pic showing he mounting of the subframe and the gap between the rail and the subframe
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/118.jpg

as you can see a platform needs to be made to acomodate the rear mounting points of the subframe
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/119.jpg
measuremnt between the floor and the bottom of the rail
as you can see it will have to be a small pipe 40mm or smaller as a exhaust

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/120.jpg

thats a zoomed out view of the above picture to help reconition of the measurment

measurement across the enginebay between the 2 bottom arm mounts

measurement of how far the the subframe protrudes into the engine bay

if someone can take the same pictures of the stock mountings as a comparason
that would be much apreciated
BTW mesurements are required

thanks

excellent pics wayne, but isnt the mk2 suspension arm mounting point on the left side still hitting the diff? still looks to be in the way where it is?

I'll take some pics soon of a stock empty bay with measurements and add them here.

the measurement as to how far it protudes into the enginebay will be the desider there
if its still the same distance then i have the option to move it back a little ..somthing that would be dificult and still retain strength on the mk1 triangle

im off to measure another one tonight as well :D

ok stock protrudes 110

and width is 660

modded protrudes 80

and width is 680
measuring the outer bolt hec to bolt hex on both measurements

so basically ive gained 20mm trackand lost 30mm of potrusion

ill put the v8 and transaxel back in tomorrow night and see if we have a winner

it sounds like its enough
im gettign excited this could mean its done withn the next month :D

sounds interesting wayne,so the mk2 xmember gives less intrusion into the bay around the diff area.

Is the rotation of the gearbox on the engine basically the same as it would be in a mk2? or diff slightly tilted up to help clear? i was looking at mine today and thought if it was tilted up enough it might clear but that lifts the driveshaft angle up too,so probably a crap idea.

wayne
27-04-2006, 07:32
yeah nah you dont wanna be tilting teh gearbox
remeber it has a oilpum and gravity based returns in it
you dont wanna be upseting that mate
i cant go any higher
basically as it is my crank exits under teh right hand rail
i have no room to put a pully on it whatsoever without chopping th right hand rail and to get teh oem one in there id need to remove teh rail and substatute a arch in there

you also must remeber that the driveshaft goes under teh rail as well
if you raise teh gearbox any hiiger than stock you will need to notch teh rails to allow for full suspention movement withou touching teh rail

my main reasin for teh mk2 subfram is its not harn to move back more if it is needed
ill just make custom bottom arms to compensate for the added angle :D
ive started making teh rear platforms and one ive got the engine back in there again and finalised the positon ill email you teh dxf pattern for them

honestly paul im quite excited about this and i really do think this is teh best way
its gunna add a pile of regidity to the rear of the car

to use teh original reay triangles you backially have to cop right at the nut and fillet it straigh back into the mount
there is just nothing left in teh way of support and because of teh way they mount you cant really move them as there molded to teh rail shape

remember technically the s/c mr2 manuel box is a mk2 turbo box with a 3s bell on it

thanks wayne, yeah i bet you are dead excited now, getting closer by the day by the sounds of things.

I plan to arch up the right side chassis rail so that the machined down crank pulley sits under it,ive no clue as yet how the alternator will mount up in relation to that...i had a daft notion about somehow driving the alternator straight off the flywheel and mounting it in the V where the 1uz starter used to go....directly meshed with a cog into the ring gear. That way the crank pulley can be ditched for good and no major rail mods, what do you reckon? Im a bit worried about directly driving something off the fly though, wouldnt that be noisy too?

Also ive thought, mount a pulley on one of the cam pulleys and drive the alternator that way, again all just wild ideas and guess work at the moment....im not sure putting an extra load onto the timing belt is necessarily a good idea either.

So basically using the mk2 xmember you can stick it further back but then it may need custom bottom arms to throw the wheel position forward again....this project gets deeper by the day, good fun though!

wayne
27-04-2006, 19:34
yeah noise woudl be a issue there
and bcaue youv e just spaced the fly out youve nolonger got a drive fo it
basically ive desided to mount the hydrolyic fan drive to teh snout of the crank or make a tiny pully to go on there and mount teh drive below teh rail as well
that way i can drive my alternator remotely with teh fan drive system

ive also considered teh cam pullys but yeah the 15 odd hp on teh poor belt might be a bit much

alright last day of work till i can work on the car :D
yay
BTW its 6:30 am here

sorry wayne ive no idea what a hydraulic fan drive is? that might be called something else here.

sorry wayne ive no idea what a hydraulic fan drive is? that might be called something else here.

Doesn't the Camry use one of those? I certainly remember a fan with a pair of oil lines running to it but no belt...

Owen.

wayne
28-04-2006, 07:59
yeap
some of teh 1uz's also come with them

so instead of running teh fan.... you use it to run a alternator

obviiously a little valving would br required
but nothing dificult :D

yepo hydraulic fans are either driven by coolant flow or oil flow

Paul Woods
28-04-2006, 17:53
ah right, that makes sense...i wondered what that hydraulic pipe work was on the camry fan....cool,so looks like i will be on the hunt for one of those, quite annoyed as ive binned loads of those!

Jiff Lemon
28-04-2006, 18:04
and I binned mine yesterday otherwise I'd have sent it up :(

Got my MK2 sub-frame installed. Had to modify it a bit to clear the GM transaxle

jesus bill you werent joking when you said it was tight...this is why ive took the big step to go widebody and space out the chassis rails/suspension hangers. You're making good progress though! have you heard of our inhouse madman "podge" ? building an INLINE 1uz-fe mk1 on an audi trans...nuts! but its all good.Damn id better get a move on.

Bill Strong

ya, I thought I was going to have more room. I stood there looking at the trans, the engine hitting the firewall, and the subframe not fitting back in. I was pissed, but not surprised. Grabbed two beers, downed them, put on the face shield and took out a stack of 4.5" grinding wheels and started hacking up the frame.

Now I have to figure out a way to make some engine mounts that dont move.

Paul Woods

a couple of bags of poly and you're good to go fella

nice bill real nice mate be good to see this one on the road should be dummy fitting mine soon

28-11-2006, 01:19
A stealth project podge. How much space have you got around the engine to fit it there north/south?

I'm worried about my own personal sanity of doing the math of putting one in a mk2 :)

Bill Strong
28-11-2006, 05:02
math?

podge
29-11-2006, 00:17
plenty of space around it just not behind or infront when i trial fit ill get some photos up just no point at the mo as its just an engine conected to a gearbox

Bill Strong
12-12-2006, 13:21
okay, hard to see in these images, but I sorted out the strut clearance issues, and finished the subframe welding.
Got 3 mounts done, just need to finish the front mount.
http://www.v8mr2.com/page116.asp
http://www.v8mr2.com/page117.asp

ended up drilling a 2" hole in the reinforcement for the lower control arm that I welded in. Arm fits perfect and the mount is still strong as hell.
tranny is not even close to touching the frame. The engine is now hanging from the mounts with no support from the bottom

I'd love to hear about how you did the five stud conversion.

Never mind I just saw your thread on this. Thanks a lot for the info.

I love the way you guys are mad like this:freak3:

How will the Subfram effect the handling of the AW11? Will it make it better or worse?
One day ill have the balls/skills/money to attemp domething like thisrotflmao
