Hi guys

99% sure that my G-box not want to play anymore, I was at a redlight when i decide to do (402m) 1/4 mile test, rev the enegin and when green light
I just let go of clutch pedel and off we go for 1m and then I heard a rattling nois from the G-box :icon_mad:.

The g-box was from a -92 N/a and had rolled 124000 mile...

Now that I probably will change g-box! what way should I go? is it a gen3 box I should look for (94> ?) I have been reding about the Mk3 LSD here on the site, dose somebody have the art.number of the LSD so I can look for it here in sweden? whice G-box dose mr-s use?

Would be very grateful if someone could give me valuable tips...Cheers/ Christian

I wouldn't use the mr-s gearbox as its more like chewing gum if you abuse it by doing quarter miles, na box just pick up another slap it in.

Ok, I was not planing to use the hole mk3 box, just the LSD, but can you use the hole mk3 box on the 3vz-fe??? I would like to have a stronger box ( or is it necessary ) and im going to use the car as a track day and just driving car, will most likely not abuse it like that anymore, think I did my homework...

On a v6 just use the mk3 LSD in an na box, if going for more power than 300bhp then use the turbo box.

The na gearbox is pretty strong you may have just worn it out and need a new gearbox.

Like I wrote in the first post, are the gen3 s54 boxes better and stronger? And how can you tell the
different between them? And from which year they're?

Hi again, is't possible to change the gearbox whit the engine still in the car or do I have too drop the engine too???

Yes rev3 gearboxes are supposed to have stronger internals. Not sure how you can tell the differences by eye tbh. I think you just have to trust the seller.
Engine doesn't have to come out but you will need to support it before removing the gearbox mounts.

Paul the resident mr2 guru probably can tell by eye which rev it is.
Rev 3 and some late rev 2 have bigger synchros on turbo boxes don't know about the na boxes Paul could probably advise.

Hi all, I Have now changed g-box!!! It was a struggle...
Witch g-box oil should I go for, in my old box I used redline MTL after recommendations in the Toyota workshop manual that says that s54 g- box should have an ATF dexron ll transmisson oil !!?? Now I believe that is wrong.

I'm more into redline mt90 or some other 75w 90...so are im right or ???
The g-box im talking about is the S54 -91

i would use manual transmission oil! not atf. i have used a few before nice ones and cheap ones, don't really see much difference on the roads, maybe someone that does races could notice the difference in the oils.

We use Dextron ATF in our gearboxes.

Pat's is still running around fine a year later after some jolly spirited driving.

I was told that the the Audi vw dual clutch gearbox oil is the one to use for spirited turbo gearbox racing.

Ok, I drove last season whit the mtl oil, like atf I think. Hope it will work for pat...
The oil you guys used was relly cheap,£ 3,99 /L nice price!!! I payed approximated £18 for 0.9 L

Hi everyone...now my second s54 tranny gone broken!!! In the bottom of the trannyhouse I got a hole...all the gearoil ran out !!!
Now I'm going for a e153 gbox instead, I have found a jdm gbox whit LSD, what more do I need?
Driveshaft, hubs, gearlinkcabels...something more???

I have a trd pressureplate (turbo) , will it be up for the job whit the 3vzfe?

I think you've just been unlucky, i've had Supercharged V6 engines running S54 gearboxes for years without issue.

I wouldn't have a turbo box for free on a 3vz.

and yes...good quality EP 75w90 or Redline mt90 is the stuff you want to be using :) You really do get what you pay for with oils, so buy the best you can afford.

Why not?

Far too heavy, driveshafts are too heavy, gear ratios are better with the S54 and turbo boxes cost a fortune to replace.

You can also do cool LSD and 5th gear upgrades to the S54, the Torsen diff for the S54 is much better than the plate or viscous types found in the turbo box.

The main thing for me though is the weight penalty.

I'd only ever run a turbo box on a 3s-gte or a 2gr.

A turbo box on a 2gr is brilliant but i find myself reaching for a 6th gear on motorways plus as paul says the lsd isnt the best i would buy a 1.5 quaife if rebuilding my box and hunt down the rare camry gears and on a turbo is what it was made for that engine and its sudden torque lunge so overkill on a 3vz , buy a rev 3 box or later and get the mk3 LSD in there with 5th gear mod and never look back.

Interesting.

I know what you mean about weight. I picked up an S54 the other day and shoved it in the boot of the CamryVan, then went to pick up the E153 and thought I was stood on it.

Try picking up the mk3 box it's like did they fit any gears in here, from lite to heavy mk1 4age, mk3 ,mk2 na ,mk2 turbo.

From a traction point of view I can definitely recommend the S54 with the mk3 LSD. It is properly wet today and the grip the rear tyres have under acceleration is very very impressive. Stick your foot down when it's pointing straight and there is no fuss or hint of slip it just goes. Granted it has good tyres on but my old 3sfe non lsd would spin a wheel no problem in the wet, not this baby. And the 5th gear mod just makes motorways much more pleasant.

Hi
Now im in the progress to restore my s54 gearbox! I will go for a mk3 lsd, and replace the 5 gear. But I need a new pressure and friction plat!
I have a manual v6 flywheel and the gearbox is as you can read above, s54. So based on that I know I need a turbo pressure plat and a n/a or caldina friction plat! But where can I buy them??? any suggestion!?
