Well chaps we have been asked to do a swap for a fairly new member to Two brutal, namely Fizzy. He did originaly ask Paul to do the swap, but as you all probably know he is fully booked till November. As Fizzy would like to take his converted car to a show in mid August, he enquired via this forum if anyone else was prepared to take on the swap instead.

So, we offered to to the swap and after a few eMails, phone calls and stuff, he brought his Camry donor to us yesterday on his way back from buying it. After seeing my car and its nice shiney engine bay and me taking him for a quick spin in it, I think he was rather impressed by it's performance and swap quality - note he has a mk2 Turbo right now, with a blown snail.

The Camry donor, is a real cracker and an absolute sin to destroy really. It has covered 197k miles, but honestly you would not know it if you were to see it and hear that gorgeous engine. The body is in near perfect condition and the vehicle has a full service history up to 162k miles!

So as we currently only have room to store one car, we decided that the Camry just had to go as quickly as possible. So today was spent mostly stripping the donor car into it's component parts. The engine was not removed, but is ready to come out first thing tomorrow morning.

Here are some piccies of today's Brutality for your viewing pleasure.

Bloody amateurs! We demand the real Peebs! Get the grinders or leave this forum! :D

thats a seriously nice donor. Wouldn't bother pulling it apart having seen the insides of mine after similar mileage, just drop and swap!

It can turn into a how to for a mk2 conversion

:hmm: actually be quite useful for me :shifty:

Fizzy

It drove well on the way there too. Was starting to get to like it too much. :icon_conf

....but the rear view mirror kept on drooping all the time. It had to go. Ok, so it also had some worrying clonk from the suspension at times, and it looked like it may have been in a little front end shunt - when opening the bonnet, it was catching on the wipers.....

I'm the 3rd owner (this time not lucky for it though :P ) and the 1st owner appears to have maintained it well - hence all the paperwork upto 165k. Shame the guy I bought it off seemed to just run it around regardless for the last year.

Never mind, its no matter to me now. :D

Didn't look that clean when I dropped it off as it looks in the first pic, honest!! :P

Peebs
26-06-2006, 21:22
LoL@Jiffy, don't worry there is plenty of brutalisation planned for the near future :) And the inside is as good as the out matey, the ciggie lighter has never been used, neither has the ashtry, bit of wear on the driver's seat, but thats about it. Pristine motor for its age.

Cheers for the comment on progress, Karmeleon. It took a lot less time than we expected tbh, but then again there were two of us on the case.

More piccies to follow too

Edit:

....but the rear view mirror kept on drooping all the time. It had to go.
Haha, I see, ah well, we certainly ain't puttin it back together again if you change your mind lol

We didn't bother cleaning it matey. Does look good though, the flash bought out the paintwork really nicely wethinks.

Update coming up - with more piccies - in a short while. Just have to do a bit of photoshopping first. Just thought I'd come answer any q's or comments.

Well, plans for that have been in the pipeline since before my own swap, but we are using this first one as a sort of "test bed" so to speak as we have not dealt with the public in this way before. So if all goes well then mebe, juss mebe.
And we'll be getting the lightsabres out shortly

Okay here's a quick look at today's progress

First of all we lifted Mr T's little sekrit from its hidey hole...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/GoingUp.jpg

...the camry's poor old suspension seemed to be quite relieved at this point...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/HalfOut.jpg

...then we whispered to the engine where it was destined for, and it started dribbling.
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/EngineOut.jpg

Then we stripped out the rest of the Camry...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/GuttedCamry.jpg

...and levitated it with our magical powers...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/FloatingCamry.jpg

..ahem, okay, alright, here's our lil' sekrit on that one.
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/FloatingSekrit.jpg

Then we removed the gearbox, torque convertor and flex plate (sorry forgot bout pics of that) so we could slap it on the engine stand...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/Onstand.jpg
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day2/OnStand2.jpg
...so it is now ready to be stripped down,, cleaned and painted over the course of the next few days.

Getting the shell scrapped tomorrow as the Fizzy should be bringing his MR2 up to us on thursday.

Off out with in my own one right now. So see you guys a little later, tata.

Great work guys, always amazes me how the v6 engine goes straight into a mk2 bay without any cutting. When you see it outside the camry it looks as if it will never fit.

27-06-2006, 22:07
Owen, whassamattawivyaman? I though you were brutal !?

Oh btw, for your's and Jiffy's benefit, we actually used grinders today - a 4" one for a stubborn bolt head and a big eff off 9 incher to hack the rear suspension arms off.

Phil - I know what you mean about the engine looking so huge just after being extracted from a camry bay. To be fair though, they usually go on a diet shortly afterwards as the lose the power steering pump, the aircon compressor and that bloody fumungous auto gearbox - it's nearly as big as the engine itself, hehe.

Glad you decided to register though - finally. (she's away from home right now - miss you XXX :)

Update coming soon, gotta sort piccies and stuff

Lodge -

hey nice work guys!what are you doing with all the bits? :boogie:

Well lodge, therin lies a story. We are obviously having to charge Fizzy for this conversion and we didn't want to try to undercut PW or overcharge at the same time. I decided to have a sneaky peek at Pauls prices. But, ahem, I fewked up!

I didn't want us to be cheaper than Paul or more expensive this way only geography matters, if you see what I mean.

But I quoted Pauls lowest price when I should have quoted for a more expensive option. So, we came to an agreement with Fizzy that we would store/strip/and ebay parts of the car for him and have them picked up from here and all money sent to him (to save him the trouble or transport or bits back home) in exchange for us to keep other parts of the car for our own time and trouble of stripping the car.

But, as we have done that bit so quickly (Stripdown), we are going to make sure that that Fizzy gets that back as much as the Camry cost him and then some.

If we do actually setup in business, we have agreed with Paul that we will be using a simmilar pricing plan to his own.

Oooh, today saw some great brutality, which I am sure you will all enjoy :)

You guys are always screamin for photos, so get ready for a surprise, coz here's a million...

We got in nice and early, only to find that the Camry Faries had visited in the night.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/CamryFairies.jpg

Well okay, not really, but here comes the brutal bit...

Firstly this happened...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry1.jpg

But it appears that the Camry (or the driver, perhaps :) was a little horny. Tony (FourVeeSix) is the guy on the left, laughing at the last comment on this post probly, hehe.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry3.jpg

Looks like the Rover's suspension was a little unhappy about all this though...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry4.jpg

WTF! ?
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry5.jpg

Tony plays "tug 'o' war" with a skip wagon...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry6.jpg

...and that was that - Music plays "Bye, bye, Camreey, byebye, byeee, bye"
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/FarewellCamry7.jpg

After that was all done and dusted we set about ripping Fizzy's newly aquired lump to bits - opps, soz Fizz...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/ComingApart1.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/ComingApart2.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/ComingApart3.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/ComingApart4.jpg

The timing was out by about 1.5 teeth on the rear bank, and although the cam belt was changed about 15k miles previously it had been fitted backwards - bloody spanner moneys. Also two of the cam tensioner bearings sound very rough and we have advised Fizzy to have them replaced.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/TimingOut.jpg

Here's me attacking the cam pulleys - ugly bast ain't I ? hehe
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/MeEngine.jpg

Good job Fizzy had us change the head gaskets, because of this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/GasketSplit.jpg

...and this. Looks like the gasket has been battered by the valves on two cylinders - must have been incorrectly fitted and overhanging the bores.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/GasketBattered.jpg

While Tony got busy doing this sort of thing...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/Cams.jpg
btw, forgot to get pics of it, but the camshaft bearings and seats are in absolutely tip top nick, looks brand new, amazing stuff from toyota for an engine of this milage.

I got busy with this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/Acis1.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/PlenumFilthy.jpg

This bit just had to go too...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/NastyEGR.jpg

And after a little bit of this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/MeCleaning.jpg

...and a bit of ally blanking fabrication (sorry no pics) ... you get this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/PlenumPaintReady.jpg

...and this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/PlenumClean1.jpg

...and even this...
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/PlenumClean2.jpg

Tony got to this stage after much elbow grease - (sorry for no in betweeny pics)
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/HeadsOff1.jpg

http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/HeadsOff2.jpg

..and managed to clean this also - came up nice we think.
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h211/Peebs_2006/Cover.jpg

So, all in all, another good days progress, but we do fear we may get held up a little by some of the parts we require having to be ordered from the states. Of course this being out first conversion for someone else and being a little disorganised this time (as we took on this job at short notice) this should not be the case in future swaps (if we get any :)

However, Fizzy is bringing his beloved MR2 to us tomorrow and so we will at least have something to be carrying on with for the moment, as there are a few other things that need doing to the car that we can be getting on with.

Rest assured Fizz, that your V6 was covered over for the night and at all times when any dust creating work was being performed, also your car will be covered with a dust sheet at all times when we are not working on it.

Cheers peeps

Catcha later.

quality spannering chaps, really going great guns there! an observation if i may, that cam timing is definately out but its impossible for it to be 1.5 teeth out,its either 1 or 2 teeth out so make sure that crank is on TDC and everything else is lined up,its also easy to fit the cam pulleys back to front (hi jiff!!! :) ) which WILL cause a half tooth discrepancy on the cam timing.

From memory the left pulley has 3v and 4v on its face, that faces outwards and the cam dowel is located at 3v.The right pulley has an outer lip facing outwards and a small notch on the outer rim....tell me to shut up if im being mr patronising!

But def cant be 1.5 teeth out, belt wont allow that.

Nice EGR blanking work there peebs! ive done the same to lodges.... you got rid of that camry in record time! nice skip driver skills too, lifting both in one go

Okay today's update is a little breif. And, this is where things are gonna slow down a bit too...

We found yesterday that a couple of the tensioner and idler bearings on the cam belt side on the engine were quite badly shot. So Fizzy ordered a few more bits from the states. Anyone know how long stuff takes to arrive from the US, as a general rule ?

He's going to replace all the bearings, oil pump and water pump. Along with a full head gasket set, gearbox drain plugs and new flywheel bolts. He also has ordered an ally fly, which is currently sitting in customs, we believe.

He bought his MR2 up to us today (damn I forgot to take a piccie - how did I do that ?) along with a few goodies, including

New fly bolts, new gearbox oil, a great looking air filter complete with intake housing and new gearbox plugs. - more pics I forgot, opps. Will grab tomorrow

After taking Fizz to the train station, I got busy with this...

Puzzled fizzies dad ,Why have you got to order spares from America . I thought Toyota were Japanees Also there is a Whacking Toyota factory in Derbyshire .Just a query i am quite shure you know what you are doing as i saw when i was there is this the state of the motor industry now in this country

Peebs
30-06-2006, 13:42
His' Fizzy's Dad, some parts are much cheaper if ordered from the US, so he decided to do that, even though it may take a couple of weeks for them to arrive, but we have plenty to be getting on with, for now anyway :)

Parts are getting cleaned the same way that I have done it since I was a wee lad messing with my scramblers...

Traffic film remover - (used to use washing up liquid and water)
Stiff bristled brushes
Oven cleaner - for tougher stuff
Some fine grade Scotchbrite - for the really tuff stuff
Dremel to finish/polish

Easy Peasy, Lemon Squeezy

Cleaning your ACIS valve has been found to free up around 15-25bhp, as it cokes up over time, due to the EGR chucking loads of nasty stuff back into the engine. But seeing as we are removing the EGR and both crankcase breathers (connected to the plenum), coking of the ACIS valve, throttle body and the inside of the plenum should not be an issue for the rest of the engines life.

Well anyways, not a lot happened swap wise today as Tony has been busily finishing off his own swap and I have been running around buying this and that for Fizzy's swap.

What little did happen were a few photos of the car, the nice shiney new bits
and some other stuff (will post up later - need to sort webspace). We also disconnected all the gubbins in the engine bay ready for us to drop the lump out on Monday.

So here, finaly, is tonight's update.

Here's the car getting jacked up and secured firmly with ramps and old scaffold boards. I know it looks a bit dodgey, but I can tell you from my previous work, on my own car, that you can literally try to rock the car off this arrangement from any direction you like and it just will not budge an inch. Don't worry about the parts being taken off Fizz, they will be kept in a safe place with a cover over them till we need to re-fit them. Lovely colour isn't it ?

Also, we have taken precautions with the paintwork at the rear of the car...

Hi chaps.

Hmm, who needs an alarm? Just put your MR2 in a Seat suit...

Too many chairs in that workshop, though maybe they're for guests?

Nice to see your drill press is bigger than your oven too.

Right enough of the:poke2:, time to say that I'm rather impressed with the work so far. Splended. As for bits from the states I've found it depends very much on the shipping method, less than a week I think is our record though up to a month for the slow boat option. If you happen to use city link then that'll probably double that too :naughty:

BTW fizzy that is a nice coloured car.

All the best lads,

Chairs are, as you say, mainly for guests, but Tony likes to park his saggy old butt from time to time, so they come in handy there too (think I'm in for a wallop :slap: for that comment tomorrow) tee hee.

Oven, what oven ? I see no ships ?

Just got back from my weekend break away, currently at my parents - been catching up, checking out the pics... :D

Thanks for the nice comments guys. I like the colour as well - carribean blue - shame they only did it for a couple of years?

Guys - a little set back with the parts. While on my weekend away, I got a phone call from the place I ordered the parts on line from. Apparantly they can't authenticate the card I used (mastercard) - something to do with the amount I spent - so have asked me to photocopy both sides of the card, and fax it to them along with a (obviously printed) copy of the invoice I received via email.

Does this sound ok?

As for delivery - they didn't really give an option - it just said "best available". Considering it came to about a 3rd of the cost of the order it should be courier service I would have thought!

If I have the option I'll get it sent by ups or something to get her asap... ;)

They would want the photocopies of the card to authenticate it, Don't worry as your protected when you use a credit card, as technically it's the credit card company's money, I recently thought i was being conned, phoned card company, they said that i would'nt lose out if the goods did'nt arrive, but turned up in the end.
Also with card fraud, if you don't have the insurance they offer, you are only responsible for the first ?50 of unauthorised use.

Sorry about the lack of updates and pictures on this thread guys. I had a bit of bad news over the weekend - a good friend of mine had a real bad motorcycle accident on saturday arvo and as I don't know his family too well (till now) I have been busy trying to gain acces to him (he is on a ventilator in the critical trauma unit in Birmingham - close friends and family only).

He has broken a lot of bones including all but 2 of his ribs, and as such is being kept under sedation for his comfort and body stress relief, thankfully though (even with a fractured skull) he was talking coherently just a few hours after the accident to his sister.

Seems like panic time is over now though and have been to visit today, he looks his normal colour (a good sign) and is fighting back very well considering the injuries sustained. Needless to say the guy is gonna be in hospital for a long long time.

May take a while to get the thread back up to speed but as you see, Tony has been busily spannering away by himself and has made good progress in my absence, thanks mate.

Please, if any of you out there are relegious or are a healer of any sort, say a prayer for him or channel your ernergies to him. His name is Ian, and to be honest he could do with all the help he can get right now, thanks in advance.

On another good note - sent my details to Rock auto on monday, via email. 8O Not heard anything and the order status hasn't changed. Decided to give 'em a call - and have been informed that the email was received and the goods have been dispatched on monday - just awaiting the EMS delivery number to be given to them in order to update the order status online. :boogie:

Did some work on your engine today Fizzer, looks like your clutch is shot matey here's a few pics. Don't know how long it's been in the car, but TBH we would not recommend you go for a refit or an exact replacement with this swap. These types of cutches are not really intended for road use and the extra power will shorten the life of this type quite considerably. We recommend you go for an OEM standard jobbie suitable for an MR2 Turbo, will get you a price on one tomorrow.

Ahh cr*p - more expense. Does look a little shot doesn't it? Its actually an uprated helix clutch (not sure if its a stage 1, 2 or whatever) that was in the car when I bought it - which was 2.5 years ago, and around 25k miles - so not done too bad I guess for a performance clutch, considering not certain how it was used before I got it..?

Not been slipping at all, although had started making one or two odd noises ocassionally when engaging after a long motorway run the last few weeks, thought it was just the heat..... guess I know why now. :(

Let me know costs etc - probably a good idea to get thrust bearing replaced at same time? What make of clutch would you recommend if I did want to go down the supercharger route at a later date?

edit: gtschris.com sell oem turbo clutch kits for ?159.99 - that sound about right?

edit 2: fensport do an oem one for the same price, and a standard toyota one for ?200 (both +vat and p&p). Theres also these which I've heard mention of before... http://www.turboclutch.com/sport_toyot.html ...which do a mild upgrade (solid disk/non paddle) 320 torque one which looks ok?

Fizzy
06-07-2006, 10:52
On reflection - I would have had to change it regardless of whether I was getting the v6 installed or sticking with the tubby engine.

The V6SC conversion is using a GT4 clutch apparantly (which is the same as a turbo mr2 I believe) from what I can see so I guess an oem one will be fine if I go SC - in fact as its a smoother power delivery I would guess its easier on the clutch anyway compared to a turbo?

May have a pop into the local toyota dealership lunchtime just to see how much they charge for clutch kits....if only for comparison. ;)

Driftin_AW
06-07-2006, 11:27
have you thought about having the clutch re-lined and the pressure plate stone ground (as you do with flywheels)? IF the clutch isn't too old then there's nothing wrong with doing that, and it should last longer than a stocker would with lots of power + torque going through it

Fizzy

Hmm.... interesting. The clutch is at a guess about 5 years old now, so probably up for a replacement anyway. If the stock clutch will cope easily with the V6 at standard, I'll probably go with that, as it will be quicker to source/sort, and have a nice light/progressive clutch again - which would also supplement the smoothness of the v6 nicely.

Well, been quoted ?238 for pressure plate, clutch and bearing by toyota - although that was apparantly "a rough guess" as they would need my chassis number etc to order correct parts - even though the part numbers looked ok from the epc I checked last night....and no idea how the chassis number would effect the price anyway, but you never know with toyota.... ;)

....and there also maybe a kit which is sold cheaper. usual 2 working day delivery time as well. So pretty easy to get.. :D

All I need to do now is find out if paying an extra ?60+ for a genuine toyota clutch over the "oem" ones sold elsewhere is worth it.. ;)

The OEM NA clutch I bought last has covered around 2500, hard driven, miles before swap and is holding on to the v6 power nicely so far. Great, running a bit low on stuff to do now matey.

BTW, do you ever sleep ? Or are you some relation to Lodgeman ?

Tee Hee :)

Yeah, I sleep... ;) I'm sure one of my ancestors must have been a vampire or something. I tend to revert to being nocturnal in nature pretty easily - especially if I'm on hols....

..being a big coffee drinker :coffee: doesn't help I guess... ;)

How are you getting things soooo clean

Fizzy
08-07-2006, 15:00
Hmm - at a rough guess, I would say degreaser, some elbow grease and then some metal polish afterwards. Being able to strip it down into its component parts, as well as having a dremel or similar tool helps loads.... ;) as does having a lot of patience and the time to do it...

I guess the same applies to a lot of things - its amazing how good things look if you take the time to strip it all down, and clean out the muck from all the nooks and crannies, and bits you could never get to if you left it in one piece.. :P

Thats how I clean up pc's, electrical gear and the like anyhow. No metal polish involved there of course!!! rotflmao

Fizzy's right right guys,

Time is your enemy, but patience is your friend.

The alternator took around an hour and a half - not bad really considering.
I removed the pressed ally cover, applied a little TFR on a 1/2" stiff bristle brush, to the main body, softening the crud that had collected on it, then wiped the major stuff off with a clean dry cloth. Then, using a dremmel with a soft wire brush, bought the surface back to a nearly new looking condition. The shiney ally cover took around 20 mins with a soft nylon dremmel bit and a little T-Cut, though brasso works just as well, then polished it up with another clean rag.

Thanks for all the interest and kind comments guys, makes it all worthwhile :)

head looking nice and fresh there peebs, what did you use on that if anything?

Peebs
09-07-2006, 14:54
Pretty much the same way Adam, but that requires a soft brass brushing over also, to remove the coking. Gasket surface is done with 1200 grit paper folded round a bit of wide flat bar and WD40 sprayed on to help smoothing.

Lessons in cleaning and polishing your bell housing at JAE will be charged at the rate of ?500 per hour - well I have to pay the beer tent man somehow, don't I ?

Here are a couple of pics I grabbed from yesterday, not much happened with swap work today as we both had a few other things to sort out. Back to the grindstone tomorrow though...or should that be flapwheel ?

Also decided to buy a set of poly bushes from twos'r'us after all - guess I should have got them sent straight up to you directly asap if you're running out of stuff to do.... ;)

Actually - while you have you're polishing gear out (oh oh! ) - can you check the exhaust tips? I had a go a them before (with a kitchen pan scrubber pad :icon_eek: ) but they still seem to have a lot of ...erm... bits on 'em? No idea if its tar, bits of metal or what....probably take you 5 mins to sort out the rate your goin'..... :P

Well, we're not gonna let you have it back unless its dry and sunny, rofl.

Sunday is fine matey, older bro welcome too.

Yes Fizzy, best to have the bushes sent direct to us do you still have the unit addy ?

Will have a go at the exhaust tips for you too, when it's ready to go back on.

As for the blue thingys, they are bsv's, which are thermally operated vacuum switching valves. The bottom one, with the grey cap, was for EGR (which is no longer fitted so is now not used) and the top one runs to the fuel evap canister.

Thanks for that Jon. Erm... the bushes were ordered a couple of days ago, and I found a "we tried delivering a parcel" card from royal mail today when I got home, so I'm guessing its the bushes (as the US stuff should arrive via parcelforce?).

Guess I'll know for sure tomorrow. Assume I may as well just bring them up on Sunday rather than post 'em now? Although if I get 'em posted to you first class tomorrow should be with you Friday.... ;) Got the unit addy around somewhere......

:boogie::boogie::boogie::boogie::boogie:

Well, had a letter this morning from Parcelforce stating that they had a parcel for me awaiting duty payment.......

......so popped down to swansea at lunchtime, and collected it. Turns out the 2nd parcel had been delivered there this morning too..... :boogie:

...bad bit is that I was stung almost ?95 in import charges and handling fees. As they were two seperate packages/deliveries, got charged ?13.50 "parcel force handling fee" on each one. >:(

Soooooo had a quick scan through it all and all looks present and correct. One thing that looks a bit unusual is that the "cog" on the waterpump appears to be smooth, and not......erm... teethed? Is the existing one the same? (edit: just checked some of the earlier engine pics, and the water pump is indeed driven by the back/smooth side of the timing belt, so all is ok... ;) ).

Also picked up the parcel from the local royal mail office - which was indeed the bush set.

So thats the lot - although to round it off nicely, it would be great if the gear cables I bought 2nd hand turned up tomorrow... ;)

Hmm... what you doing tomorrow evening Peeps? ;)

where did you get the gasket set
The poly bush kit
And I see your having the water pump done too (is this just a precaution)

Fizzy
13-07-2006, 23:19
I got the gasket set the same place I got everything (bar the bush set) - "Rock Auto" web shop in the states. The belt & pulley set is Gates brand, but all the rest is Beck/Arnley brand. I did have to pay a bit more for the gasket set than the ones advertised on ebay though.... but its a good quality set (or so I understand :P).

The bush set I got from two 'r us website. Delivered within 2 days of ordering too - top notch service!

As for the oil/water pump - yes, its mainly a precautionary thing. As all the timing stuff is being replaced (and given the mileage of the engine, and the fact that its easy to get to such stuff while the engines out ;) ) thought it would be wise to get the pumps changed to ensure that (all being well) it won't need to come out again/have any engine work for a very, very long time... also gives me the peace of mind knowing its been done. :D

Well, I know I'm rather attached to my car, but thats taking it a bit literally... :icon_eek: :P

Also gives a different meaning to the term "driving the car" too. Don't think a 2LP (leg/limb power ;) ) mr2 will be that good performance wise...

It surely was a long day yesterday, especially for you Ian. Glad you made it back with okay in that poor lil Pug of yours full o' Camry parts.

Yup, it was indeed. For a while my pug had 15 inch alloy wheels with 205/60/15 tyres, large intercooler, unichip and boost module, uprated battery, part leather seats ......which certainly had an effect on the handling and performance.... :driving: :P

Had to do a bit of running around for a seal which was not supllied in the oil pump kit, will remember that one. A bit more bracketry done in the engine bay, just the replacement fan to mount up in there now. Still waiting on spark plugs fingers crossed they arrive tomorrow so we can finishe off the engine...speaking of which...here's a couple more piccies of the stage it's at now.

Well Fizzy I think you'll be pleased with today's swap progress....

Tony finished off the rest of the engine work, new plugs, oil filter, wiring loom, etc) and we fitted the flywheel, clutch and gearbox. (Tony has pics of these - need to get them, will add tomorrow)

Also I made an engine fan mounting plate...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Day16/FanPlate.jpg

..and fitted the Fan.

Now for the good bit...the engine's ready...

...so we slide it in gently...

...and ease it up inch by inch...

Yeah!!! Engines in! Ever closer... ;) :driving:

The state of the gearbox tends to stand out a bit with the cracking clean up job you did on the engine though..... maybe I should have got you to paint that too... :P Ahh well, its hidden away low down in the engine bay, and most likely to get all the dirt off the road first anyway... :wierd2: ;)

As for the engine cover - erm.... I'll try it with the cover on for a bit, and if I prefer it bare I can always take it off later...

Have you changed/drained the gearbox fluid yet? Just wondered if there has been any leak/loss through the drive shaft seal - as I understand thats a weak point on the E153 gearboxes?

Thought I saw a mention on a write-up on here about the modded turbo flywheel catching slightly on a small moulded section on the inside of the gearbox casing - everything look ok with the fidanza flywheel?

Doing a stirling job though guys - coming together nice and quickly now. :praise2:   :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

Great work guy's:praise2:, I'm sure if you'd had the parts this would have been a very quick swap,
It's a shame you can't see more of the engine when it's in the bay, with all that detailing that's been done,
Still that means i don't have to have a uber clean and detailed engine in mine.

Had to do a bit of running around for a seal which was not supllied in the oil pump kit, will remember that one.

It wasn't the crankshaft oil seal by any chance? Strangely enough when I had the oil pump changed on the turbo engine, the garage needed to get hold of one of these because it wasn't included with the pump. It was a genuine toyota part/kit obtained from my local dealer too.

Peebs

Been a while, so I thought I would add my own update.... ;)

Well, Peebs and Tony have been beavering away on my car, and been a bit too busy to post any updates. :D

Basically, wiring is taking a while as typically my wiring colours are different to Peebs' car. (rev1 vs rev 3 uk car with engine transplant with interesting wiring mix.. ;) ) Exhaust has been done, cooling plumbed in, fuel lines done, clutch pipes refitted and bled.

Stuff still to do - finish off wiring, put in coolant and bleed, mt90 oil into the gearbox, induction kit/afm to be fitted....I think thats correct at the time of the last phonecall ;) ...and I'm sure theres a few other things to do.....:D

Peebs also found out the poly bush set I bought won't fit my car, and on checking it appears to be a kit for a rev1 mr2, and not a rev2+ as ordered. He's putting everything back as is now - I'll have to sort that out later. He has fitted the ARB poly bushes though.

Also speaking of poly bushes - due to an issue with alignment, and interference from the gear selector cable support (due to washers being used to space out the n/a cables to work on a turbo gearbox), the front engine mount has begone to tare - so looked into TRD engine mounts, then settled on a set of poly inserts for front and rear engine mounts. Not arrived at the guys garage yet though.... :(

So nearing completion bar a few last fidley bits and testing. Peebs was so busy he put his camera and memory stick "in a safe place", then forgotten where that was - as I tend to do a lot as well. Think he's found them now though so possibly some more pictures soon. :D

Only possible issue that may cause considerable delays is the issue with the speed signal/line... http://twobrutal.co.uk/showthread.php?t=4441

I'm sure the guys will have some good news soon - and hopefully a startup video...? :P

Well, it was probably not required, but as the engine was apart, and the head gasket kit also included new valve stem seals (plus a lot of other bits), I asked them to change them/do the valve work - which also included checking the shims etc too... :D

A lot of the work was mainly precautionary (like the oil and water pump, the valves etc) but thought it would be worth it in the long run on a 197k engine. :D

Righty Ho, all set for today's brutality ? Well here it comes anyways...

New center section all fabbed up...

...then it gets a new lick of paint...
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Zaust/2.jpg

...and gets fitted up to the car.
http://www.peebs.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/FizzysSwap/Zaust/3.jpg
The larger pipe at the rear of the section is taken from the exsiting mongoose system fitted to Fizzy's car. It hangs a little lower than the sump, but is no lower than the subframe, so ground clearance should not be an issue.

The brace bar was offerred up, but as suspected, does not fit, as it fouls on the throttle cable. To correct this, we can either make a new strut brace (or you can have one fitted at a later date, Ian), omitt the brace or re-modify the cable bracket (which "could" be a bad idea considering the angle required to clear the brace) Feedback on this one plis Fizzer.

Well, if you look at the stock bracket on mine, its actually staggered - uses the front topmount bolt on the drivers side, and the rear one of the near side - not sure why?

In theory if it was put in upside down it would sort it - bit unfortunately the ends that fit on the topmounts have been flattened/tappered/shaped so they won't fit flush that way around. :(

So Peebs is going to kindly try his own x-brace in there, and if that also fits in mine (which it should do! :P ) I may be...ahem.. borrowing it for a while. ;)

Well, yesterday saw a bit of bad news crop up. We let the big thumper tickover for, 15-20 mins or so, to bring it up to operating temp Mainly to see if the fans were kicking in correctly and to bake all the new paint on, etc.

But...as it got warmer, the valves got louder...just a bit too much for our liking. :hmm: It doesn't make sense really, as all the clearances were smack in the middle of the tollerance figures :banghead:

Soooo....today we took it apart again...ARRRGH! lol

:fruit: :fruit:

We had a hunt around on t'internet last night and a ring round today to see if we could get hold of the 2 specialized tools that would make our job quicker and easier. The only tool companies (except MrT) that were selling the tools were all in the US. However a local Toyota dealer had some in for the tidy old sum of ?98 + VAT, eeek. :eekdoor:

So we made them instead
...and damn well they work too. Tony modified a pair of SEAT valve tools and I made the bucket holding tool from a piece of 3mm flat. :toke:

Then I went a huntin' for spare shims :odd: and found all 32 I knew I must have. Measured and marked 'em all up (good variety from 2.96mm to 3.17. We already have the current clearances, so that saved time. :hyper:

Got 6 of the valves done today but tomorrow we should fly the rest that is if we have enough of the correct sized shims. And at ?5.50+VAT each, lets keep EVERYTHING crossed, hehe.

I forgot me camera today - twice - DOH! But I shall grab a couple photies of the engine and the tools tomorrow. We'll also post up some info on how to make them for yourselves too...soon. :nerd:

After the engine warms up, in theory, the clearances should tighten a little, so no no clue.

So - were the 6 that have been done so far that much out of tolerance then compared to what they were when it was first put back together? (If you see what I mean... ;) ?)

A couple of them have changed a "thou" up or down, but still all were still within tollerance spec. We are going to set all clearances as close to the upper limit (tightest) as we can get them.

I also now have a fair few more people queuing up for a ride in it... :D So - let me think - charge a quid a go and I should recover my costs in no time. :P

Absolutely fantastic job guys - I was seriously missing my 2 when I was trying to keep up with 5 mr2's on the way up to aber in my lowly 306 1.6... :P Looks like the wait is going to be well worth it, and theres always the next meet. :)

So - when its looking like its gonna be ready for collection then - not that I'm that excited or anything....

:boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie: :boogie:

...yeah right!!! ;)

See you in a few mins then guys..... ;)

...oh, by the way, also found out that the organiser of the meet and her family live about 3 miles away from your garage guys!!! Looks like thats gonna be my first stop on the way back. I've been offered a free meal if I show 'em the two... :D

Hi Guys, Ian's younger bro sticking his oar in again!

Thought i'd congratulate you on the incredibly well done job with this engine swap.

Was wondering though, are flames from the car a good thing? Apart from the fact it looks really cool isn't is possible to damage parts? Or is it just to do with excess fuel in the vapours ignited by the heat of the exhaust?

Not trying to panic anyone honest!! But am curious....

oh and by the way, what sort of cash 'bribe' would i need to provide so you accidenly handed me the keys for MR2?!?!?!

:shades: :shifty: :shifty:

Well, that's it then, just gotta sort out a time for Ian to pick up his two (or younger bro - if the bribe is right - hehe)

Flames from the zaust won't damage anything Colossus. It is due to the excess fuel in the exhaust (most Toyotas run rich) being ignited by the flames produced by the next combustion cycle of the engine. However the flaming may stop happening so frequently when the ECU finds it's "optimal" settings again. (boo - we want flames!!!)

Wicked ..... Flames, cool as.... god you guys are making me want a v6 right now :slap:

Nice work, has anyone timed a 0-60/quarter of a v6 mk2 yet?

:tease: :tease:  From fizzypop had fizzy at my house last night rather exited >>Re flames out of exhaust >> in wales there is ivor the engine and in it live idris the dragon but ivor is redundrant now because it,s all deisel so per haps idris has found a new home in fizzy,s mr2 hence the flames.

I think you went and jinxed things saying this.. ;)

Well - why can cars be tantalizing b**ches at times? :(

Went to pick up the car today. Went for a spin with Peebs around town. Marvelled at the exhaust note, how nice and normal the clutch is now, gearchange is spot on, and its great to drive - can easily pootle around town in 4th and 5th!

Got stuck in traffic, then finally managed to get to a bit of dual carriageway, built up the revs a bit and what a sound!!!!! Awesome!!!!

.....it was at this point that peebs noticed that the temp gauge had just climbed well into the red. 8O

Pulled over asap, and popped the engine lid to find the coolant boiling etc.. [:(

so - a quick check revealed that the front rad fan wasn't working. The cavalry arrived (aka FourVeeSix with my brother in tow ;) ) and after some checking found that there appeared to be a fault with the fan relay. A quick fix later (wire jumper), and I was limping back following FourVeeSix, with the heater on hot, and full blast. On the trip back the temp gauge was wavering all over the place, and fluctuating quite suddenly too - Peebs seems to think it was an air lock.

Some time later, after some food (and allow time for the car to cool down) it looks like theres a problem with the temp sensor on the rad - even though it all seemed to work ok when run up to temp earlier by the guys. As you can imagine we are all rather gutted over this development, and rather puzzled.

So - went back home with my bro, with memories of an excellent car and wonders to come, tantalisingly dangled before me - yet not quite within my grasp. [:(

The guys are going to check a few things and give her a once over again, and let me know how it goes. Its all very odd, as the engine has had a new water pump, thermostat, coolant change and bleed.....thought that the mr2 cooling system was easily up to cooling the V6.

Aren't cars a pain in the butt at times?

Glad you got back ok Ian, and so very disappointed for you that you didnt get to fly home in the Two.
Will organise the two parts tomorrow and let you know asap what we find on the "soak" test.
No need to send "da boys" round just yet tho...:)

Well - I won't be sending "da boys" round just yet - but they will be bringing me round later when I need to pick u the car - they're very handy like that. ;)

Guess I've just got to wait and see how things go again.... need plenty of :booz: to pass the time I think. :D

Hehe, yeah very disappointing all round that was, still, I ordered a new engine coolant pressure cap and a new rad temp sensor from Mr T this morning - although it does come to a quite fierce 78 quid !!! was ?54 for the sensor and ?12 plus a few pennies on each. The parts will be here on friday morn.

Hmm... .I can get a new front radiator for ?99 too..... think its worth getting one considering it looks like the one currently installed is the original? At least that way just about everything cooling related is new.

I also may be able to get a couple of 5ltr containers of toyota forlife for a good price too.... ;)

Fizzy

Well - new rad on way shortly to FourVeeSix, 2nd fan to be fitted to it when it arrives. New engine bay rad cap, new water temp sensor for rad....

....we'll crack this heat issue by sheer overkill if need be.... :P

I'm thinking from this that I may have to uprate my radiator as well, considering it is from the 1990 model 3sge. (not sure if turbo used a bigger one). Is there something easy I can update to. Supra?

Australia is not quite as chilly as where most of you guys are from. :)

2 fans and a new rad. should be good. :)

Uprated rad should not be a problem, Sparky. The 3S-GTE engine runs at 96-98 degrees when hot (tony took a reading off the rad ages ago with one of those cool handheld laser type jobbies) and the 3VZ using the same rad was running at a very low 68-72 if I remeber rightly)

Fizz, fair play for changing the rad matey, though I don't think that that was cause of the problem. I've been away for a few days, so sorry if I missed any mails or call from you.
