View Full Version : Honda CRX V8 Swap - Not Mine

One of my mates at work is currently undertaking this. I've suggested he's barmy and should sign up here but in his words "I don't do forums".

Anyways he bought a Honda CRX race car off ebay and then decided it was too slow and needed a bigger engine. So he ripped out the engine and set about trying to fit an Audi V8 lump into it.

The original plan was to cut the floor and put the Audi subframe in there and utilise the Audi suspension setup. That plan has changed slightly and it's now going to be a full spaceframed custom job using the Audi subframe at the rear and custom supension setup at the front.

The end goal is to have a V8 with supercharger installed at the rear running VEMS. He's hoping to get it running without the supercharger to race this year. Car is currently sitting on a custom welded jig with most of the floor cut out!

Photos :

Engine mounted on custom Audi subframe, note solid engine mounts! The subframe has been extended so that it will sit bang centre with equal length driveshafts.

I did suggest he might want to drive it n/a and get used to the power before he bolts the supercharger on there!!!

Progress update....

Floor, Arches, Bulkhead all gone, engine mounted on rear subframe and bolted onto rear spaceframe. The spaceframe will be welded in with some more supports and onto the rollcage and will have cross members down the side running up to the front bulkhead.
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/1635/img2012050400081.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/811/img2012050400081.jpg/)

The subframe will bolt to the spaceframe, there are machined alloy plates to weld on to the subframe rounded ends, steel collars will be welded into the spaceframe and then the alloy subframe can be bolted through the steel spaceframe. Exhaust is from a lotus esprit... might be a bit loud!
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5269/img2012050400083.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/213/img2012050400083.jpg/)

Shot of the rear on the jig, the gearbox looks quite low here but its a race car so shouldn't be going over any speedbumps!
http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/3451/img2012050400085.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/20/img2012050400085.jpg/)

Rear wishbones and driveshaft temporary mounting.
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/7610/img2012050400086.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/17/img2012050400086.jpg/)

Bloody big hole in the floor but you can at least sit in it now :icon_lol: The bulkhead will be going forward a foot or so....

Should be a progress update later on this week, the front suspension setup is getting assembled and then most of the front is getting cut out and spaceframed. Here's a shot to show what it looked like before it gets attacked with the saw :MK9523tn:

A Sizable update.... this represents quite a significant ammount of work, well pretty much every friday and weekend since the last update plus most evenings and two weeks of annual leave :eek2: :MK9523tn:

Engine and subframe now mounted and welded. The engine subframe assembly can be unbolted from the chassis.
http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/2788/img0018fxs.jpg

Box chassis, with centre tunnel welded in place. The body has been cut and welded so the whole body can be unbolted from the rolling chassis.

http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/8679/img0012mz.jpg

Front custom subframe now mounted in the front and welded in, the existing top mounts will be cut out.

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/1769/img0010wk.jpg

Fully custom made double wishbone setup, the track of this thing is massively wide and some mega wide arches will be going on to accomodate some serious rubber!

not so much an engine swop as a whole body exchange at least if the body rots and the chassis is sound you will get through an mot, i would cut every last bit of useles parts of the shell which it looks like he is this is going to be fantastic, hope he brings it along to a show or two.

Its a full on race-car tiggs so won't be used on the road. Pete weighed in what he cut out of the bodywork compared to what he's put in to the chassis and he's still ahead at the moment!

Aye, the frame should be drivable in its own right. The roll cage is going in there soon, once its got wheels it'll be ready to roll bar fuel, electrics, floor and brakes.

Well he was thinking about fiberglass but the option of dropping on a different body shell could be quite appealing!

He calculated the suspension geometry but the rest of it has been made up as its progressed. Originally he was planning on dropping the engine and sub frame in the rear but it kind of went from there to cutting the whole floor out to where we are today!

Steering column now welded in place, the roll cage is welded in and possibly the most complicated gear shift assembly ever has been fitted.

Ford escort steering rack, ford KA joint and I think its a peugeot steering wheel assembly.

http://imageshack.us/a/img834/3614/img0148zg.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img9/6334/img0147my.jpg

A lot of work still do do, steering rack, suspension & adjustable anti roll bar, remove body and final weld chassis, add floor pan and bulkheads, wiring, fuel, electrics brakes, extending body work, painting chassis and body work. And if all of this is finished before the racing season, add supercharger!!!

Bit of an update as it's been a while...

Fuel tank designed, welded and installed. The assembly behind the fuel tank is actually part of the anti roll bar, it's going to have some crazy pully and spring roll bar that will make it fully adjustable, i've never seen anything like it.
http://imageshack.us/a/img546/4051/img2013020800217l.jpg

Gear assembly finished with reverse lift collar.
http://imageshack.us/a/img713/2121/img2013020800216.jpg

Exhaust is done, it's a twin silencer per bank job, it looks totally amazing.
http://imageshack.us/a/img28/6872/img2013020800215.jpg
http://imageshack.us/a/img248/2203/img2013020800214.jpg

Body work is being built up, bear in mind the track of this thing is WIDE, it's going to look something like a DTM car when finished, you can sort of get the idea here.
http://imageshack.us/a/img341/5359/img2013020800212.jpg

Adjustable pedal box installed, and check out the interior welding, I can't believe how much work there is in every inch of this motor.

not really, but it's always good to keep a good inventory of parts like that.

the whole project looks pretty good. I'm currious what the weight of it is, but i don't want to diminish the work that has been done either.

I know he's cut out about 150kg of steel from the bodywork alone not sure what's gone in though, i'll ask Pete when I see him next, I think he's aiming for similar weight to before just with a V8 in the back. You have to remember it already had a roll cage and about 20kg of filler in those arches ;-)

I think the tank went in the front to balance the weight a bit and the coolant pipework is actually going to take up most of the centre tunnel.
