View Full Version : SC Retractable mirrors
Ok guys, got a set of these coming for my car. All I need to know is has anyone fitted these to a uk car before or the wiring diagrams for them.
Oh I've got a charger spoiler coming too, thinking of doing the krylon chop job on it. Hopefully I won't screw it up.
Cheers guys

Hiya Paff.
WTF are SC retractable mirrors? (The mirrors on all our SC's are colour coded to the bodywork but are mechanically identical to the UK NA.) Did the SC SE have these retractable mirrors? Our spoilers are all as UK too, I take it yours has a brake light or summat?
Cheers,
Owen.

Basically, on Jon's charger (2tone silver over gunmetal dunno if it was the special edition tho) the mirrors had the usual adjustment but there was also a button to fold them into the car when you parked up. I'm buying these off Jon along with his spoiler which has an intergrated brake light in the center. I thought most of the 89 chargers had the spoilers with the extra light.
I'll be at Jons on the weekend so will try and get a few photos of them if you want so you can see what I'm on about.

Sounds nifty, cheers Paff.
Owen.
Actually bit more info. Just found out the retractable mirrors and the spoiler with the light were all standard equip on the SE and the last G-Ltd (think jons was the G-Ltd).

wow. i didn't realize that the uk got the retractable mirrors as well. i thought that was a japanese-only option. see, i'm learning new things already!
don't know about outside america, but here we were required to have some sort of a third brake light starting in mid '86. so all the mk1's here that came with spoilers after '86 have a center light on the spoiler. if they came without a spoiler, it was inside the rear window.
my old mk1 was strange, though. it was built in june or july of '86, which makes it technically an '87, but it is otherwise badged entirely as an '86, and it has no third brake light. *shrug*
i'd like to see some pics of those mirrors when you get them in. i've always thought that was a pretty neat little mod.

im pretty sure we didnt get them in the uk either,i think only the japs got em but we have quite a few JDM imports here in the uk so they turn up from time to time.
As for wiring diags i think ive got some in my mk1 BGB paff, give me a day or two to get my arse off this chair.
Yeah Paul is right there, they were never a uk option, Jon's SC was one of the last imports that came with them 89 SC G-Ltd. That would be awesome if you could get those diagrams Paul, just gotta work out fitting them then, just hope i've got everything needed
I have a set, not wired up yet. But, they are on my car.

Todd, I don't suppose you happen to know where the extra wiring goes or have you still got to work that out.

Well, I have all the wiring info. you will need IF your car does'nt differ in a major way from USDM car. Check here; http://www.carpron.com/multisite/v/Upload/album236/album237/?g2_navId=x0a0cd6da
Three pages worth of pics and on the last page or last 2 pages there is wiring information. Not an official wiring diagram. Heck, I don't know if one even exsisted, but I guess one had to at some point in Japan.
At this time, my mirrors are mounted but not wired up. I have the front of my MR2 in the air getting some suspension parts replaced, etc. So, until I finish that, I won't be wiring them in.
Also, remember some of the instructions are backwards for you as if I say drivers side, it means Pass. side for you..

Oh, they were only a JDM option, Actually in 89 for G-Limited models and they were on all the G model of the Super Edition (the midnight blue SE model, not the gold/white two tone SE model).
So, they are not only on SE models, but were an option for the Later G models which were all late models if they were G' models I guess.
They are really neat, better looking IMO, but are much heavier than stock mirrors b/c of the motors inside.
Also, there was a model of these mirrors that didn't have the extra 4 wires for the retract function but were the same style of mirror, those are the ones that are even more rare to find.

Cheers fella I'll take a look. I'm just hoping we ripped the relay out as well or I'll just have to forget the whole thing anyway. Can't remember exactly whats in the pile of wiring I have.

Well, you need a relay to make them retract. But, there are more relays than just the AW11 one that WILL work. Look on Ebay for Power Retract Toyota mirror relays. Sometimes you will find a person selling them for around $20-$25 US dollars. Those will work as they are usually the same board or a slight variation of that circuit board. It's always nice to have all the connectors too, but the relay connector is probably the most important to have b/c you can't just solder wires directly to the relay board, well, you can but thats sloppy. I know you can use some connectors from a pair of Toyota Windom Retract mirrors as they will plug dirrectly into the AW11 retract switch and mirror harnesses. ALso, the Windom relay is the same as the AW11 relay.
Also, you can use the stock regular power mirror switch and create a separate Retract toggle switch to retract the mirrors.

I'm just going to brag a little and say that my JDM 89SC has retractable mirrors and had the LED spoiler - proper one too where the light is mounted flush into the underside of the spoiler, not one of those US ones with the big rectangular unit stuck to the center support. Not only that but selling it raised a few $$ to help with the conversion! :jump:

Yea, I saw that awhile ago. I have an 89 led spoiler also. I used to have that box light wing before I got the 89 USDM LED spoiler on mine. The US models also came with those LED spoilers but only in 89.

Did you manage to sort this out Paff?
not even looked yet, the mirrors are still sat in Jons garage somewhere and gotta concentrate on the V6 now.
Will eventually get there tho (well I hope anyway)

Have these on my SC ! have to take the door panel off soon to sort the dodgy cog so could have a look at the wiring then !

Why is it that SC's seem to suffer with buggered window motor cogs more than UK cars, and why is it that we haven't bribed or bullied Adam into making more yet?

what do you mean make more has he made some before ?

Er no, sorry, meant make more as in "replacements" not as in "another batch". The only replacements I've seen are the US ones at $30 or so, though UK ebay seems to have them pretty often. That said you might as well buy a UK MOT failure and break it instead!

Bit of a bump! Paff, did you ever manage to get this all wired up?
Jinxy on IMOC is looking for a helping hand and it seems there's very little information available about how to go about it...
nope they are still stored at my mates and had so much else to do not even attempted it. I have a mate who has a bit more time top look than I do and he may be able to work it out (cheers Alun J) :)

Just a really daft idea, but why not just use the wiring diagrams from the Mk2? Lord knows there probably the same!
In fact, given the price of supercharger mirrors, if I really wanted electric folding mirrors, I'd just use the mk2 ones!

Yep, the usual situation with UK and JDM models, with regards to mirrors, is that UK models tended to get heated mirrors and the JDM equivalents got electric folding mirrors. It's pretty consistent across the MR2, GT4 and Supra ranges.
