Hello again everyone!

The last truck was such a success that I started looking around on the internet to see if I could get lucky enough to find another one of those early 50's International Pickup trucks.

I found one in California, bad glass, no papers etc. Found several others that were in the wrong year range. Nothing that I could use, maybe some 1960's stuff but I wanted the same body style truck because I already know exactly what to do with one of those. Nothing that was rough & ready. I took a shot in the dark at an area of Indiana that is very rural, middle of nowhere type stuff.

I found a kid with the exact same truck. He was selling it cheap (sort of) because he'd gotten in over his head and knew he was never getting it finished.

I called him up, about three and a half hours away. We made a deal and I borrowed a tow dolly and long into the wee hours of the night, I brought it home.

It's the more civilian version of the R-120 3/4 ton truck that I had before, basically the same exact thing, but this one is an R-110 with nicer door cards, it's a half ton truck and a four speed on the floor.

It's also in much better original condition. Good glass on this one, good papers. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you:

The next installment of--

Hemi 4x4 1953 International pickup truck ('Old Blue as it's now known)

No, you're right- they look just like that tow mater thing. Any old truck with big wings resembles that thing. I still don't like these type of trucks, but the guys with the money sure like them.... ;)

It'll be another Hemi 4x4, but more creature comforts and a few differences. Less fab work needs to be done on this one. The hunt is on for a donor truck!

Jiff Lemon

same donor as last time?

Grenade
09-05-2016, 21:28
Yes. 2004-2009 Dodge Durango 5.7 Hemi AWD.

Finding this truck, this close (3.5hrs) and in this shape, is kind of unbelievable. I looked for hours in southern states on the 'net.

Finding another cheap 5.7 donor is proving to be most difficult. They're about 4-6k right now. I might use my black daily driver as the donor. Maybe. Depends on $$ :)

The wife and I have discussed me keeping my black truck and chopping up her Hemi Durango... If that happens, she's winning wife/mother of the year I can tell you that!

We'll see. It's a money thing at this point.

Being honest I was kinda hoping for something different this time around (purely from a spectators point of view).... but i can appreciate why you're sticking to the formula for financial reasons.

As you were.

I'm intrigued to see how good you can get at something famiar.

Although you don't technically need a dodge truck, remember the TVR chassis? You could plop it on that, 2wd sure but lower than a badgers badger.

I agree with this in one sense, but will be nice to be able to tweak the bits you weren't happy with last time. And at your work rate, the next project will be along soon enough....

Its now a formula that he knows will get a result..and its a good result.

will he cut the Durango floor pan out this time and save himself some fabrication time?
will he fit the Durango heater to add more comfort?.
will he do something different with the tray?like a tow deck, for a 5th wheel trailer, for the last purchaser?

tune in next time when you will here him say..."I'm buying the wife a Newer truck....its cutting time" or will it be "found this cheap at the junk yard....Damaged Vehicle Auction/impound auction"

Grenade

I will check into that floor pan idea- good thinking.

And yeah, I know this seems like more of the same old same old, but I did a few V6 MR2 swaps before I realized the market isn't very strong for those over here and switched to something else. I prefer driving the V6 MR2 over an old body swapped truck, but I have three people waiting for this to be finished so they can buy it. The guy that bought the last one wants this one and told me to "hurry up". It might cross the pond this time or sold here. One thing is for sure, the price just went up lol

I hadn't planned on doing another one of these and would normally wait until next winter to start on a project. I was surfing the net with coffee and I knew that tow dolly was parked at my friend's house when I stumbled into this same truck. I just had to go and get it.
I'll make this one as interesting as I can, knowing the vehicles are the same. For the spectators, I'll spice it up a bit!

Crash damaged durango for the win? Are the body panels worth anything to sell or is it just scrap value?

Anything with the Hemi engine in it, if wrecked is dismantled within minutes. Nigh on impossible to find, but I'll keep looking. The bodies aren't worth anything, they all rust in exactly the same places. I might try and start this old thing today.

A lot less work and a lot more direction on this one Paul. A winner from the start.

Grenade
10-05-2016, 17:46
I could make it 2wd and race car ish, but that adds a bunch of new problems to work out. I can do this 4x4 swap easily now because the long days of trying to figure stuff out, are over. I know exactly what to do. I can do it better and faster.

My black Durango is up for a bunch of basic maintenance and cosmetic items. Doing the maths (maths lol) it's cheaper to buy a little runabout for the summer and use my truck for this build, then it is to perform all the maintenance and cosmetic things that my truck needs. My truck has been good to me and I've had it for probably 3-4 years. It's tried and true, tested and runs perfect so it would make a good chassis for 'Old Blue.

If I keep my truck I need to spend quite a bit on it, PLUS buy a more expensive donor vehicle. I've been looking at the little Ford Escapes, they run into high miles like Toyotas. If I could get a cheap one of those, I'd say goodbye to my black truck and it can become the star of the show instead of the 12 year old, showing it's age tow vehicle off roader that it has become. Hmmmm

All that whining about "My Truck, the wife's truck" is over. I stumbled upon an old advert on Craig's list with no pictures. It read "2004 Durango 5.7 Hemi non running for parts or complete".

One hour away. The wife and I drove out, saw it, made the deal and called a tow truck then had some lovely local family restaurant dinner. Shortly after arriving home, the tow truck arrived and dropped our donor chassis into the driveway next to 'Old Blue.

The engine is suspect, but I'm not afraid. It's ON. (oh and it has brand new tires on it. The wife claimed those instantly)

already winning, perks of the donor having common bits I guess...half hour, a few jacks and a rattle gun, all the wheels swapped:)

if I was closer, Id be round to help lift that body off the top....

The body is coming off tomorrow. This engine, has a hole in the block. If I can salvage parts from it and build a good engine, I will do that. If not, then I'll get a rebuilt short block assembly somewhere.
It's all good, with brand new tires for the wife's truck, this was a DEAL.

Indeed. You don't have a secret troupe of polish labourers do you?

Grenade
13-05-2016, 13:08
A "troupe of Polish labourers"? No but I could use a Toupee made by Polish people hahaha (bald joke, get it..)

It's much easier when you're completely familiar with all the parts. Which tools to use in which spots etc. It really is much easier the second time around, much like V6 swapping MR2's I suspect?

I saved all the Aircon equipment. This truck had a small, compact heat & air unit in the rear, for the 3rd row of seats. I figure if I can get the condenser in the front somewhere, I can utilize the modern system with only having to have a couple lines made up for it. Normal heat & A/C will add value.
I have also (under suggestion from our mate Sketchy) saved the floor pan from the Durango as well as the bit that holds the steering column and pedal box. If I can graft that under the International cab floor (and I think I can) this truck's interior will be really cool. It might even have power seats. This is going to be a much nicer truck at the end. I'm a little sore from climbing around the thing for two days, but it's a good kind of sore. :)

Gav, can you do a thread on the best way to remove the fog lights?

thomp1983
13-05-2016, 21:36
Your only option is to drill the mounting bolts adam, you can either buy a long 6mm bit and leave the bumper in place or if you use a chisel to split the 2 plastic pins in the corners you can remove the bumper with the foglights in place giving you alot better access to the job

Grenade
13-05-2016, 23:03
I think I destroyed a pair of lights getting them out, so I'm useless on that info.

I got the engine out of the chassis and it's on the stand. That thing came apart at high RPM. Not sure how much I can save, but the block and at least one piston is in a million pieces. Pics late tonight.

Yep, with a drill. Helps if you can get the top of the spotlights to eye height so you can see what you're aiming at.

I've seen engines running with holes in them, it depends a lot on where and what has failed, with a bit of luck it's a conrod in the middle and there is no major damage to the head or crank. Would it be cheaper to just get a replacement bare engine than a full rebuild? Not sure what they go for out there?

I'm trying to find a bare block and I'll buy one loaded piston like I did last time and re-use everything, if it's useable that is.

Remanufactured short blocks are $1900-2600 USD. I'm not sure if I need heads, I didn't get it apart all the way and had to stop. Wife's making me go somewhere and I have to come out of the garage. She said there will be beer and food, so I'm going!

I discovered the thermostat was definitely stuck in the closed position. The intake and all of it's bolts looked to be good, unlike the last engine that had this problem. If it sucked in water through the intake, the gaskets would have to be faulty and the airbox could have been submerged.

I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, the thermostat stuck closed and it overheated, tossing a head gasket. Or there is more damage in the cylinder wall than I can see, but the entire engine was FILLED with coolant, oil and chunks of metal. I don't see where a water jacket was compromised. Again, I'm not in there all the way, but something seems odd about why this one "grenaded" ;) The radiator was empty and the oil pan had all the coolant.
Either way, I'm on the hunt for a block. I'll check the heads tomorrow.

A buddy from work stopped by today and I had to stop playing with engines and install his car stereo for him. It took a couple hours and I guess that will about do it for me today. Hoping to catch a few hours cleaning up tomorrow and making a list of plugs, HT leads, oil, gaskets etc,

I'm going to break the entire engine down and clean everything, label it all and begin reassembly while the gaskets are being shipped.

Waiting on parts is lame. I had to go in to actual work.

I did source some cool steel rims. Different than the last ones, but interesting and should have that retro feel when mounted. About 40 pounds for all four. Nice.

This one will have the whitewalls again, that worked out great. All that has arrived is the spark plugs and some block plugs I needed. Still waiting on the full gaskets and this timing chain tensioner because I broke it upon removal and I had already given the scrap engine away, there was a good one on that. I could have had it free, but I'm a dickhead, broke it and gave away the scrap. Cost me 42 usd that mistake.

It's almost ready to start. This block that I have, was missing the filter nipple so I can't start the engine until I find one. Never thought to check if the damn oil filter nipple was still in the block.
I'm near Summit racing superstore, so I hope they have something that will work. It's 45 minutes away but if they have the nipple, I can fill it with oil and turn the key. I still have the alternator, power steering pump & serpentine belt to do on the front of the engine, and plug in all of the ECU stuff, but it should run once I get that filter nipple.

Damn sod's/Murphy's law! If I would have left that block sitting here, I could have saved myself the 40 bucks for the chain tensioner that I had broken earlier and now this filter nipple. The saga continues tomorrow.

So far? So good. It's had several heat cycles, no leaks, no noises and no overheating. I do have some actual work to do this week, so I might not be able to start stripping the International for a couple days, but the chassis is ready.
This is cool and everything, but I want to actually drive this one around a little bit before it gets sold. I have steel wheels, but different steelies, and I know there's lots of cutting, welding and grinding yet to do- I want to have some fun with this thing.

I saved the floor pan, the center console and the front seats. I should be able to use this floor in the International cab. I hope I can, because this has power seats and it will have much more room in the cab than in the other truck.

It seems like it's running fine and I'm hoping to start on the tear down of the old truck, by the end of the week. Anyone want to lay odds on how long it'll take to tear down the old truck? My guess is about 10 hours.

will he hide the dash the same, or go for a more tidy look? he is fitting a more modern AC setup, will have power seats, much nicer truck:)

I dunno...the not riding around the yard on a seat that's tied on, with make shift steering column support is better than last time....
but, how many times do we look at people's 3vz/1mz installs and go "that's exciting"

the question now becomes, how will this evolve?

yup steelies and white walls, old patina look on the outside steel work.
but the interior will progress quicker, should have mentioned earlier to keep the moulded carpets too...oops
will he hide the dash the same, or go for a more tidy look? he is fitting a more modern AC setup, will have power seats, much nicer truck:)
what else will he do to tart it up? or angry it?

The way to pick these odd shaped truck cabs up, is to build something like this. It was much easier and faster the second time around. Next truck- I'm going to make the pivot point/fulcrum adjustable so that when I cut away metal, I can adjust the way the cab hangs from the lift. The weight keeps changing as I remove bulkhead & flooring.

Stock bucket seats that bolt right in, a center console with cup holders- It going to be pretty damn decent in here! Thanks for the idea Sketchy, I never thought about it until you mentioned it.

I'll say that he did a nice job with that build. I've heard about the guy that does that with Dodge Dakota pickups. The problem is that old, no longer made or sold, 318 V8 engine. Another problem is he's not using the 4 wheel drive ones. Too complicated or not worth it for him perhaps.

Anemic, the 318's.. They never were that good and I'm a Dodge guy. My first truck when I was 17 had that 318 in it. Trust me, in that video he said "you won't want any more power". He's wrong, those motors are nothing in comparison to the Hemi engines.

What he's doing is cool. What he's doing probably sells. But not to the same guy that I'm shooting for. The guy I want to buy my trucks, thinks the 318 on the Dakota platform, just isn't cool enough.

I had a brand new 1999 Dodge Dakota with a 318 and 4x4. It was a decent truck, but not like the Hemi powered AWD stuff. What he's using in his builds, is pushing 20yrs old. What I'm using is just over 10.

He does nice work and starts with cleaner trucks. Somebody message him and ask him what one of those costs with the 318, and what it would cost with a Hemi 4x4 in it... Bet he's at a loss for words. New Top Gear tomorrow night, I heard there could be SPOILERS in it lol :)

I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with that guy. SUPER cool dude. He runs a body shop in Kentucky, about 8-10hrs south of here. He's done a BUNCH of these trucks. He uses the 2 wheel drive Dodge Dakotas because down there, nobody buys four wheel drive trucks, it doesn't snow where he is. The wheel/track width of a Dodge Dakota fits under the stock wheel wells of the international without cutting them. That's why he didn't choose the Hemi Durango. That, and he has the impression that the early Durango engines are no good because so many of them are blown up. I shared with him, why they blow up and they are in fact strong motors.

Now dig this:
One of his friends actually bought my last build! He looked at it and recommended to his buddy that yes, it is a good truck- he just didn't like the cut wheel arches and some of the work could have been done to a higher standard, but he says it's a pulling monster. Can you believe that? INSANE that the only other guy doing the International & Dodge merge/builds actually looked over MY truck. I'm floored by that.

What a small world! It looks like there's room for both of us and he was really cool on the phone. If I lived closer, I would be working with that guy. He knows exactly the struggles of doing these things without at least one qualified helper. He has 2 guys helping him from his body shop. I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing with these and he's on a much bigger scale that I am actually, but he says he's done well monetarily. Neither of us knows how long the trend will last, but we're in it for the time being.

(from what I understand, the guy that bought it from me, has sold it to a friend of this other builder)

Grenade

So are you cutting (or have you cut) the arches on this one the same? If you're fitting steelies are they different enough that it would clear the arches?

It's funny to watch, the last build you were all "I'm gonna do this" and on this build its "yeah I did this". Flying at it.

Grenade
31-05-2016, 01:48
I have to cut the wheel arches. Have not done it yet, the wings are just mocked up. After they are mounted proper, I'll cut them a little nicer this time. The steel wheels are the same size as what's there now. I'm going to do the grinder whitewalls with these tires that are on it.
I did the dash clocks/binnacle. It's sat up higher than the last one because of the floor pan from the donor truck. I had to lower the entire foot box on the firewall or it wouldn't work at all. In the future, I'll probably use the floor pan and the cab mounts, but not the bulkhead. The position of the steering column was better in the one I built, but this truck will be more comfortable to drive. The main thing is it saved me time. The International cab is much narrower than the donor so moving the column and the pedal box on the Durango floor pan and making it work, sucked. It's still not over as far as I would like it and the binnacle is higher, but when you sit in the truck, it's pretty comfy. Should fine-
Well screw it, it is what it is :)

And here's the update:

I call it "Bodgetastic".

Somebody suggested on the last build, that rather than cover the binnacle in cheap black carpet, I try to match the color of the original truck. That made it a bit difficult because when you're not concealing the metal structure, you have to have a different approach to making it. It has to be neater, more smooth and you have to mount it in a different way. This was challenging. The last one? I just screwed the clocks to the metal dash and wrapped it in sheet metal, pop rivets and carpet. This unit had to be built and mounted as one piece. A bit of a bitch really.

This dash cluster ALSO didn't cover the holes from the old gauges. The reason that this one is different than the last one- is because the floor pan of the Durango.
This caused all sorts of problems.
Sure- it made the floor fabrication quicker. What it also did, was mount the foot pedal box up too high and subsequently the master cylinder power brake booster also too high. You couldn't put the bonnet on. It hit the reservoir. You couldn't move the pedal box closer to the engine because the Durango bulkhead shape wouldn't allow it. You couldn't move the box down, because the pedals hit the floor. I stole an inch here, an inch there and thankfully the pedals are adjustable. I got it to work but it would have been easier to make my own floor pan and bulkhead. I am not sure which way I'll go on the next one.

I found some paint that was damn close to the celery color and the hearing aid beige that this thing was painted 60 odd years ago...
I could have made it look better if I fiber glassed the entire thing, but this took long enough. I remade the binnacle a couple times and finally made a template of this, so next time I can just bang one out.
I'm not real happy with it, but it's secure and once the whole thing is done, you won't really focus on it too much. I hope. :)

Overall- the seating position is good/fair. The steering and driving position is decent and slightly better than the last one. This one will be more comfortable, but exactly how much- remains to be seen if it was worth it to use the Durango floor pan.

Yep- I'll cover those sides and fit the heater controls to the console. They're just sitting there right now. It never was about a custom interior anyway.
It's a bit more comfortable and will drive nicer than the last one.
It's all about the 4x4 and that 5.7 engine & drive train with a vintage body on it. It'll be fun and someone is going to love it.
I'm planning the half motorcycle sprocket on the bonnet and probably pipes out the side again. That way, no matter where these trucks end up, you'll always know it was one of my builds. They'll just keep getting better and better.

I am going to start on the front end and get the grill, wings and radiator installed next, so it will run and drive in and out of the garage. I need to clean up in there!

That is a beautiful truck. A British car show and an auto jumble are high on my "to do" list.

This one has less square footage to patch than the last one, but I only had to rebuild one hinge on the last one, this one was two. The last one had solid fenders on top, but the bottom skirts were rusted out. This one, the top mounting edges were gone, but the skirts are much better. Patching areas that are mostly flat, goes quickly.

Problem with this front end, is that all of the flanges and folded edges, you know- the hard stuff- that's what I had to rebuild. Hopefully today's job won't take too long and I can get back home and mount the front end. I have a plan for the wheel arches this time...

Grenade
08-06-2016, 03:07
The long hours fabricating the edges of everything the other day, paid off today. I mounted the grill, both front wings AND the radiator! I also cut the two front wheel arches. I made another template so all four arches will be the same. I also have a grill template because all these International trucks in this part of the country are gone in the same spots.

Grenade

Oh yeah, gas is the way to go. People that use flux core are dummies...... (haha shit- I was going to post in the welding thread about that) But seriously folks- there are spots of welding on this build, that look as professional as you can get. Most of it doesn't, because I rush, but there are moments of brilliance with the gas bottle for sure.

Flux core is cheap and quick, like for welding a trailer bracket or something. Sheet metal and panel fab? The bottle is the only way to go. The bottle belongs to my boss, he said it's no problem if I use it all, he'll refill it. I've done the entire last truck and this whole truck so far- it's only half empty.

Grenade
10-06-2016, 01:07
Items left to do:
Wiper blades, the arms already work
Exhaust
Lights
Engine bay; air cleaner, mount ECU, mount fuse boxes & connect heater core. Oh yeah- add a fan.
Cut up back bed and section it, fabricate and mount the sides, hang rear fenders and cut back wheel arches.

The interior is fine. It's not a show truck, but this one is much nicer than the last body dropped truck I did. It's really comfortable and the heat works with the factory controls. To make the aircon work, I have to somehow fit the condenser & receiver dryer in the bay and have 6 lines made. It's a bit of an expensive fuss, that is waiting until the end, I might just pass that job on to the new owner. The AC compressor is on the engine and the AC coil is under the dash in the heater fan box. Same as before, tilt, cruise, 4x4, power steering, power brakes. This time it has traction control. The donor truck was ordered with traction control, so it stays. There is a "FUN" button, in case you want to turn it off. It has 4x4 Hi and Lo settings too.
The power outlet is also working, to charge your phone- there are two of those. I'm not doing a radio.

It might be easier to add an all in one unit, called vintage air. I think the cost is near the same as having all these lines added & made. Plenty of time to look into that.

Thanks guys and yeah, he's had it for what, a month or two? He's been traveling all over the place with it. He wants more trucks. He said the sprocket on the hood and the side exhaust, they are either "love it or hate it" with people. He said that's about the worst of what people say about it. I'm not sure what category it won a trophy in, I'll ask him.
He was approached by a TV channel, at one of the shows- to put the truck in a country music video. He said it's happening, he's leasing the truck to them for three days of shooting.
He also said that he wants this old blue truck in 3 weeks. He wants it for a huge car show, where he says he will put it on a stage on a rotisserie with his company name and mine as the builder.

The one thing I DO know, is he paid me for the last truck, so he's not a bullshitter as far as I can tell. I'm going to try and hit the 3 week deadline and see what happens.
Grab popcorn, this could get exciting. (or as life is sometimes, nothing could happen and I'll just keep building rusty junk and talking about it on a forum anyway) lol

That is stock exhaust manifolds, stock cats and a Y pipe. No muffler or pipe at all. It's getting a muffler and a different exhaust exit. That's basically cut off right at the cats. Sounds decent unless you had to drive it every day, plus it's what we refer to as "Ticket loud". It's above the decibels to be street legal.

I stopped for an hour here and there, dinner with the family and playing around with the video, but I got the bed into position in about 4 hours. It was much easier this time, plus my wife and son helped hold the panels to get them tacked into place. Everything is just mocked up into it's rough position, but it's taking shape!

I ran out there and welded two braces on, hung a rear fender just for the photo op. The running boards will make it look much lower, it appears sat up high, but once I trim the rear arch and get those running boards on, it'll be cool.
I adjusted the stance of this one slightly, because when the other truck gets a load in it or a trailer hooked up, it drops too low in the back. This one loaded, will be sat level.

I was asked about not using the Durango interior on another board.
Yep- I know, vintage interior would be better but that moves this into a different price package. I could make it look old and do several things differently, but the consensus was, "make it more modern inside, more comfortable but not expensive". So that's what I did.

I have found a source of mostly rust free international trucks. Average price is double over the rusty ones I use. Later on in this scenario- I may start using more solid trucks, but this deal is working, although they're still hard to find, rust or not.

I can't wait to get the steel wheels on this thing with whitewalls. I worked on the bed a little today, not much- crazy day.
More later.... :)

But anyway- I have discovered a way to pull rust out of old paint and I'm sure car people know about it, but I was shocked to see it restore color to this thing. The front half of the truck was sanded/flatted down by the previous owner or I could have saved more of this truck's colors. Crazy!

Anyway- here is the result of 28-31 hours since Saturday Morning.
Happy father's day everyone! My kids were home and they helped with stuff and the family sat outside in the sun while I worked on the truck. Nice.

Fathers day is still some time away....
But your nearly there. And a week to go?

Grenade
20-06-2016, 13:58
For us, father's day was yesterday. The build is progressing well, I'm already looking forward to the next one! (I must be nutty)

What did I use to pull the rust out of the paint? The stuff I use to make the rust color on new metal. To make rust, I use Muriatic acid, wait until it dries and then spray peroxide on the metal and it makes instant rust.
To remove rust, I just put muriatic acid in a spray bottle and let it sit on the rust for a few minutes, then I wiped it off with a dry rag. I couldn't believe how much it removes.

The long tedious part about this job were those running boards and the exhaust. Man, that took SO long to pound out those little curves. I hope the next one I do will have solid running boards, I could save an entire day's work on those alone.

The deck boards in the bed, were supposed to be more of a gray color, but the can of stain was more blue than gray, I might do a light sanding to reveal more wood color or just go over the blue with a gray color. Not sure how I feel about blue boards. I've got a busy week this week so I'm not sure how much time I'll get with it this week.
It's close :)

Last night I found a tin of gray wood stain tucked in a cabinet. I dipped a cloth in the stain and wiped gray over top of the blue color. This is just about the exact color I was going for in the first place. I wanted a slight blue hue, with a dirty gray look to it.
I think it's fine now.

I have a bunch of little patching to do, the wheels and tires, mount the automatic fan & relay, the front bumper, wire in the lights.... I have to check my list but that's most of what's left.

I'm starting to get a bit excited about this one really. If the AC actually works in this one? MMmm, the price just went up :)

Thanks everyone!

It's freaking AMAZING that the entire build, the forum threads and the sale has happened so fast. That's right, sale. The man himself came out tonight with his buddy and painter, they bought the truck and it's going to the big show this weekend. There will be 10,000 cars at this show, and some real heavy hitter industry professionals will be in attendance. I'm going to stand a few feet away from my build and see what people say. Good or bad (not that I really care too much) I'll never let on that I built it... :)

While I was waiting for them to show up today, I busted my ass and worked about 12 hours getting the next build ready. I had it set up so that the scrap guy was loading up ALL the scrap just as I was cutting off the last piece. Everything is clean, the garage is empty and here we have another chassis with a blown engine. I'll get to work on it in a couple days, I need a break. :)

The talk is that we let this next build make it across the pond to share in the love of the 4x4 Hemi Internationals, and they are thinking of funding an SRT Hemi (6.2L) Durango for the next build.
I haven't even found the vintage truck to plop down on this #3 chassis, but it'll appear when the time is right. It always does.

I am TIRED. It was hot and today was long. I'm just now sitting down for a beer at 11:30 PM. There will be pics and video of the big show this weekend.

now that he has truck number 2, is he shopping for number 3? with a wish list of extras???

or is that a wait for comments at the show?...

Grenade

I think you must be "in tune" with what's going on over here, because YES, he's shopping for #3, with a wish list of improvements! We've talked for over an hour last night when he got the 2nd one home.
This could really get interesting :)

Its cool what you do, I know your doing ok out of it already. just don't sell yourself short mate:)

Grenade

His plan is to invest in a few of these trucks and see if there is enough interest to make a REAL nice one. He says he's gambling, taking a chance on the market- he isn't in these for the quick flip, he wants to take the builds to the next level and start earning real money.

It's cool that they believe in me enough to gamble on my trucks at all!
Yes, I made stronger money on this one than the last. :)

I just got these pics via text this morning. Loaded and rolling to the show. Now this is what I call a road test!
He had a little issue with the brake linkage on the latest build, which he sorted himself and now it's time to GO!
(Cross fingers)

I call this; WOW.

Umm, no. hahaha
They pull up with a trailer the very day I tell them it's done!

Shit I gotta drive one of these things. They said they can get both axles spinning in a four wheel drift, pulling on to the road from the bar lol

I need video of that! I'm driving the next one for sure.

Done the same with a few V6 builds. Around the block and then it's gone.

The. Car. Show.

Over 60,000 people today. Going back tomorrow.

Biggest thing I've ever seen. Yes my trucks were there. I have TONS of pics and video. Need time to process it all, plus shooting again tomorrow.
UNREAL, it was like 20 or 30 car shows rolled into one. More later....

I'm on the hunt for an international body now. I want more than anything for one of these to make it over there. I'm going to keep the MOT in mind again and I want this next build to be affordable to the guys on your side of the puddle. I can't guarantee someone won't run up to me and hit me the face with a stack of money, but I really think it's the UK guy's turn to get a real crack at one of these.

I told the guy that bought my trucks that "It's their turn", meaning the UK guys and he said "We have something big in mind for this winter, so let them have the next one and you can get started on the SRT for the winter project". So- as of right now, my plan is to get this one done in the next 8-9 weeks. That makes it a little less pressure and I can take my time doing nicer work. I've already got several ideas on making these much better.

http://www.fmxpaulgrenade.com/sitepics/2016/sunshow.jpg

I've got a ton of pics and video from the show, it's going to take several hours editing it all into something cool and watchable. It'll be worth it though, that place was like a small city!

Meanwhile, someone offered me a decent amount for the rubber on the Durango chassis, so I sold the tires, which were too small for the build anyway. This is how #3 sits as I type:

I start sending emails in the early morning hours and I check them throughout the day. Basically, I'm "fishing". If someone has a good deal and it pops up, I'll find it.
Usually.

I still can't find a good truck that isn't 10 hours drive away, but I did get my hooks in an engine. I had it delivered and it showed up after work today. Low miles, a good runner with a slight engine noise only for a second on start up, I'm going through the whole engine anyway, so I'll find it.

Once it's running, it sounds perfect so it shouldn't be that difficult to solve. I have a few possible leads on the truck body, but I'm going to keep searching.

I'm a bit peeved by the internet right now. My son and I spent a bunch of hours, each- editing what we feel is an entertaining video look at the car show. Some cool information and just a general guided tour type of thing that came out really fun. Not for the purpose of monetization, just to share with the other car guys and have a laugh.

Because I used 50's music in the background during some of the voice over parts, You tube blocked it everywhere. Nothing I can do with it. Vimeo blocks for content- they all do it. I have this really cool 25min video that nobody is allowed to watch. Pi$$es me off. Too much work to change all the soundtrack and it takes away from the feel of the piece if I use generic garbage tracks. I'm going to work for a few hours. I'll check back later but that really $ucks. #HatingTHEinternetRightNow

Unfortunately, artist copyright prevails Paul. I've had issues on my websites ensuring there is no breach, as it one of those things that even if you publish someone's intellectual property in error the fines can be quite harsh.

It could have been worse, you could have had several thousands of hits and then they fine you based on the success, as Tiggs says it really does suck monkey balls but it's there to protect the rightful owner.

Foreshadowing is a literary device in which a writer gives an advance hint of what is to come later in the story.
Foreshadowing often appears at the beginning of a story or a chapter and helps the reader develop expectations about the coming events in a story.

I ran down and borrowed this from the guys that bought my trucks.
Now I wonder what I would need this for?

Right? It's a big trailer. I might need a bigger one, if I were going on an actual beer run. :)

Meanwhile, because I'll be driving until late tonight, this little episode should keep you occupied until I get back.
I altered the pitch of the soundtrack from an F to an F# and it seems to have slipped under the radar of pooptube's automated "HEY YOU CANT PLAY THAT SONG software" for now.
It's 25 minutes long, so sit back and enjoy seeing some really amazing vehicles. (Never mind the higher pitched voices, we don't really sound like that)

Tearing down the good Hemi for the #3 build, for inspection and re-gasketing. It looks CLEAN inside, so far.
My gasket kit arrived this morning, so why not eh?

It is a diminishing market, I know you now know the International but are there other choices?

Grenade
17-07-2016, 13:38
Probably. I have found several, they're just literally 15 hours drive away & further. Someone on RR lives in Indiana, transplanted from the UK. He's bought a Durango and an international. He PM'd me for my blessing, blah blah blay-
I should have said "sell me that truck". He's doing it for his personal vehicle, I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. Just like when Paul woods started sticking V6's into MR2's. Before you know it, everyone is doing it.

I'll find one. There are other choices. We'll see, it's only been a few days. I get impatient!
