Rusty pipe

So the onset of JAE is giving me the usual motivation to do bits on the car. Got it out on Saturday to find the metal fuel pipe that attaches to the bulkhead just tank side of the fuel filter has corroded and is squirting petrol around the engine bay. Glad I had my daughter in the car...

Anyway not taken the heat sheilds off yet but how far back does that line go towards the tank and am I best to replace with solid or flexi lines?

Picture of said pipe adam? Some of those lines are a pain to remove cutting it and sleeving with fuel line may be a better option

They don't leak could probably do with a brush down and coating whilst there off.

If it's the one that goes to the top of the fuel filter you'll have issues the joint never comes undone and iirc the other end of it involves dropping the fuel tank

Listen to Thomp, he's bang on right with this, soaking the joint and using all the tools in the world will not get that joint apart without it causing a problem or stripping threads, trust me...... he's bang on the money there. I've tried taking hundreds apart and it nearly always goes badly soaking it or not, those threads simply do not like coming apart, they're a bit like AC pipe connections, same deal, nearly always strips.

My advice would be to drop the tank and replace the carrier to filter line, it is the only way to repair it properly, anything else is a bodge and dangerous, you don't want to be sleeving or repairing a high pressure fuel line anywhere near an exhaust pipe.

Me personally, i'd replace that section and do it properly.

Thanks all for that advice. I need to replace one of the metal coolant hoses so may as well drop the tank on my face while I am at it. Cheers Paul :)

Which metal hose you doing Adam? Ive a full length run of rubber hose that i replaced the brass heater matrix hoses with and clips and clamps.

If you want i can drop my tank and you can do a straight one in one out swap should save you some time plus my man sized trolley jack is available for getting it up

Thanks Chris. No chance my car will be ready for JAE this year unfortunately so coming on my motorbike again.
Will take a pic of the hose later and post it up so we are talking about the same one but you offer is very generous but will happily accept :)

I'd be interested to see some photos of the pipe and the replacement you put in. If it's the pipe I think you mean, I think mine is due replacing as well, looks a bit old and rusty for my liking.

It's the pipe from the bottom of the fuel filter to the fuel tank, it's bolted to the bottom of the firewall. I'm awaiting parts for another solution that doesn't involve dropping the tank
