don't forget your lucky fridge magnet; Check those rear arches!

Don't believe a word the seller says unless he's got reciepts and photo proof.

Filler used correctly is fine; A light skim here and there. It's when you start discovering entire wheel arches and floor pans made out of the stuff you need to run!

We once cut a floor pan out of a car that was a work of art - The guy must have spent 4 times as long making the thing out of fibreglass and filler than he could of by welding in a new floor pan!

thats nothing
i heard about a guy who pumped expanding builders foam into his sills and rub it down sprayed it over with undr seal and took it for mot pmsl

Wish I'd kept pictures of some of the horrors that I've tested in the past; Had one young lad get quite upset when I told him I wasn't going to bother continue the MOT because his car was literally filler - Sills made from filler, inner arches etc.
He got upset because he'd spent ?90 on filler and 4 weeks doing all the work himself.

Went to see it tonight.

Absoluitely minted. 2 tiny little bubbles on the back arches but defo not fillered up. everyhting is as it should be, gonna pick it up tomoro if i can get thru to the guy on the phone.

Mega chuffed.

Now, where'd i put that angle grinder...?

Superb! The moment you get it, get some Waxoyl/old Engine oil/Rust preventive treat of choice down those arches, and into the sills.

Did you take the skirts off? See any pics of the restoration work?

OlberJ

Haven't taken the skirts off but by the looks of the rest of the work, and the complete lack of rust anywhere to be seen am quite happy to risk it.

Toyota mechanic owned it before this guy, he bought it a month ago cos he couldn't find the right mx-5, has done and is selling this.

Only thing it might well need is a new radiator soon. They expensive?

Hehe, thats funny Jiff. my mate bought a mini like that once. He'd had it a few weeks and was blammin' round the lanes in it and hit a large puddle going quite fast. The passenger footwell gave way with the water's force and soaked his missus, it too was made of fibreglass.

Is there actually a right mx-5 then, I thought they were just all crap, never seen one of the right ones. Although a turbo one is a little more acceptable.

on the subject of bodywork bodges saw a classic in a mini mag back in the day ! As you may or may not know my first automotive 4 wheel loove affair was minis, had a 1275gt and a few pick ups (when they do new pick ups bodies Im first on the list for one, come on heritage pull ya finger out) ! Anyway a big thing with minis was to deseam them, and with 144 square inches of the stuff was a worthwhile job. Anyway we did this to a few miis, cur 6inches of seam off, brind back and weld, grind welds smooth over then move on to next 6 inches, job done easy peasy really !

Anyway read a story about a guy that descided an easy way to do this was with the infamous JB weld, so he starts off, cuts every single seam on the car back and grinds them down flush, goes over every seam with JB weld job done, following day he fills all the seams and smooths them over ! day 3 decides to take it to body shop to spray up his master piece, drives out of his drive over the 3@ kerb onto the road, at which point the mini opens up like a terrys chocolate orange ! virtually every panel came lose on the car and as its the seams where its joined not much was left ! I would have paid good money to watch him driving it out of his drive !

And after a good hour's shakedown, getting lost for the first time in ages, the idle was a little eratic and it stalled twice. So i took it home and i found this :

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/05/19.gif

There was a little water boiling out of here, so it's been epoxy resined for now and am on a hunt for a replacement.

Need to know how to reset the idle tho, anyone?

yes looks very tidy, usually an erratic idle means that the system needs bleeding. once you have replaced the coolant part give it a good bleed!
