View Full Version : Shugsta's 1.5 swap

Paul Woods
21-09-2006, 18:50
Anyone got a spare woods they can loan me for a few months? up to my arse in conversion work here, and our very own shugsta's is the next on the 1.5 production line.

So yesterday he dropped off his car and then shot off to do a 7hr round trip to derby and back to pick up this....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/09/201.jpg

I know what you're thinking....that clip is burnt out! but its not as bad as it looks....the fire was mainly in the boot and only slight burnage occurred in the engine bay, well i say slight, its taken out the Map sensor, alt, full engine harness, injectors, cam belt cover and oil filler cap but apart from those it seems fine.... heres the worst of the engine bay...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/09/202.jpg

So im fitting a new harness and replacing all burnt bits......sadly the Ecu in the boot did not survive......kentucky fried ecu anyone?
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/09/203.jpg

So i set about getting the engine out of the charred clip....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/09/204.jpg

And shortly after the subframe and exhaust were separated from the engine...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/09/205.jpg

So she turns over fine, other than plastics and things you'd expect to burn all seems well......ive got my work cut out with this one! but like a pheonix she will rise from the ashes.

PMSL quality... how the hell do you set a boot on fire? Did he fit a dodgy flamer kit or something!! Nothing like the smell of burnt plastic eh!

Charred Mk2? Methinks we've found the TB BBQ!

Paul Woods
22-09-2006, 06:34
indeed jiff! good idea!

ash ive just turned the engine over by hand, thats all i can do at this stage,it should be ok though it hasnt had a real roasting! the timing belt wasnt even charred so its just superficial.

I think its taken the engine harness out due to the electrical fire in the boot, thats set the whole engine harness alight.

this ones gonna be a scorcher!.. hUghs swap eh.. I wondered what was going on with that, good luck mr woods

Shugsta
22-09-2006, 15:30
Does look a bit charred to say the least. In my haste to get home after dropping the clip off at Paul's about 8pm (been towing a trailor for about 12 hours at that poit) I drove home with the replacement harness, ecu and fuel rail etc (all un-burned). They'll be winging their way down to Paul on Monday. The remaining parts needed have been listed and emailed to the guy I got the clip from. He agreed before I took the clip that he'd replace any fire damaged parts so no real drama there. Good thing is it has an LSD and he threw in the 2 turbo rad fans all for the sum of ?500.

It was good to see the hive of swap activity that is Woodsport, lots of nice work going on there and of course I'm 200% confident that Paul will get this purring again and in he back of a MK1 where it should be.

Paul Woods
22-09-2006, 18:18
200% confident.... im 5% sure you are right mate! lol

Shugsta

Other bits and bobs arriving now :);

These have just arrived at WoodSport:

New harness and associated gubbins
XS Power Downpipe
ST185 CV's

Paul gave me a list of parts that were fooked or suspect.

Timing belt cover
Cam belt cover
Map sensor
Injector resistor pack rev2
Coil pack & amplifier
Fuel Pump
Alternator (if test fails).
The fella I bought the clip from, ncrecovery1 on eBay, agreed from the begining to supply any damaged parts and true to his word, he's got the list together and is sending all of the above to Paul in the next couple of days . Well, nearly all... he's still to get his hands on the covers but they aren't needed for some time anyway.

Now I need to get some more stuff,

Wheels - I've ended up dreaming about these things after spending too long online looking for, dare I say it, the "perfect" set of wheels. It's not happening on my budget (?500 with tyres). Any suggestions for wheels to go with a black mk1.5 fitted with a SamAuto bodykit? They'll need to fit over the ST205 breaks up front. I realy like the deep dish wheels, Borbet A & Borbet T sort of thing. I'm thinking about 205's up front and 225's at the back.
Fuel Cut defencer (or is it defender?) - Do I need one of these? If so, there's one on the car just now from it's SC install. I seem to remember it's for a 3sgte.
Boost Controller - What's a good option here? There must be stuff I've missed :hmm:....

adamh

sounds like your getting stuck in shugs :)

looks like it well covered (no not the side of the car) but parts wise, perhaps a boost gauge ?
manual boost control (mbc/grainger valve) is fairly cheap but not really remote control unless you want a brass tap in the cockpit!.. elecy widgets are far more pricey but in my ideals worth it for ease of use and night time eye candy

Shugsta
12-10-2006, 00:49
Hmmm...sure I missed the side of the car (with most of it anyway ) rotflmao

Paul has got me covered for a boost gauge. He's going to fit a pod on the inside left of the dash.

It'll take time but like most good malt whisky..you no the rest. All I can do (wish it was more) is keep Paul supplied wth the bits as he needs them.

Cheers
Hugh

Hey! I've just bought the exact same seats in red and black for the Escort! How much did you get the pair for? I managed to sneak in a late bid of under ?95 for the pair :D

Nice one John, I chose black and grey but just went for the Buy It Now for ?99 + Delivery. Still a bagain at that:)

Garbe, they're going straight to Pauls so Iwon't see them straight away. As soon as I find out from Paul I'll let you know. Hmm, come to think of it John, you'll probably know what they're like before I do.

MegatronUK
21-10-2006, 09:42
They're a bit over exposed on my camera so the red looks more pink-ish than red.. but you can get a good idea of the kind of quality and finish...

They're pretty good actually - the back is a bit stiff, but they have good side support, slide rails, sided reclining mechanisms (so there's a left-hand seat and a right-hand seat). Basically a bargain for under ?100.

Shugsta
21-10-2006, 13:41
It all sounds like good news John:boogie: I can't see your pics though mate, properties are showing your internal IP on the image URL. :hmm:

Mine arrived at Pauls yesterday. He's going to fit the drivers seat fully adjustable and the passenger seat in a fixed position. What option are you going for with the escorts seats?

Peebs
22-10-2006, 12:34
Good luck to you guys with this one, that's for sure.

I think I have a spare set of plastic cambelt covers you can have (but they will have 3s-ge (not gte) wrote on them. I'll have a dig around for ya soon as I can.

Hmm.. should have been 8 images, 4 via my public address and 4 via private (so i can see what they look like!).. I've taken out the private IP addresses in case they were causing a problem.

I'm re-doing the Escort interior and will be bracing the chassis with some extra tubes running from the tunnel out to the sills. The seats will be mounted on those tubes with a few flat plates, rather than being bolted to the floor as they would normally be.

Shugsta
25-10-2006, 19:26
Have you completely removed the pics now John? Would be nice to see them mate.

Thanks for putting those up John. If they are as good as they look then I'm well chuffed I got them :hehe:. My MK1a has the original grey and black seats and I think they go well with the black paintwork. If that's anything to go by then these should suit nicely. :shades:

shugs hows the swap coming on, have anything left to source..?

Shugsta

shugs hows the swap coming on, have anything left to source..?

Just wheels to get now Adam. I'm going to go with 16's but the tricky bit is finding a set I like that will fit with the ST205 front breaks. Azevs or Borbets would be nice. If I don't find a set of 16's there are some nice 17's out there that I know will fit.

Shugsta
31-10-2006, 23:17
Somebody please tell me that these wheels will accomodate ST205 brakes.   .

http://www.rarerims.co.uk/alloys.php?product_id=2adef42c25dfdc5daa49e41dc6f9 78f2&startrow=0 The rims are 16 x 8" and ET35. It mensions that you can fit from a 195. Is that not pushing it a bit for 8's? I'd be looking to fit 205 / 225.

They're exactly what I had in my minds eye, Japanese retro, deep dish.

Does anyone happen to know the following dimensions? (David yours was the best photo I could find) Just thought David, it might be an idea if next time I'm in Motherwell I could stop by with a ruler. Would be nice to see your 1.5 in the flesh.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/10/147.jpg

What I'm thinking is... if I know the widest points/area that the brakes take up, I could write to Rota and ask if the wheels will fit with the brakes. Probably a long shot but I've got to try.

superchargedsam
31-10-2006, 23:24
nice rims for sure shugs but not sure it will work ! the ST205 does sit on 16s as standard but the insside of the nasty 3 spokes it comes with are quite flat but not sure of the ET of them ! Looking at when I had pauls old one for an hour or so those calipers are quite a way out and u would have been hard pushed to get a credit card between spoke and caliper (and it had the celica wording ground down as that would defo have rubbed the spokes big time!) !

Not want to wreck your dreams of those bad arse wheels but could be tight !

Shugsta
31-10-2006, 23:37
I know where you're coming from Sam. I kinda realise it's a long shot, but hey, nothing ventured and all that. As much as I like the wheels, I ain't losing the 205's.

It'll still be really handy If I know the dimmensions for the breaks. There are a few wheel shops I could drop into to measure some 16's.

29-11-2006, 20:55
Stu, things are still moving mate. Shouldn't be too long now before Paul can make a start to the swap. There's been a bit of planning going on in the background for some "other" work that's being done. Hopefully it'll all come together soon. I'm not trying to be secretive or anything, just think it's best left to those involved to go public IYSWIM. I'm getting pretty excited about it now though.

Did you find out any more info on what wheels are on Penelope? I've still to get my hands on some 16"ers that'll fit with the ST205's.

Cheers

Ah but when you're fitting ST205 discs and calipers on a Mk1 is the wheel weight an issue?;)

Know what ya mean fella but any reduction in unsprung wieght is a hoog advantage as not only does it allow the suspension to do its job better but redcues the gyroscopic effect when truning, this only really applies at speed ! major major issue on bikes due to the angles of lean the wheel hits etc but not such a biggy on a car, but lower wheel mass also helps incrase accelration, again only marginally (or fractionally) but all help is good !

he he
cheers

but i will say 1 thing which i was not happy about and would like to apolagise to paul for
in jap performance mag there was bit about me saying teh the turbo was to heavy rubbish etc..... what a load of crap most of what was said in that artice was said by my engine builder i would love a mk1.5 would love the turbo and am in aw of what paul does
so sorry paul if you read it and was offended but was not by me
i just wanted to do something different like you did when you did the mk1.5 for the first time
still gonna get a 1.5 one day has to be a turbo not v6 i have a v6 although it is a calibra i want a turbo one just preference
pete

Paul Woods
12-02-2007, 18:57
no probs pete,i hadnt read it anyway....but now i know about it, i hate you lol joking mate.

ah i thought you meant SC's in general, your beast is a different kettle of fish entirely! id love to see yours side by side with a 1.5,that'd be cool.

pistol pete
12-02-2007, 19:04
yeah me too... id love to see a mk1.5 full stop only ever saw one once and that was 2 years ago :( :( :( :(
oh sc in gerneral they would walk all over
i took steve kingsnorth out in mine (he has a sc with big pulley) and needless to say when he got out he wanted some of his heart tablets :) adn he was a bit red
made me laugh though seen as though i was being gentle with him as i know what he is like
must get a decent vid of mine when weather is better will get the RR vid up when i get it done

how does the v6 compare to the turbo? is which is quicker i guesss teh v6 just has loads more low down grunt .. is the v6 more suited to the mk2 and turbo to the mk1?? i wanna see some diecent vid of a mk1.5

Paul Woods
12-02-2007, 19:11
mk1 v6 v mk1 turbo is tricky,mk1 turbo is a raw animal that explodes forward when the boost comes in,v6 is much more refined and yes probably better suited to the mk2 but its still a lovely engine for the mk1...i wouldnt like to put money on which would be quicker.

pistol pete
12-02-2007, 19:19
hhmmm i like the raw animal thing like mine if i want refinded i would not be putting a different engine in a mk1 i would just get a bm i love raw animal instincts of a mk1 so turbo it will defo be,
that is one thing i miss in mine is the turbo spooling up and because its a sc and is instant i can "feel" slower due to not having the turbo spool" i.e. my mate has a 450hp scort cossie mine keeps with but when his turbo comes in even thought its a bigger car feeels a lot more savage than mine because teh sc is already going if, that makes sense
some poeple say it has taken on the characteristics of a bigger car in that you are going a lot faster than it seems which is unusual for a mk1 - but then i am used ot it
p.s. you are more than welcome for a little drive at jae in mine paul to see what you think

Paul Woods
12-02-2007, 19:22
id like that mate! you will get a few offers of a 1.5 ride out as well no doubt.

I'll be at JAE Pete so your more than welcome to have a go in mine. This car used to have an AE92 GZE that dyno'd at 197bhp. It'd be cool to go out in yours to feel what the 60 or so more ponies you've squeesed out of her is like.

pistol pete
12-02-2007, 20:11
thats what i like to here
i am sure i will use more fuel up there than getting there but all part of the fun better start saving for fuel 115 miles to a tank maybee a little bit more for motorway driving
200 miles from my house
3/4 tanks there and back + 1 tank for there 4/5 tanks of fuel for one weekend -- trees hug my car as it goes past :hidesbehi
the difference between a normal sc with big pulley etc is amazing (blokes facce in his m3 when a e reg standard looking mr2 overtook him after he laughed at my exhaust at the roundabout and cut me up- priceless) i still need to get the smaller levin pulley for the supercharger (if anyone has one spare) for that bit more boost then get it mapped in more power,,,, much harder getting more power out teh sc tha the turbo i have found hence why i will get a mk1.5 then tune it ... lots

Paul Woods
13-02-2007, 06:56
thats the golden ticket with the 3s-gte pete, doesnt take a lot to get it up to 350/400bhp.

today saw the engine and box jet washed and started to rebuild.... first was the plenum,it was treated to some matt silver....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/75.jpg

and then the cam cover painted gloss black...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/76.jpg

Ive fitted a replacement fuel rail and injectors as the old ones were burnt! as was the engine harness which has also been replaced....actually its rev2 stuff going back onto a rev1 engine,a few things are different,so far the knock sensor has needed a new plug on it.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/77.jpg

Also i managed to fit the new throttle body/dizzy and leads....

today saw the gearbox all jollied up and ive fitted a new timing belt and clutch....so this is just about ready to go in.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/92.jpg

Attention then turned to the car, shes in a little bit of a state but im going to sort it all out...first thing was to get her on her skates...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/93.jpg

These let me push it around the workshop and i can crawl under the back.

I also managed to drop the tank today and fitted a walbro pump,no pics of that as i was up to my eyes in clarts and didnt want to muck the camera up.

Next job was to gut the bay and boot, the engine was already out on this one but there was a right rats nest of wiring and pipes to get rid of...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/94.jpg

Now i know it doesnt look too pretty at present but it will....

Next was grinding the mounts off, well air chisel, same thing but with no sparks in your ears! oh dear ive found a big rotten patch,so i chopped it out, this will get plated over before the mounts go in....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/95.jpg

And the mount chiselled off the drivers side...no rot this side
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/96.jpg

Final job today was cutting the rear wall out, also my weapon of choice...every home should have one.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/97.jpg

Hopefully tomorrow the jig goes in and i will get some fresh mounts welded in.

Long story cut short.... Just in from a client night where a friend Jock introduced me to his colleague Ricky who was about to squander a small fortune on dropping a Beams into the back of his MK2 NA. Promptly a PDA showing a certain Mk2 V6 conversion package was flung in his direction. Then it dawned on me that there might be an update on my swap. The bastard wouldn't give me my PDA back and saw today's progress before me. Needless to say, Ricky is now a TB convert and he'll be giviin' you call in due course Dr. Woods. [DELAYED REACTION] :jump: :jump: :jump:Great progress Paul, will PM you back in the morning about the cable mate.

The road to lanark is fucking awesome, never done it in anything other than my van and always liked it!
Need to be dry though ;)

Used to live in Lanark and my first MK1 used to get a roasting on route to Hamilton along that road. There is not many overtaking spots and if you get stuck behind an old boy taking his missus out to pick strawberries at the garden centres you need to get the hamlet out!!! No fear of that this time of year right enough. Probably get stuck behind a gritter!

Just like an old girldfriend though, its been a while since I have been up it.

Paul Woods
16-02-2007, 17:26
Ok first job of the day was to get some metal back into that passenger inner wing,it was very weak so a nice big strong patch was called for....all seam welded.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/99.jpg

This is in a crucial area as we need good support for the new mount.

Next the WS jig was bolted in place,as you can see its a simplified affair compared to the TB jig but it does the same job....then the mount plates were welded in....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/100.jpg

Finally with all top plates added i seam sealed the whole lot up,this is applied liberally just like toyota do and will look good when the whole bay is painted...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/101.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/02/102.jpg

So monday should see the boot wall completed and the whole bay painted in a fresh coat of black, might even get the engine in too!

It's got KYBs and poly bushes done Ad, it'll get the Tubby arb fitted too. Currently stock rear brakes and of course the front ST205s you machined for me.

There is a fair bit of bodywork being done after the conversion but I don't know how long it'll be for some of the parts to arrive that are needed. Because of that Paul advised that the breaks will be done once the bodywork is finished to avoid them seizing/rusting up while sitting.

Hey jimi, long time no see mate:wave: . That was an fun meet, really enjoyed that day.

Have you come up with any new mods for the MK1? I might have to invest in your electric engine lid release. Did you ever work out if the rs gas struts would lift the lid by themselves on release? Good to see you back on TB, stop by more often

Thats coming on nicely, Paul would you recommend getting new engine mount bushes for the swaps? or are most of the orginal bushes up to the job?

Paul Woods
21-02-2007, 19:16
the original turbo ones are fine but in some cases id use polyurethane on the torque mounts if they looked weak.Ive got no torque mounts for your swap as yet so poly is probably the best route for your car,it does tend to cause a fraction more vibration at idle (mirror shake) but taking a drill to the poly mounts lessens the harshness.

Paul Woods

well a big bollocked exhaust system! thats what got done today,it was harder than i thought making this beasty fit, usually fitted to mk2's with plenty of room to hang it,not something we have on a mk1!

I chopped it up into its component parts and rewelded the whole thing to make it 1.5 friendly....

Not a bad system at all, should sound the dognuts! (insert forthcoming smiley here)

today was a day of tying up loose ends, bleeding clutch, mounting battery in the front, fitting driveshafts, fitting speedo cable, attaching throttle cable and doing the million little jobs here there and everyfcukingwhere!!! :)

Then i went to start the beast but was confronted by the immobiliser from hell....this thing was all homebuilt but ive never seen so many miles of 2 core cable on a car! it was everywhere! it was cutting power to everything and there was no way i could get it to graft so off it came.

Ive got to fit a factory ignition switch tomorrow and then she fires up....for now though the conversion is finished, just got to add a water injection kit at a later date...heres the money shot....

Absolutely.... but will have to wait until completion of phase 2 though. There's a whole lot of bodywork getting done that includes the fitting of Sam's StyleAuto kit so won't have any photo opportunities until that's done.

Looking AWESOME there guys!

another soldier in the fight against the evil mk2 has arisen!

When's she coming home Shugs? I wanna come see it!

EDIT - think you could make it to this on saturday? (10th march) http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=57079/finish=15/start=0.html

Shugsta

Unfortunately she'll no be home for a wee while yet mate. Phase 2 has still to be carried out where the bodywork will be restored and first StyleAuto kit produced by Sam will be fitted. I'll keep you posted, as soon as she's home you're more than welcome to have a burl in her.:driving:

Am planning to go along to the open day as Graydon is a mate of mine. Possibly have some things to attend to that day but will make every effort to get there for at least and hour or two.

Cheers fellas  I'm well chuffed. Things are moving on phase 2 as we speak so with all that's to be done it'll take a bit time to complete.. It's in good hands so no worries. More than a bit excited about the day she comes back home though:driving: Apparently she sounds good too but I couldn't tell you much about that....eh Paul?:poke2: :)

Love the immobiliser too, think how quick the car will be with all that weight removed from it, should be enough scrap copper there to offset the cost of the conversion!! :)
