Hi fellas.

I just started my conversion from the 4age to 3gts. It will take some time i think cause i`m not really familiar enough to do it the "easy way".
Great info here and some serious amount of guides to read about. *CLAP*

I`ve had my 86'mod for about 7 years and am now in early stages to do the conversion. I thought i`d buy an engine from fensport with all included package. It`s not very cheap but i need it all to get this done.

I`m not far from removing the old engine but came across a problem. This is the last of the electrical wiring connection to be removed. Might not be hard but it is for me. Images are below and is takes from behind the exhaust manifold, behind another function i`m not sure what is. Looks like ground.. You can see the oil filter on the top left hand side. The bolt marked on the image is not coming off as i cant get any tools in there and now it`s gone and become round instead of 6 edges. Pics are taken from below looking straight up.

Keep in mind that i`m Norwegian and am a bit lost on the technical words so please give it to me with spoons if someone would be kind enough to respond.

Waiting (un)patiently:hehe:

Just remove the starter motor?

Howdy.

Right we are looking I think at the feed to the starter motor solenoid. Do you actually need to undo this or can you leave it on and remove the engine with the engine loom in place including this wire? (Not sure myself, haven't seen a 4ag in a while!) If not do you have a cheap ring spanner you can bend a bit to make it fit into that space? Last resort might be to remove the starter motor from the engine and then undo the bolt.

Good lock,

Owen.

Thanks for responding. I made two threads on this newbie as i am but i got the same suggestion on both so i`ll just remove the starter engine. Thank you.

Hopefully i wont be installing this again cause it is so tight in that space. Oh wait, i got a 2 ltr in there instead.

The thing i`m most afraid of now is actuelly making the enigne mountings even though they are explained in detail here. When that time comes.

Is buying the engine from fensport a good idea btw. I have only heard good things from them and they have a lot of experiance in this area.

Enough for tonight. Back on it tomorrow:)

Hi Shorty. Glad to hear you have a plan, oh and welcome to the forum by the way.

Silly question, I know you said you're from Norway but where are you now? If in the UK then there's a jig to make putting the engine mounts in very simple. It's available to any member free of charge providing they've paid the club ?10 in the past to become a "big member".

Don't worry, if you have the ability to take an engine out then you have the ability to complete the swap. Don't be afraid to ask anything no matter how small or silly it may seem, all questions will be answered with respect on this site.

As for Fensport well I've heard good and bad things about them. Check you're not paying too much and that you agree exactly what you want first. Ask for some photos of the engine and post them on here and we'll all have a look and tell you what we think.

Good luck,

Owen.

welcome to TB shorty,as the lads say just chop through the engine harness wiring or unplug the whole loom at the ecu/N1 and take the engine out complete with the engine harness,no need to remove that nut.

Good luck with your swap, all the help you need is here, just keep us fed with lots of nice pics! we like eye candy.

Wow. I must say you people are polite and helpful. I will do a lot of searching before asking but it`s nice to know that i can ask.

I live in ?lesund, west coast of Norway. I will ask for photos regarding the engine itself but also about the other stuff that follow in the package. I know there`s all to run the engine, ecu, hybrid driveshafts, etc. I don`t know if there`s an intercooler included or exhaust system with it. Going to make everything ready before i order the engine. Costs like 1500 for it all. I think that i a lot of cash but if it includes all i need then it`s not that bad.

Some images for you as i`m removing.

This is under the removal of the tubes. Lots of brown water and rust.

http://img433.imageshack.us/img433/1781/cloggedclosekf8.jpg

The pipe inside the ring is completely clogged. No woder it doesn`t run very well. Missed the zoom on it but if you use your imagination you can see it`s clogged.

Soon out. Got only the engine mounts left. Then starts the big job cleaning, fixing, painting etc. Looking forward to it. :booz:

hehe... so there`s rivalery between the countries huh. Just like sweden and Norway. They are soo hopeless!;)

Anyway, i`ll bring some more photos today cause i`m making ready to remove the engine. Just gotta clear out some silicone hoses that takes up some space. Then i`ll hook up some chain i bought and a engine lift.

I got off the six nuts on each driveshaft but i wish i knew that if i had it in neutral and handbrake off i could just turn for each nut. I struggeled quite a lot but got them off eventually. Think i`ll remove it tomorrow.

One thing though. I will haveto remove the driveshafts completely right. Paul says in the remove engine guide that you can hang them up, but i can`t get them to bend away to clear the engine. Anyway, i`ll remove them i think.

Hi shorty.

Right I take it you are removing the 4age drive-shafts and replacing with ones from a turbo?

If so make sure you undo the big nut that holds the shaft into the wheel hub before you remove the other end from the gearbox. That way it's held for you (in gear with the handbrake on) rather than just spinning round in the air. (Like I did )

Good luck,

Owen.

but fear not, simply letting the car down off its jack with the wheel back on ive found that the ground and newtons law will hold the wheel solid for driveshaft nut removal. My engine removal guide presumes you are refitting a 4a-ge (silly me!) hence the advice to just tie the shafts up out of the way, when the engine comes off its mounts it moves forward enough to clear the tied up shafts, but seeing as you are doing a conversion get rid of them...and breathe!!! nearly took sams title off him then for the longest sentence without a fullstop lol

hello shorty!
(?lesund og greier, hehe, fleire og fleire som vil ha turbo i mk1 no;-))
If you want a engine, i would recommend a rearcut of a mk2 turbo, we at toyparts.no can get that for you from denmark. I also got a celica alternator and bracket, wich will make it a little easier. and i got some st185 outer cv-joints.
You should pop by our workshop in bergen, or the toyota sportscar meeting on dagali (geilo) this weekend.

Hei Amund:)

We could probably do this in Norwegian but since there are a "few" english speaking members i`ll write in eng. Atleast i`ll try.

The reason i go to fesport for an engine is that they supply like a package of what i need. I don`t have the skills to judge which driveshafts, outer cv-joints, alternator etc will fit the mk1. I`m currently writing a software that will do this swap for me. Not easy i can tell you.

I i get a rearcut i will still need to import it and stuff right? And one more thing, have you gotten one of these (mk1.5) approved by "biltilsynet"?:rozzer:

I haven`t ordered engine yet so any suggestions will be great. Engine comes out today. Hopefully:mrgreen:

Ok. I ran into a little problem again. I`m doing this alone and i`m struggeling to remove the driveshaft. Pics below on my issue.

I roped it uo to get a better angle.

Any good advice on tools or tips?

The problem is this. I haveto push it out cause this is the end of the shaft right?

Yes.

All I did was to put the nut back on the wrong way round (so the large flat side is out) then hit it with a big rubber hammer.

Looks like you're almost there!

Good luck,

Owen.

Here`s some photos that i took while doing the removal. Here you can think to yourselfes, "why didn`t he just do that", why didn`t he just do this!" . Don`T care. It`s out:blabla:

First i got worried that it would not be enough room inbetween the "legs" of my lift.

From the back and now i`m ready. You can see the Haynes book there toolol

I made a custom chain that i thought would work pretty well. It did!

Here is the chain fitted.
http://img106.imageshack.us/img106/3517/chainfittedfl0.jpg

As you can see i used the wrong hooks cause it hangs in a bad angle. Probably because of the gearbox weight.

good progress! bye bye evil 4a-ge.

Shorty
09-09-2006, 15:37
I`m not sure on the total due to import fees and shipping. The complete (almost complete anyway) costs 1500 ex wat from fesport. So on top of that i haveto pay norwegian wat which is 25% (i`m hoping that fensport will write 500 on the reciept instead of 1500 then i get 25% out of 500 instead of 1500). Then shipping from UK. Total = Guessing about 2500 uk money inc all.

Not sure though.

Splendid work!!

Total = Guessing about 2500 uk money inc all.

:hmm: :hmm: For that sort of money we could probably buy you a complete working MK2 turbo, drive it to Norway, tell customs we're just on holiday, give it to you and catch a boat home! Then you could sell the MK2 chassis and get a big chunk of your money back!! :hmm:

Owen.

Shorty
09-09-2006, 20:41
hehe. we probably could but the problem would apear when i send my car to a rutine 2-4 year control and they see it`s not the 1.6 engine inside the engine bay. It has to be imported or gone through customs and registered to make it approved by that car approval place... eh, it`s got a name i just can`t think of it.

What i would like though is to send a trusted member here money to buy things like brake discs, pads, hoses, intercooler etc, and send it to another user here, and he sends it to me like a gift package. no wat just fun:) That is bit of a stretch but maby someone bothers later on in my build. (hopefully)

I agree with owen ! could defo buy you a whol car for not much less and drive it over and fly back ! But from my experiance of being in Norway its ferkin expensive over there for normal stuff like food and drink !

Shorty
09-09-2006, 21:04
It really is expensive. Insane is the word for it. But still. We haveto show our car once every 4 years (2 years if it`s older than a certain aga i`m unsure of) so if they find a 3SGTE inside they wont approve and they take my plates. I`ll check up on the rules conserning this and get back to ya`ll.

meanwhile i found this:
http://www.jazzproparts.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3SGTE+-+MR2+91-93

Seems exactly what i need. Exept for the driveshafts maby

Shorty
09-09-2006, 22:24
Not only do they sell the engine but as it says "3SGTE (MR2) Engine+Tranny", you get a tranny aswell. If your into these kind of fetish stuff, then this is the engine to buy:gay: :D

if you buy a rearcut from toyparts, we will do all the import details around getting it delivered to you.
"biltilsynet" is always a problem, but I am in dialog with them. And maybe germany and t?v is a solution, next summer i can tell you how to get it done.

give me a call some day, and maybe I can help you sorting out the correct parts.

it's pretty expensive here in Norway yes! I am looking into buying a new car next summer, and lexus is350 is a alternative. in the us it costs 35.000$, but here in norway it's 82.000$ extra in taxes! believe it or not.......
and it's every two years we have to show our car to a approved workshop, but a new car doesn't have to do it the first 5 years...
