well after many months of wanting and drooling over various mk3's becky finally has her car! A 2000 MR-S import, red leather interior,17" alloys, air con,ABS,PS etc.Bought via ebay, well outside of it!

Its a surprisingly nice drive if a little wind noisy, doesnt compare to the go kart feel of the mk1 of course but nice all the same.

So there we are! TB has its first mk3.

Can't see the piccys as photo bucket doesn't want to work for me :(

Got any plans for it, or is it being kept as standard? You not tempted by a turbo kit :shades: :shades: :shades:

we discussed the possibility of a 3s-gte going in the back in a few years and the stock engine begins to tire, beckys all for some 3s grunt in it! So it'll definately happen in the future, pointless chucking a turbo onto that unit,3s it has to be!

I dont know a lot about the 1.8 vvti unit thats in,certainly pokey enough, just lacks the mk1 feel for me out on the road.

yeah row if i had my way id bang a veilside fortune kit on there and some deep dish azevs!

dont these engines suffer some major problems at some point ? not knocking them just something I read about them a while back. Personally the MK3 is growing on me, never hated them just thought they werent as inspired as the MK1 tis all ! Shame porsche had to steal design ques from it though ! Just as a though Paul wouldnt this engine be more suited to a supercharger rather than a turbo as it would work really well with the VVTI system me thinks !

26-03-2006, 19:06
Do they do a specfic bolt-on turbo unit for the mk3 then? Wonder what it would pack out!!

Paul Woods
26-03-2006, 19:11
dont these engines suffer some major problems at some point

Heres hoping sam!!! :) any excuse to whap a 3s-gte in there and im on it.

To be honest i wouldnt bother bolting a turbo or sc onto this engine,if it ever plays up its coming out by the scruff of its neck.

Ben F off imoc is running a turbo kit i think its power enterprises. Its quite a common mod on ROC. Ben's mk3 is running circa 300bhp, its awesome as I had some passenger laps at anglesey :driving:

26-03-2006, 19:16
im racking my brains trying to remeber what it was, think it was a certain year, was something like the block cracking or something, a, sure it was something quite major and happened around the 60k mark ! having never driven either the MRS or the slika with the VVTI engine its alwys made me wonder what theyre like as must be quite rapid even if not tubby rapid !

Paul Woods
26-03-2006, 19:16
really? (ears prick up) 300bhp you say? mmmmm!

Goldy
26-03-2006, 19:21
see bottom of http://www.whifbitz.co.uk/mr2-turbo.html <<

Tho you could probably make your own pretty easily i'm sure. If you can build a mk1 v8 u can do anything :hehe:

I'll see if I can find a bit more on bens mk3... Probably worth having a look on the roc website as i've seen 2 or 3 turbo'd ones from there.

I've had a little look and I think he's running the power enterprise kit @ 7psi, and getting around 230bhp at the wheels, tho it might be more now as I think he's running a chargecooler.......

Go on paul you know you want to :hidesbehi

Hey Paul, nice motor!

From what I understood from the little bit of reading I did the only problem with these engines was something to do with the pre-cat failing internally (what ever that is) and basically causing excess carbon build up in the engine, causing failure... I'm not even sure this is a problem on UK models as i only read about it on US forums and what with their different emission laws...

My Mum owns a mk3 though and i can say, ignore the naysayers... it's a bloody fantastic chassis. The thing just corners like it's on rails, faster than my Koni'd mk1 can, and I haven't had the guts to find it's true limits yet! I'll always be a mk1 guy, but the mk3 is a welcome change when i get the rare opportunity to drive one... no time for those mk2 whales :P

Scrap the plasticy interior, remove the ABS and fit a custom 3sgze... that would be imense :D

From what I remember they used the engine from these for the vauxhall VX220 turbo!

so they should be able to kick out some chunk of power!

its the lotus elise 111r that uses the 1.8 vvti lump, non turboed

the vx220 uses a 2.0 turbo ecotec engine built by vauxhall also used in the astra coupe turbo

all comments welcome chaps, shes dead chuffed with it,i'll grab some engine bay pics soon.... cheers for the heads up on engine faults, ive also heard they eat power steering pumps too.

This will get a bigger engine one day,at the moment 3s-gte is the obvious choice, got to say i was blown away by the mr-s handling, very slick....i bet they bite your bum on wet roads though.

27-03-2006, 09:59
paul, how about a 2zz-ge (zzt231 celica engine). Common upgrade for those, they make 190hp while still weighing less than a 4age and they rev to about 8,500rpm :D
they can then be turboed, often with great success and much power :)

anyway its a nice car, I quite like the mk3 but it needs a hardtop! :)

Well I'm glad you all like my new car, I get it tomorrow after sorting insurance and stuff out, it's fab! I love the colour and the interior is gorgeous!

Paul Woods
27-03-2006, 17:46
thats not a bad idea mal...i think the 2zz is a stonking engine, isnt it OBDII though? might be a mare trying to power one of those ecu's up?

there's a forum, spyderchat or something, they should have all the answers about the wiring - but yeah I bet it is a bastard!

Paul, is it possible to see (without doing any damage!) if the gear cable connectors at the shift lever end are the same as the Mk1 ones, and if the cables themselves are the same length or longer than the mk1 ones?

I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this! :)

very nice, been looking around for one myself, I have a serious question are you gonna gut the precats?

would be grateful for your serious opinion regarding the breakdown of precat material clogging the main cat and being sucked back into the engine via the EGR sys wrecking the bores ; think thats what superchrged sam is referring to.there is a mrs site which has a big section on engine problems related to precats and their demise taking the engine with it. I know you are a respected authority on the mr2 and well deserved too have you heard of this?

superchargedsam
29-03-2006, 16:21
yup this was it as it was definatly to do with the bores being damaged and more relaistic than cracking I thought it could have been, from what i rmeber it wsnt even after high milage !

re pre cat and engine failure.

on the positive side someone mentioned sale of goods act and a 5 year rule so toyota should replace under warranty & post 2003 have hardened rings (UK).

Paul Woods
29-03-2006, 19:58
no all comments welcome,to be honest im a mk3 newbie, learning as i go on this one...done the odd job on some at the garage but owning one day to day is a different matter.I will have to look into this precat disintegration problem, dont like the sound of that at all! Time to block up the EGR tube for the whole year except MOT time methinks! I wonder if thats do able? if it means saving the engine from certain doom that is.

More research needed......by the way drove it home tonight and those mr-s's handle like on the proverbial rails, much more point n squirt than the mk1 which has surprised me a lot,a little lacking in poke/doesnt seem to rev as freely but a damn nice drive all the same.

Paul Woods
29-03-2006, 20:03
just had a read up.....seems its easy enough to gut the precat, job done,no more worries.

Paul Woods

right, becky and i have taken the decision to stick a rev3 turbo motor into this car in the summer,so that will pave the way for future mk3 turbos at woodsport as well.... should be a stonking ride.

400BHP MK3 Turbo Monster and don't forget a brake upgrade.
as you already have a V6 in the pipeline.

I think a new pair of std discs and some carbotech pads will sort that. Should be proper bo.

Can't wait to see this.

So far the cars I want to drive are:

1) Mine - hardly driven it!
2) Lodge's Mk1 BEAMS
3) Adam's Mk1.5
4) Becky's MRS Turbo

I promise to fight my natural instincts and give them all back :)

Can't help thinking that the MRS engine and box will be finding its way into a Mk1 as well, thus paving the way for even more work!

Should be a fun swap to watch - In time for JAE?

Is it worth transplantng the 140bhp engine to the Mk1?

Jiff Lemon
19-02-2007, 15:25
They seem to do in the states so I can't see why not.

plus gives you the option of the 6 speed box. It's not always about big numbers and impressive spec sheets you know.... ;)

biteme
19-02-2007, 16:40
lol touché

I forgot about the 6spd option!

Paul Woods
19-02-2007, 18:18
ah no,the 1zz is a piss weak piece of shite ,that wont be going anywhere near a mk1,jiff are you sure you dont mean the 2zz celica engine? now thats worthy of going into a mk1 for sure! i truly believe beckys mr-s is slower than a stock mk1 at the moment, the 1zz is crud!

As for brake upgrades, the bolt pattern on a mk3 seems to be identical to mk1 front and rear,so that'll be st205's up front and the woodsport welded calipers of death on the rear please!

Thanks Em, I can't wait for his lordship to get started on the conversion.
I was practically begging him for before xmas, but it was a 'no, no'. But Mr Woods has seen the light, and wow I'm going to be a MK3 Turbo owner. He says the summer, so watch this space.
It is so gutless at the moment, that's my only criticism. By the way I couldn't get a quote with Shiela's Wheels they don't insure imported cars, my insurance is sky high now, let alone a turbo being put in!!! Ah well I will hopefully have another promotion at work to pay or use the bank of paul!!!
