now thats pretty amazing....some work has gone into that, you are going to fit right in here!

Was there much work involved fitting the mk2 crossmember onto the aw11? I ask because its something i may have to do with my v8 swap.

Hats off to you for a superb mk1 though,10/10.

Many praises AEK, that is pretty impresive work there. All those MK2 bit must have took quite some working out and time to get fitted. Excelent job mate, looks fantastic.

How does the car handle with the MK2 suspension AEK ?

Note to PsychomIKE - That engine looks suspiciously like my MK2 Rev1 engine I just removed, no it cant be...wait, i'll just go check my garage....

Thanks for the positive feedbacks. The engine and el. swap was not the most dificult, but get the sw20 steering knuckle work with the aw11 steering...I used some time to make it work. This is a n\a engine with 156hp.
I used 2,5mm steelplate, cut them to make a new frame because I moved the engine 5cm longer towards the backtrunk. This because I wanted too use the mount for the gearbox that its on the sw20 crossmember.

can i ask how you managed to sort the front hubs out? the sw20 has the steering arm on the front of the hub,not on the rear like a mk1? Also switching the hubs over left to right doesnt work either as it messes up the ackerman angles, how did you get around this? blown away by the workmanship here.

Bill Strong
08-04-2006, 15:25
oh my god! <-- girly scream...

awesome!

and what timing :)

So yes, like Paul said. I am most interested now into how you got the front suspension sorted out. As you probably know I am building the V8 MR2 Toystar. I need to make the SW20 stuff work up front and would love to know how you did it.

I am also using the SW20 rear sub-frame in the rear to clear the transaxle.

Paul Woods
08-04-2006, 15:38
bill have you noticed the mk2 subframe isnt altered? so how do the rear hubs maintain the right camber angle given that the mk1 strut tops are an inch closer to the centre of the car each side than on a mk2?

Bill Strong
08-04-2006, 19:03
ya, saw that. I was looking closely and noticed that the firewall for the trunk is actually a MK2 firewall. Two images are making my brain think. One shows a subframe that looks hand built, then another looks like it is a MK2 that has been grafted to the mk1 chassis. neat. But yes the stut angle does perplex me. The rear MK2 strut is at a 90 degree angle, or very close to it. The Mk1 is at a higher angle, mainly due to is being a FWD corolla part. Maybe when mounted to the MK 1 the angle is corrected.
At first I thought that maybe he even used the MK2 strut tower, but that one in the pictures is a MK1.
He has lowered the car, so the camber can be done via the hub itself by elonging the holes for the strut mount. This can also be done using camber plates on the strut tops. It is also easy to redrill the strut tops to get a better angle. I did this on the Toystar.
I'll probaby do this on the Toystar II. I really like this.

Bill Strong
08-04-2006, 19:06
did you install a roll cage as well? I see what look like chassis reinforcements coming from the front of the strut tower to the interior firewall.

Paul Woods
08-04-2006, 19:11
i agree, its got great potential, especially when your diff hits the mk1 triangle!! its a definate option for me too, although ive still got to fit a mk1 stub into a mk2 carrier afterwards.

Have you also noticed there doesnt seem to be any altering to the front tie rod mounts, from what i can see they look stock.

AEK the more information you can give us the better on this superb mod please mate,it truly is one of the best we have ever seen. Can you go into detail about it? which struts you used? springs etc?

Hi again...I am glad you guys lik my car.
This swap was never ment too be, but I had a inported sw20 that I planed to pay the tax etc to get plates on it...but on a trackday I met a guy called Amund who had made the first 1.5 swap here in Norway and I fell in love with this brutal car he had:hehe: So a aw11 was bougth in...
I use the sw20 firewall over the homemade chassi reinforcement so it will look factory made and I can use the holes that are made for coil, ecu, etc.
I use the sw20 whell alignment, so the length between rear spring support holes on my aw11 its 100.6cm and on the sw20 body its 100cm.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/39.jpg
As seen on the picture I use the sw20 suspension support with bump stop removed and ekstended 5cm. I also use the sw20 shock absorber with chopped sw20 spring. (I will soon swap for home made coilovers that uses the damper and absorber) I also use sw20 koni adjustebal dampers. Sw20 stablizer. Also use the sw20 rear axel carrier. So the rear are almost sw20 wheel aligment. I have lovered the car about 6cm.
In front I use the sw20 lower arm, shock absorber, koni adjustebal damper, stablizer link, steering knucle and axel...but welded on the cup that holds the spring from the aw11. The spring seat are from aw11, but a littlebit modified and the lower spring are from aw11. The length betweene the front suspension brace are on the sw20- 112cm and on the aw11- 106cm. I made my car fit the sw20 alignment by..see picture. The length betweene where the lower arm are attached to the body its on sw20- 70.5cm and on the aw11 70cm, so the wheel alignment are the same on my car as its on the sw20.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/40.jpg
For my steering I had big problem, the reason was that the sw20 steering rack were in front and not in back as on the aw11. I turned the axel and conectet the tie rod end. The car drove side to side when going stright forward. The solution was cut a pice off the aw11 steering knucle, bolt it and weld it on the sw20 steering knuckle. I dont know if this is the rigth way, but it works for me. I also use the sw20 steering column.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/41.jpg
I finish the swap last year, so there were no big problem...just the engine coolant on trackdays. It helped me to turn the radiator because I conected the pipes like on the 4age. This is my second engine due too overheating so there is a big hole in the hood now..
Trackdays..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/43.jpg
The tube that comes from front suspension support are welded to the sw20 bracket that holds the dashboard...and you can see the sw20 steering collum.

Thanks again...I like to make things my way:hmm: The handelings have improved, the stablizer and shocks are much stiffer. Also the handemade fram in back and in front make my car stiffer.( My mate with mk2 rev3 turbo engine have problem hanging on in corners:) ) My lap around the track have shortned in time from standar 4age. I have 475 kilo on front axel, 654 kilo on the back axel. So the weigth are now 42\58 % (45\55% original). As you can see I need more power, but my car are only hobby so things take time....
The sw20 stablizer right, aw11 left...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/45.jpg
Koni shock, aw11 in front, sw20 back..
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/46.jpg
To make the steering work I cut off the arm that holds the steering rod on the aw11 (A) and bolt it on + weld it to the sw20 arm (B)..
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/47.jpg
Ill try to explain how I made that solution. I found that the difference aw11 - sw20 was: A- sw20. 0,5 cm longer out than aw11. B- aw11. 6cm longer up than sw20. C- aw11. 8,5 cm longer from the disck than sw20. With the aw11 arm welded to the sw20 steering knuckle the geometry is not exactly like the original aw11 steering knuckle but prety close....or in other words the only way I could think about.

The reason for the big holes are cooling the radiator....

Hi again...here its a update on my car after I neded a brake from it. I have only spray it with filler\primer because I had to be ready for a track-weekend on Artic Racing Cirkel here in Norway.
After testing it on track I found out that the best investment was the Toyo R-888 racing slicks (225\45-16) and now i have no problem with over-heating the engine:thumbsup:
And again, I am glad you guys like my work on the car, because I am only a construction worker that have this car for a hobby, and not for licens racing...

Its always nice to post pictures here and read about people with the same ideas in tuning mk1:cool:
I live 50km west from Oslo.....
Yes, this its the first time I have made bodyparts in fiberglass, but have made som subwoofer-boxes before.
My future plans its to lower the sideskirts so they make the same line as frontbumper....with vent that cool down the rear brakes...and a diffusor in the rear...and pips out behind the rear wheel....in the future.
If you lik I can take some picture of the bonnet vent and fan in front...(but I have som scratches after a spin in 160km\h on the track and out in the field)
Here its a picture of the modification I had to do on the frontshock absorber because my wheel woldent spin...(225\45-16. et40)

Adahm: I use the sw20 front shockabsorber and aw11 lower springsupport welded on it...so on original aw11 front I think there wil be no problem because the shock absorber are longer from the axel than the aw11 and on sw20 the spring support have a different shape that clear the wheels on mk2.

Marksman
17-06-2006, 23:25
Half of me wants that car to be a one off in a class of it's own. The other half wants you to copy it into a kit and make yourself lots of money! Can't wait to see it with the extended matching sideskirts.

Just a very small thing, given the custom brake vents in the front wings I think the MK1b side vent might follow the lines more.

Splendid work and a pleasure to have you here.

All the best,

Owen.

The bonnet looks very nice good, have you done any sort of seal to stop rain/water from getting into the frunk? I'm trying to do that on mine at the moment and it's a pain in the ass :)

Update from Norway:
Finally I desided what engine I wanted in my car, and the winner was the 3vz-fe. I will use Megasquirt2, Fidenza alu. flywheel, Ford Edis-6 ignition, s54gearbox, fuelcell in frunk, exhaust pipes will run where the fueltank was before and out behind the front tires. I have started on my fenders, made a mould and make them in glassfiber...but I have a long way to go. I have started with the vent on the left side, but desided to make a new innerfender insted of boxing in the hole....here are some pictures that tell more than my bad english lol
New engine 3vzfe and Megasquirt2...

I have now started with the cooling pips, fuel lines that are mounted in top of the tunel with a heat shield between the exhaust and cooling pipes...

AEK, I'd just like to say that is inspirational work  It's pioneering work like yours that inspires the rest of us to have a go...

One reservation I have on your layout if I may? As you've moved the fuel cell forward do you expect the balance of the car to change as the cell empties?

All the best,

Owen.

The exhaust pips will come out behind the front wheel.
I hope the weight change on the front when the fuel empties (19liters) dont make that big influence on the handling, but I realy dont know...maybe it will handel like a Lamborghini miura;)

I have done some work on my car this weekend...Finish the cooling-pipes, fuel lines, isolating the fuel lines and one cooling pipe (there was no more rom), made a aluminium plate to cover the pipes and finish the exhaust. One thing I dont like is that I could not make the pipes the same lenght before I conect them...now tomorrow I lift the car down on the ground and start with the electric...
The coolig pipes, brake pipe, vacum pipe, clutch pipe, speedo-wire, throtel-wire, total 11 pieces.

Just read the whole thread - this guy is Asbolutely awesome!

Was speaking to a mate last night who had just returned from Sweden (he has a 1972 Mustang V8 and was going to a mahoosive american muscle car show) and said that the mk1 would love the roads going to Norway...

Perhaps we should organise a TB Eurotrip? ;)

Anything custom to make the mk2 dash fit in your mk1? Direct swap, or what all was needed to make fit?

Thanks for the support, because my ideas are not "follwing the trends" in car tuning. The car have been on the road for 2,5months now (+ 2 track days)and the car have been working great. I have also had the car on weight: Front 500kg. Back 690kg. Total 1190kg. 190kg more than standar mk1, but its 40kg lighter than the 3sge version (in my mk1.) The sound of the 2 pipes are worth all the time in the garage lol. The mk2 interior are not a direct swap, its wider and it dont fit to the front window...I have a lot of work left to make it fit.
