. its fixed in as solid as a rock and thick where it counts oo err missus.

cosmetic left, happy so far, might even leave the rover bumper off eventually, yet to see what it looks like further on. once again sooperb thanks to al who comes down to help out .

and btw.. alan tryed to torch a turbo! :D .. j/k .
while welding unfortunately the loom caught ablaze and melted a few ecu plugs and most of the ecu side of wiring. the N1 and engine side is untouched, needs a new loom tho folks. was my fault tho, went off for a whizz as was needy!.. and inadvertently the extremely combustable boot lining caught ablaze while my attention was elsewhere . oh.. and i went for a whizz in al's 1.5!.. its one thing bieng taken for a ride as a passenger.. totally different driving it, id really like of those 3vzfe swaps aswell.. they are frikin awesome without exception :)

thankyou shorty, i hope you managed to squeeze a norweigan blonde in the packet..

ive bolted the eurosport up, it fits well under bolts. i used alluminium angle strips 2 x 250mm long, and drilled 5 holes in.. dril & tapped up through the bumper bar M6, bolted on up through the spolier top lips L/R. i can use the existing mk1 lower tie rods to tie it in at the bottom edges. I will bolt through the side lugs 2 places in each side tommorow to the side lugs on the bumper skin.

it fits ok, folk scorn the eurosport kit.. this bit fits fine and dandy.. maybe a few cracked edges to fix .. but overall a keen fit.

next job is to fit the arches on rougly, fettle and cut / find a way to bolt them to the eurosport sides.. fit them just nut/bolts. then i have to make an inner thin strip on each arch / tack weld.. so the flare inner lips will meet up with the origonal arch liners. then all out and por15 the arches. i'll be continuing in the bodywork section!.

bit more progression on the engine lid side of things, ive cut and stuck it in.. am now welding up the support braces. it definately needs them as when it has a big hole cut in it the lid is very flexible!. still need to put something under the green mark and lash over the latching mech with some sheet. which will be the last fixing point for rigidity. used 15 x15 x 3 angle acrross top and the 4 slats, and some 20x5 flat bar for the bottom bit. more lashing up to follow

how much clearance do you have? and will you have them suck air out or blow into the bay?

adamh
25-04-2007, 21:27
ah clearence.. the steel work is flush with the 'lowest' parts (drip trays) of the lid as you can see ..so no worries. it should fit (famous words lol ) .. when i get round to fitting i'll let you know.

fans.. according to JB.. there is a healthy through flow of air when moving, so i've decided i'm not going to use lid fans unless an overheat proves me wrong. my IC is in the boot, and i got the engine bay fan on the side vent.. im going to get this job done and carry on mate.. i can always add a fan to one of the vents there later

as it happens alans running an adjustable fan thermostat on his side vent fan this is a real neat trick as it can come on earlier in traffic for summer with a twiddle of the knob, it also stays on and cools the engine bay after shutdown and turns off automatically when happy. that's if you don't wire it on permanent with ignition like I have right now.

i'l eventually be running the intercooler fans and side vent on 20 degree stats with overide switch, as I don't want to starve the ignition of cranking amps, I've flatted it a few times with stop / starting in the garage and not going for long runs and have to take the fuses out right now while working on it. I got three 8" fans at the rear to run two on the IC / one side and the beefier turbo rad fans upfront on the standard stat set up

28-04-2007, 22:54
i got sme more time on the lid today, ive now cut the main brace bar and inserted a 5mm peice in the cut gap ! look closely you will notice in the middle. i didnt notice but the lid was curved by about 15mm at worst after the welding before, sorted now. i also put in a some plate from the brace bar to the catch to stiffen that up. drilled through the angle and self tapped into the existing mk2 lid holes (handy) this attaches the turbo lid peice to the mk1 frame, i then plated over the remaining mk1 vents, and toshed some fibral all around the edge.. its alot stiffer now. last job to do on the rear is take the lid to a tin basher who will knock up a 2mm ally cover plate for the underneath so it hides all the nasty bits ;) and leaves ony the lid catch holes and vents and folds over the rear lip. . cosmetic left of course, isnt there always.

2nd time round is straighter, sometimes you forget just how flimsy the mk1 lid is without the middle bit. i thankfully didnt have to chnage the daily driver gearbox either just the driveshaft & cv as that was what was making the bag of bones noise! so good day. im off work this week... time to take the plunge with the rear arches and get this thing wrapped up.. scary job!

some more progress on the penultimate work on my motor  .. i'm off slavery this week to get this bit done..ive been at it two days and so far have managed to get the right side on  and the rest of the r/h arch constructed.. i mean it was complete but i had to fabricate in the front and rear bottoms as the arch (woodsport arch) was origonally built for wide ass lily who must have the most humungous wheels cos when i put these arches up i was like..'theres no frikin way these will fit 8O ' pauls rears had a rolling rad of 650mm or there abouts.. my paultry 580 means 70mm difference on diameter and some room to make up. so i rotated the front of the arch round and down.. and 3 inches of arch was poking below the sill. that was lopped off , and lots of lashing bits here and there, and shes on  ..
alan popped down today and started the fibral/filler cosmetic off

now the left is a different story, i have the rear corner quarter to fix on, and the front arch lower panel to fix on, plenty more burnt face/weld in ears/ slashed fingers/black snots to come ;)

here go jeff, a square on shot of the rear, i think they look best as is.
so then, i have no more welding to do on the car, im on the cosmetic now which is pure rubbing and priming and getting the shape right, will take a few weeks i reckon!, also have the engine lid to do, but thats the last bits.. oh and the quarter window needs putting in. cant beieve its nearly done.. jeff.. whats going on your end matey?.

all sealed up now so you cant see any imperfections inside of the arches/should be watertight seam sealered on the insides. just got to black por15 them and underseal over when the por gets here. the pink blobs are fibral where seam sealer was not bulk enough to bridge the gap. there are steel inners under the goo.
