View Full Version : V8 Specific? Yeah- Here's A FORD and a Chrysler V8 in one Vehicle. HEMI #4 Build

Ok, it's a bit complex this story of how I ended up with this stuff. Follow along, I'll try to be brief.

Sure- it seems like all the other builds. BUT- this one is different. My buddies dealership had a repo on a Durango. Yeah, you know- a repossession of a truck. Someone couldn't or wouldn't make the payments, so they came and repossessed it, or took it back. After the legal jump rope, he said we could use it as a donor vehicle, it didn't run. It was the good Durango- Hemi powered.
Whatever happened to Hemi #3? The one I just finished?

He sold it to the same guy that owns Hemi #2, in Louisiana, USA. Now dig this:

The guy that bought Hemi #2, wanted another one so he and his wife could have a matching pair of AWD Hemi Internationals. He came back to Ohio to buy Hemi #3. My buddy also made a deal for his 1946 GMC 6 cylinder, manual transmission patina rusty truck, plus the complete body from a near perfect 1953 International truck. (this Hemi #2 guy was going to have me build it for him, but this deal came through and he jumped on board. Everyone wins.)

Long story short- I have a Hemi Durango AND THE BEST 1953 International R-110 I have seen to date.

I'll let the pictures do the talking from here, but I am starting with a video because it covers SO much more at the beginning of a thread. Enjoy, comment, share, like subscribe- whatever. (Jeez, I sound like a tv commercial, except most TV commercials aren't typing on a PC at 12:30pm, after at least 6 beers)
Anyway- Here, enjoy :)

We pulled the Shelby GT Cobra engine & trans out of the back of the purple Durango- (we’ll cut that up later) to have a better look at it.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2016/11/1.jpg

This is a 2007 Shelby GT V8, it’s a 4.6L mod motor from Ford. It makes about 350BHP, but it is LIGHT. It doesn’t feel like any HEMI V8 that I’ve been carting around, that’s for sure. A very light, balanced package with multiple ways to upgrade it for looks and power. Nice.

Once I separated the engine from the 5 speed gearbox, and knowing this was removed from a wrecked vehicle, I noticed something strange about the input shaft of the gearbox. It had some shiny metal spots, the hydraulic throwout bearing was leaking, and slightly off center. This was odd for a supposed low mile motor. I dug a little deeper:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2016/11/2.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2016/11/3.jpg
It appears what happened was- during the crash, something struck the rear end so hard that it pushed the driveshaft towards the engine with such force that it slammed whatever endplay was built into the trans, so hard, that it broke itself out of the case at the clutch side! Crazy, in 30 years of working on stuff, I’d never seen that before.

The engine, is on the stand and I’ll get the wiring harness ready and do some “Show car” stuff to it, in between the Hemi #4 build and finishing this Subaru.

This HEMI #4 might get a utilitarian style, we may go with an aviation theme, bomber seats etc- Not sure. Scooby first! The engine arrived today and while the GT engine would look sick SICK in the Scooby, I'd be wasting 2 good things chopping that up to fit.
More later :) :) :)

Subaru WRX engine arrived.

Long day at work, but then came home to an engine sat on a pallet. Hooray! I started on it right away but could only work on it until about 8pm, I started to fizzle out. I'm off to work today, but I'll get back on it when I get home. I need a fresh brain to get this right, since I've never touched a turbo motor in my life. Should be fine...

Just kidding! I normally don't start work until after 9 am. That helps enormously. Today it's 11:05 pm and I just came in from the garage. BUT-
My work day for tomorrow consists of "drive to building, pick up check and drive home". The Scooby engine is going to RUN tomorrow. Unless they call me for some bullshit ;)

I did a LONG 14 hrs in the garage the other day, only to fire up the Subaru and.... nothing. Wouldn't start. The next day, most of another day spent reading and fiddling (fiddle fuckin') around and finally got it sorted.

Runs great. I can start cutting up HEMI #4 soon :)

I'll drive it around and see if I can tell which bearing it is, or if it's the rear diff. Chassis has 174k on it, it's a cool car. Better than the Pontisuck Asscrack erm- I mean Pontiac Aztek...

Grenade

I know where to find the twisties, but they're hours away. I hear the hot setup is to put Subaru Forrester struts on all 4 corners and bigger off road tires. Then it'll be a little truck! :) I'm doing a header on it today.

Scooby turned out great, still have the wheel bearings to replace, but someone is interested in buying it, so that can sit in the driveway for now.

I was able to get a bit of help from the neighbor, he's helping me take down the Hemi#4 donor truck. We got a lot done on it in a few short hours. Hoping to get the rest of it done today.

This neighbor is the son of an older couple that live next door. This kid is 30, no job, many problems, etc etc. The parents let him do whatever. He offered to help (and has, many times) but I don't need someone that is usually drunk by 10am... Over the past few months I've tried to help the kid, I told him, I can use a hand for a day here and a day there, but you can't be drinking if you're over here working. He agreed and didn't drink during the 2 days that he helped me strip the truck. He's not a bad guy, just a bit daft and never had any real leadership I suppose. He followed directions and we got the truck 100% torn down, cleaned up and loaded the scrapper's truck in 10hrs. A savings for me of about 8 hrs and a lot of struggle.

And truth be told, it's us that want the fence lol We are discussing a move to a place closer to our car buddies shop and somewhere with a BIG garage. I mean 30x30 or bigger...

I've been receiving pics from the owners of Hemi #2 and #3. They have been taking the trucks on the roads all over the southern states. It seems these things are a big hit with the car crowd. I couldn't be happier about it. I'll tell you, I thought that once I sold any one of these things that I'd never hear from them again, but as it turns out, the owners are in the regular rotation of texts and phone calls, really great people.

It's cool to see how the trucks are used and it helps me build all future trucks in such a way that they're easier to live with while you drive them. I'm also focusing in on real reliability and longevity of usability with these things. Once they leave my garage, they're expected to run trouble free for years. That plays a factor in the way I build them, that's for sure.

I'm working a deal for another driver at the moment, we shall see if this truck I'm looking at is as good as they say it is. They are driving it to me, from an hour away.

Me too never buy a car unless the engine is cold when you get there especially a diesel

Grenade
22-11-2016, 20:11
I used to do that. Back in the day, I was the most skeptical buyer and I red flagged everything. Never buy a warm engine, I know, I know. Smell the oil & trans fluid- check the oil filler cap for signs of water, blah blah blah hehe
Now I listen to it run, smell a bit of exhaust and let the vehicle tell me what it needs.

When you're dealing with such small amounts of money, it's not that big of a deal. Sure, you run the risk of getting burned by someone, but I spend enough time asking all the right questions and judging character before I ever see the vehicle in person.
I made this deal sweeter when it arrived because of an exhaust leak on the manifold. I said that it was most likely broken bolts in the head, because that's really common on these. Found a little wet spot on the radiator too. Dropped the price 300 bucks when it got here.
As it turns out, the exhaust manifold bolts were fine, it was just a leaking fitting on the EGR tube. I welded it up and BAM! Silent and strong as an ox. It's fine, I could flip it for $$ but nah- I'm going to use it as a winter truck. You'll see a blowing snow four wheel drift video in this winter!

I've ordered a brake master cylinder for 28 bucks shipped because the pedal is soft, no big deal there and I'm not sure if I'll swap the radiator (85 bucks shipped) or just put some alumaseal in it. Stuff works great on small leaks.

Yesterday I got it to drop into position. Today I'm going to hopefully get it partially welded into the floor, so I can pull the truck out and get a look at it.

It's so cool when these things start to take shape.

The cab is tacked into position. It runs. I'll have it together and apart five or six more times though.
Needs the cam installed in the engine, new pushrods and valve springs, headers and some other stuff that I have sitting in boxes.

I'll pull it out in the morning to take some shots in the daylight, and maybe a video, depends on if work calls me.
I've been getting those "Hey go see what this job needs" or "Can you go help those idiots finish that" type of calls lately. It's winter, nobody wants to work outside, so I went and showed 'em how it's done. 3" water main leak fixed down inside a manhole, home by noon. All muddy and wet, but home by noon. Two or three guys standing around looking at it, deciding how to handle it. Hourly workers. ;)
That was Saturday.

So today- I put in about 9-10 hours solid in the garage with the doors mostly open and the heat only fired up to take the chill out of the air. Welding and grinding smoke inside a small space isn't very good, so I kept opening the doors to clear the air, leaving the heat off after only a few minutes.

Thanks guys. Rough few days here. Great present, we love the new GoPro.

Today my ford F150 developed a random, unable to reproduce it stalling problem. Had it towed home on a flatbed, sharing life stories with the lorry driver.
Damn thing runs and drives fine, but it will just hesitate and stall, like you've shut off the fuel pump. Randomly.

Of course getting out of it when it stalled on the road, I slipped and fell on the ice, right on my back. Of course, right?

I checked fuel pressure, it's on the low end of the spectrum but it is within spec. After reading online about the 4.6L F150- there could be about 10 different things that cause this random run great suddenly stall condition.
So I bought the fuel pump and I'll install it in the morning. My son Coty and his buddy are off on Christmas vacation so they'll help me drop the tank, outside in the freezing @#$$%%%^( cold. And yes- it's half full of petrol.

At work today, my boss was really helpful and during the holidays, that's really cool. A great guy for sure. I'll be keeping that job, that's for sure.

As far as the Power Wagon- that deal fell apart. We got the card refunded and the bank transfer reversed so we lost nothing but 35 quid. There will be another one of those in the future.

Right now, I've gotta finish this truck so I can get some real money in hand. That will solve all kinds of things. The Ford F150, is starting to pissMeoff :)

More updates on the Hemi #4 as they develop.

The fuel tank was heavy but it only took about 2.5hrs to complete. The boys helped me get it up on the jack once under the truck so I could hoist it into position. Because it's a tall truck, I didn't have to raise the vehicle at all, just slide under and do up the bolts, hoses/lines and wires.

The filler neck is always a pain but honestly- it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I did however, drop the little brass fuel gauge fitting adapter down into the "V" of the engine when I was all finished. I wanted to compare pressure from the old to the new and it rolled out of my cold fat fingers down into to a spot that you couldn't see.

I grabbed my retriever tool that I call "spring loaded, long grabby thing" and fished around hoping to get lucky. "Psshh, next to impossible" I thought. I took a few shots in the dark, literally and even something this trivial made me really happy- I snagged it and pulled it out! Totally blind luck. I was able to test the pressure, (marked improvement but close to the original numbers) and drive the truck. It seems fine, but time will tell if that was it or not. I hope so because I'm supposed to do a bit of travel in it this weekend.

I came in the house and had lunch, took a nap. Working on the frozen ground makes you sleepy. I'll get back to Hemi #4 tomorrow. Stop reading this drivel and go have a beer! It's the holidays.

This is the first HEMI truck I've done with headers and it sounds way MEAN. The hi performance cam will go in towards the end of the week. It's getting a cam, new lifters & new pushrods. Then when it's ready, it'll go into the rolling road/Dyno and get an ECU tune put in it, to match the cam. New wheels and tires are on the way, the new power steering pump will be here this week and I'm starting the bed install tomorrow. The front end, is next week.

So, by the way, the F150 is fixed. It was the fuel pump. Stalling condition is gone. When it's freezing outside, the IAC or the MAF will let it stall on start up, unless you tap the pedal once it fires, but once it's running, it's back to normal.

I put several hundred miles on it, seems fine.

My buddy lent me a really nice car from his dealer lot, I'm driving in style right now. Let's just say it's AWD twin turbo V8.

Back to the build- not too much progress but most of the difficult stuff is done. This will be a productive weekend with it for sure. The dash isn't done, but the seating position is awesome, the pedals are in the stock location, the tilt is in a better position, overall- Way better this time:

On RR, someone made mention of the bulky dash clocks- I thought I'd share here:
Yes, aftermarket gauges can be done. Add $4,000 usd in material alone. Takes away too much profit, if not all. That's the real reason.
I could use the 50's dash with clocks in the holes from the factory. Trouble is, without that cluster, the engine must run on a stand alone ECU and harness, 100%. Not one sensor from the stock Durango can be used, not one wire nor electrical component.

It's expensive because it's a Hemi engine and transmission not an LS GM motor. The way the coils pick up and the way the transmission works in conjunction with the engine management system- it's not worth it. Trust me, I've looked into it.

As far as buyers go, I can't build these fast enough, they're pre sold, at least three more after this one. This one is the best configuration of the dash so far. At this price, this is the best it's going to get. Once the interior is put together, it'll be fine. The owner absolutely loves it and that's what counts.

These trucks, as we've seen- have a price point in the market. They are worth building, but nobody is getting rich doing these things, that's for sure. The best part about these trucks is that they are fun, fast & loud and there's talk of me moving my operation to the big boy's shop. It's just talk at this point but hey- one thing's certain- The builds continue!

Yesterday I had the wheels and tyres mounted. Oops, my spell checker says TIRES. ;)

I tacked the bed into permanent location and then today, it warmed up and melted the snow. I took the truck outside and hung the body panels in a "mock up" to see what it was going to look like. Nothing is connected, it's all just hanging there.

Cutting the fenders on this one will be interesting, doesn't need much because these wheels have more offset but a smaller diameter.

I use the bigger wheels on the other trucks, so that I can "center" the wheel in the opening. On this size, that'll be a bit tougher. Still- this is taking shape;

I took the engine out of the truck. I put it on a stand and upgraded the Camshaft to a performance unit, lifters, pushrods and valve springs. I had to make the tool to compress the springs because it was $200! I also put new head gaskets, cleaned the valve covers and the timing cover with a bit of bead blast. I put the engine BACK IN the truck, connected the exhaust and starter, a few sensors and the motor mounts. Then I called it a day. It was an easy 12hr day out there but it had to get done, and now it is.

Regular job this week, so it'll be done in little spurts. I took pics but they were with an oil covered phone, so the images are crap, but you'll get the idea. I'll post those up one night this week.
I should be able to start the engine with the new cam and full header exhaust. I heard that it might not idle with this cam and the stock ECU tune, but that's alright- once the body is done, it already has plates and insurance, I'm going to road test it. Then it's off to the tuner shop.

Not sure how they penalise - but if you are that Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner person you can use your phone when driving and cause a crash where someone gets killed because you rammed their car into an oncoming car, and nothing happens at all.

Some cities have phone penalties, some do not. I do have a sound clip, I need to put that in a video. I was drinking and forgot to add that footage into the International vid.

The exhaust is totally different than all the others. It has a 268 camshaft, for starters. Also, it has long tube headers. It has a flowmaster muffler and then it simply dumps on the ground, just in front of the rear axle.

The ford is getting worked on Sunday because I just got hold of the bolts to connect the engine to the trans, plus the engine mounts. I'll offer it all, up to see what's what.

It was locally developed by a performance arm of Ford Australia before it closed recently so was available in full scale production cars with warranty and uses a Harrop/Eaton based supercharger with the base output being 315kW/428hp and the top of the line models made 351kW/471hp though this model had an overboost condition producing over 400kW/536hp

H&S at it's best, great starting cars on bare wires

Haha! Yep! I love the two litres of petrol in the open bucket with bare wires running inside of it. Well, I insulated them with black tape, but hey- that's as far as it got! I figured if it burst into flames, the door was right there, I could toss the baby out with the bathwater... (an old American phrase)

We are up to 432 Subscribers on the You Tube channel. SUPER pumped about that. Wait until you all get a load of the NEXT thing we're building. It's insane, trust me...

Keep watch, this one is going to be on the road in a week or two. :)

Yeah, I had a song playing on the radio in my garage, you tube blocked it. Try it again and let me know if it's up for you, or I will reupload. Thanks and sorry bout that chaps!
It's sorted now

There's a glitch in the recorded audio, plus you tube took out the offending song, it's all effed up for a minute or two in the middle of the video, but it's getting so many views now, I'm leaving it up.

That's not a glitch; that's the camera picking up electrical interference, or at a push the microphone just taking a dislike to one of the specific frequencies in the exhaust note.

Anyway, great video, loved it, laughed my ass off at the excitement in the garage.

Its referred to as clipping.....

Which to a layman is the mic being overloaded and just saying 'no' and send out splatter to the recorder. Sort of like taking your new girlfriend to a concert that she finds too loud, she'll just put her fingers in her ears, give dirty looks, and won't put out at all.
