Ive just been looking around and i found this article on Wikipedia:icon_eek:

The 5VZ-FE is a 3.4 L (3378 cc) engine. Bore is up to 93.5 mm (3.7 in) and stroke is 82.0 mm (3.2 in). Output is 190 hp (142 kW) at 4800 rpm with 220 ft?lbff (298 Nm) of torque at 3600 rpm. It has a cast iron engine block and aluminum DOHC cylinder heads. It uses MFI fuel injection, has 4 valves per cylinder with bucket tappets and features large cast connecting rods, a one-piece cast camshaft, and a cast aluminum intake manifold.

The 5VZ-FE also continued the 3VZ-FE's trend of being far overbuilt for its intended application. A handful of built versions exceed 900 hp (670 kW), and some stock engines can produce 450 hp (336 kW) or more. This has become a popular engine to consider when doing engine swaps with the avalibility of the 3.4 L TRD supercharger and custom turbocharger setups.

Jeez... 900bhp.... sounds pretty good to meee. I was actually looking @ that on wikkipedia just the other day, isn't it a lexus engine or something?

It says it comes in these:

* Toyota Tacoma
* Toyota Tundra
* Toyota T-100
* Toyota 4Runner

They might have a lexus out there somewhere with it in it though:)

Ouch - 900bhp in a mk1 chassis would be like putting a lion in a cardboard box and poking it with a starter key...!!

The phrase "To infinity, and beyond" comes to mind. :D

Have a search on the mr2board.com few 5vzfes in mk2s -one with a turbo ! Also a bloke using a 3mzfe 3.3 all alloy with vvt-i :rolleyes:

The 5vz-fe engine is a great one! Just as bullet proof as the 3vz but with .4L more and no distributor!

I helped write that article on the 5vz, i have worked with them for over 4 years now starting with my S/C Tacoma, now going to high rpm (so far thats the plan) MKII as well as a customers 400-500whp Turbo 5vz swap in progress as well.

A thing to note about these engines is that they are a bit taller then the standard v6 due to the intake plenum which was designed for low end torque.

Another note is the redline on these badboys is only 5500-5700rpm using the stock ecu. I am just about to start up the first ever beyond 5500-5700rpm 5vz running haltech and my custom S2S Cams/Valve springs (valve springs are NEEDED to go above stock redline...they are VERY weak!).

I should have the dyno setup for the end of the month (mid oct the latest!)

I will be glad to help out in regards to the 5vz but i dont know much about the MKI yet as i just got a 89 s/c which is my economical beater rigt now :afro:

Also to note that Node on mr2board has built a twin turbo/single turbo mr2 already and is working on his next MONSTER 5vz.

900 bhp in a 2200lb car... ding ding ding we have a winner, how hard is it to get 550-600whp out of the 5VZ's weasy?

Well we will find out in a VERY short time. I am building a car that will be roughly 400-500 and so is node. I think nodes will be done very soon while my customers car should be started late October (been many delays to get things right)

To say how hard it is....well its not...get the right turbo, an intercooler a piggyback (if you keep the stock redline) then your off!

We are already seeing 350+ whp in Tacomas with turbos and thats with a 25+% loss in the 4wd auto tranny!

weasy good to see you on TB fella! this engine sounds like it has a lot of potential although we have got to get it to rev higher or the top speed is going to be terrible,im thinking 120mph ish through an E153 mr2 trans?

Well after some basic math stuff I got that this engine will rev fine on the cast rods up till roughly 7250 rpm.
I have set the redline on my engine to 7000rpm.
The cams and mild headwork along with higher volume oil pump should get this thing rev'ving nicley.....

Its a 82mm stroke engine so it wants to rev :)

ive been told that vz series engines have an oil pump bypass valve fitted so that anything over 6K rpm it will open up and bypass the pump as the stock pump already delivers too much oil at high rpm? if thats the case you shouldnt need a higher volume pump? what do u think?

Oh and what do you think is holding the 3vz back from revving higher? the heads? cams? id love to get one revving into 7.5k

The problems i have heard is pressure loss up high....i never heard of the whole bypass valve opening at higher rpm thats new to me! NOt to say i dont believe it but i have to look into it. I decided to go with high volume because it will produce the needed pressure up top.

Typically everything is set by a relief valve so only hfter a certain psi will it unload.
BTW Thanks for the welcome :)

Oh as for the 3v
A MAJOR downfall on the VZ's was headwork...you need headwork and cams to do the job right. I have only down a 3 angle valve grind and a bowl cut in the head just to start as well as my cams, tho mild, should help things a bit in the 5vz.

Its funny becuase in the MZ motors they went upsidedown...the heads are nice but the bottom end lacks strength...

so are 5vz and 3vz heads interchangable?

WeasyS2S
10-09-2006, 07:43
no they are not....you can implement the 3vz distributor on the 5vz or the 5vz's crank and cam sensors on the 3vz.

Sparky

so what is the stroke of the 3vz? if the 5vz is not bored too much larger then I presume that the 5vz could be a stroker crank for the 3vz. or is it a shorter stroke?

what affect would this have on redline?

WeasyS2S

5vz bore is 93.5 stroke is 82 (SHOOORT :) )
3vz bore is roughly 87 stroke is 82

So the vz series share similar cranks (same stroke) but the bore is what makes the diff...

Now since you guys may have access to the 4vz or 2vz engines you may be lucky! Those engines have 62mm strokes...i have been trying to get one for so damn long now!

I just happen to like the light weight, the displacment (wish you had over 3l there eh?) and the vtac rotflmao

p.s.
europe killed VVTL-i, I would be enjoying lift by now if it werent for the stick emissions there :(
