View Full Version : MkII V6 Auto shafts
Well, a mate of mine wants me to help him convert his MkII to V6 after drooling over mine, lol.
It's an automatic, however and as there is a lack of info I thought I'd bang up a quick post to make our lives a little easier.
I'm pretty sure it's possible to keep the auto trans from either the MR2 or Camry (would prefer to keep Camry box tbh) even if it means going flappy paddle or whatever, but just a couple q's you guys might be able to shed some light on.

Shafts - as per the photo, they appear to be pretty similar in length (ooer) supported shaft not shown, but very close, dimensionally. The splines on the Camry are a bit beefier though and didn't have time to check inside the CVs, is it possible to swap them or use others (Celica, etc) ?
Camry Auto-trans - 2.5 inches longer than MR2 auto-trans, I smell some grinding / hammer relief ?
Wiring, gonna be slightly different I guess?
Any advice of info would be great, but whatever happens the swap will, even if the car gets converted to full manual. (his little eyes are like a kiddies in a sweetshop) xD
Cheers guys

Hi mate!
I think it may have been done already. I seem to recall reading about someone cutting the chassis to fit a Cammy auto gearbox into the Mk2 bay.
Check with Simon (Goldy) he might know.

Yep...
I did it for Michael/mr2big
Do not even consider trying to use the MR2 box, you'll lunch it within 50 miles.
If you're handy with a welder then it really isn't too challenging. I can do you a set of custom mounts to fit the mount the box onto the chassis but this is what else you'll need to do... roughly
-Drill out the spot welds of the P/S mount - you'll need this later
- P/S chassis rail needs a 'relief' approx 22cm wide (i think - check the end of the box), 20cm tall and 1.5cm deep.
- Box in and stiffen - ensure the ties from the outer skin are attached to your new inner skin. I used a mere 2mm sheet here 2 year and still is fine
- Re-attach P/S mount but lift it 30mm higher up. Fully weld and add a tie off the top of the mount to the inner arch or triangulate with sheet back to the chassis rail
- With my set of Auto mounts and Woodsplurt's engine mounts now hang your gearbox and engine in the bay.
with the engine and box in the rest is a doodle.!
- Usual wiring guff - it's all witchcraft i tell you!
- Use the Camry Auto inner shaft/splines and support bearing with turbo hubs and turbo outer shafts - direct fit, no messing.
- PRNDS selector needs swapping. Take the one off the camry box replace with the MR2 one. Needs a custom bracket tabbing to retain the cable.
- Add an exhaust
- Add one driver
Enjoy!
The Auto makes the V6 a completely different car. It's not as rawty, thrashy, throwy as a manual ... it is a true GT car. Michael let me take his to JAE last year (from Kent) and it is a joy to drive.
Great stuff, thanks guys, loads of good help there.
So....anyone got a set of rear turbo hubs and shafts lying around ?
Cheers
As an extra bonus... the camry box shifts faster than the mk2 mr2 box, well michael's 1mz one does!
Well, t' 3VZs sitting happily in the bay, with Camry auto-box still connected ofc, no chassis mods required.
Used one of my Piano V6 mounts on the offside. There is already a relief area in the correct place that gives about 7mm clearance on nearside, just needed to modify the MR2 auto-box mount & mount plate a bit to fit onto the Camry auto-box, didn't take long.

The original MR2 front torque bracket bolts onto the Camry box in exactly the correct position.
There is also a couple of bolt holes already drilled and tapped in the rear of the Camry auto-box that are very close to the MR2 rear torque mount, just needs a couple holes drilled about 20 mm down, a 22mm spacer at the back of one hole, as the aluminium casing is stepped slightly and the mount-bolt holes re-drilling about 26mm closer toward the front of the car. Forgot to take a pic of this, will grab one tomorrow.
Also the Camry supported shaft bracket (the one that bolts onto the rubber mount at the rear of the shaft) can and will be incorporated by cutting down the threads slightly and welding a plate to the MR2 subframe, however that is a job for tomorrow as we ran out of time, still progress was good for 6 hours work. Could only work on it from 11am till 5pm today :/
more updates soon.

That looks very cool, carry on that man.
how much longer is that v6 auto axle compared to the mr2T?
there was a kiwi running an a241 in his, but the a541 may be a better option WHEN I lunch mine...I was adding a big oil cooler though, but still..

I've got a pair of Camry auto shafts here. I kept them as I intend to compare the CV cages / joints as a possible upgrade when I fit the 2GR.

Just fit the uprated turbo inner cages Chris and full turbo LSD shafts (if you've got an LSD box that is ) tb developments were doing uprated inners about 200 notes for a full kit not just the inners cages and balls the full setup, I don't know if its still the same price but at £100 a side I thought that was cheap for twice as strong balls lol.
The question is do I wait till I break the old ones or just fit the new ones?
Cant answer that mate, as I don't have any tubby shafts to compare with, as yet, but i can grab you dimensions from the NA-Auto and Camry=Auto ones.
Its all wired in now too, did'n't get chance to look at it for almost a week after first post due to weather and other comittments and has taken quite some time to actually figure out the auto box wiring as i had virtually no info and no auto wiring schematics for the Camry. Also the Camry engine loom was different to any one i have seen so far, some wires different colours and even some in different places, e.g. wires not on the plugs they usually are found, ...which was strange, still all done now.
Got some Tubby hubs, need tubby shafts now.
Good man, was the diagram I sent you any use or for the wrong vehicle?

Very nice! I want to do the V6 conversion on my auto tranny '93 but don't want to modify the chassis at all. Have you thought of cobbling a total conversion kit together for guys like me with average mechanical skills who don't want to go thru the fabrication process? You could really help some folks out and make some cash to boot!
