OK all, this has been coming for some time now and after a lot of badgering by the Chief Bodger, I am now starting my post for my Cosmos Blue Mk2 1998 Rev 5 which is being given a new heart in the shape of a 3VZ-FE from a pretty impressive donor.

A couple of things to say from the start, firstly a big thanks to Chris for providing the facilities and experience to do the swap, I was concentrating on getting the rather tired body sorted when the suggestion came up and TBH in the words of that infamous Welsh/Sicilian organised syndicate - the "Taffia" - it was an offer I couldn't refuse
:icon_tumbleweed:

Also big thanks to the members of TB particularly, Paul Woods, Adam H. etc for their advice and bits of metal to make the swap work.

Finally, the Two is known affectionately by wifey as "Vendetta" for the simple reason that she has a favourite nail polish in the distinct colour of the car which has this name. So let Project Vendetta kick off and hope she maintains a Premiership status like Swansea City will do by the summer.

I will add a few pics shortly of the stuff I have been gathering but a lot of it has been delivered to Bodgesport Towers where the Bodgemeister and 'er with the massive melons have been good enough to take things in for me.

Awesome mate, really excited about getting on with your swap for some reason, despite being slap bang in the middle of build #4!

Not to mention the 2GR swap which will be hot on the heels of build #5!

:-o

Me too Chris, looking forward to the build process as much as driving the motor afterwards.

My concern though, is that you are finding space for 4 cars [if you include the donor Cammy] and I want to clear the decks a bit as I'd like to give you plenty of breathing space to get on with the 2GR. That is why I have been stocking up on parts like a man possessed so that we can hit the ground running.

Torero

Ok so as mentioned I've been gathering parts, some not so exciting and some that might get the best TB'ers just a little aroused. The main ones are:

Aluminium racing radiator
Slimline radiator fan shrouds.
A set of engine lid fans
A Tubby engine lid [to house the fannys]

The lesser but equally important ones:

Woodsport Engine mount
Blanking plates [Courtesy of Adam H]
Induction cone
Induction heat shield
Quad electrode plugs
MAF Adapter
Belts and consumables etc.

I have also added a brake Cylinder stabiliser and some bling for the dash as we are going along.

I have just posted a thread in the "Wanted" section for a Rev 5 Gearbox so I can do the 5th gear extension prior to the engine being removed. Any help is appreciated, the link to the ad is HERE (http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?19854-Rev-5-Gearbox-with-LSD&p=252620#post252620).

I still think I'll get the fizz though :hyper:

TBH, the 2GR is overkill for the road. You can use all the performance about once. Just before you get pinched / die horribly :icon_lol:

Nice to know its there though.

A large part of the reason is Foxy's 3VZ powered SW20 so you're on the right track. More performance plus a better noise = optimal.

So today saw the arrival of some nice V6ness goodies, namely the 5th gear and 5th driven gear for the extension and a polybush kit for the gear selector courtesy of a Jap-Spec Performance GB on the OC.

Tomorrow I have taken the day off, so myself and Kelvin [Kayjay0_7] are off to collect my Rev 5 LSD gearbox and we'll fit the extended gears in the afternoon.

Build #4 should be out the way soon, won't be long till we're attacking this project!

What was the prices with the gears / box etc?

Me too, getting a real buzz just buying the kit and I'm almost there just some gaskets and pipes etc.

What was the prices with the gears / box etc?

The gears were £201 delivered [that Aaron's a good 'un, Chris] the bushes were £20 delivered and the gearbox is £200 collected from Luke at Pacific Works. The gearbox will be modded so that the fitting it to the 3VZ will be quicker and my original rev 5 will then be checked and sold on with the engine.

Any idea if there is anything that visually distinguishes a rev 5 box from the other revisions? Just to be sure that I am getting the right deal, even though Luke is a good bloke it's worth being prepared..

Torero

Collected the gearbox from Luke today and then fitted the 5th gear extension. Pretty impressed with Paul's 'how to' on this it was bang on the money.:eusa_clap:

A big thanks to Kelvin as well for driving the van and his help with the fitting.

Casing removed, old gears removed and new gears in place.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/27.jpg

Fitting the 5th Driven gear with the syncro hub and selector fork already in place.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/28.jpg

Finally all done, added some gasket compound and refitted the casing. Simples!!!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/29.jpg

All I have to do is get this in the II and ship it to the Bodgelair, I may have to take the passenger seat out or possibly remove the engine mount on the gearbox casing. Anyhows, I'll get it there somehow.

John!

One of my guys is in Egham / Staines this week on a course, and he's in a focus estate.

Shouldn't be a problem to fetch it back if you can get it to him before noon ish on Friday?

If its a goer I can ask him.

So long as its wrapped / not durty!!

:)

Torero
02-05-2012, 23:06
Thanks Chris, I'll let you know the plan is to get it to me by this weekend so this option could be very handy.

It has been drained of oil for about a week and when we brought it back all we did was to put some mop up paper in the drive shaft holes and that was it, not a mark in the van after an hours drive at least.

You guys are shitting me right!?

There's about 5 on eBay right this minute! All 3VZ by the look of them.

The 1MZ's will be getting long in the tooth soon, they should fill the void when the 3VZ's do start to run out.

Cos we killed them all.

Ok, just been passing a few emails between myself and Lyndon and i am now the proud owner of the ARBs and poly bushes and I have also gotten hold of a set of front ball joints from Bodgesport. :eusa_dance:

If anyone has any spare poly engine mounts [I'll confirm the rear dia shortly] then drop me a line.

I also am looking for a set of Eibach lowering springs and Koni adjustable inserts, I'll post this in the wanted section before I go any further. :fingersx:

For Engine mounts I went with the Kirkasaurus ones and they are excellent quality and very cheap, engine is as solid as a rock and no vibration is transmitted into the cabin seeing as the 3VZ is such a smooth running engine

And following on from those pics, this is how it all started this morning at the Bodgelair.

Firstly we set about the Cammy with a very strange tool...................who was holding an angle grinder at the time.:icon_lol:

Then after much unclipping, unbolting, cutting, drinking of coffee we lifted the engine out.

Had such great weekend, didn't stop chatting and laughing and one of the highlights was myself and Chris doing our version of Jim and Twiggy on the Royle Family dancing to 'Mambo No 5'.

Two guys with arse cracks showing looking like dads dancing. It was a sight to behold, I don't think Chris' wife will ever recover..

Despite the gloomy wet weather and some royal stuff going on, John and I made some good progress in getting the engine ready.

This engine has only done 120k miles, and aside from the usual cam cover oil leaks it's not too bad at all! The insides are near immaculate!

Front bank....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/06/27.jpg

Rear bank....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/06/28.jpg

Cam covers cleaned inside and out, wire brushed and baby wiped!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/06/29.jpg

Plenum ready for some paint!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/06/30.jpg

And we kinda left it there really!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/06/31.jpg

John has taken some bits home to prep, I'm in charge of cleaning the rest of the engine down and painting the bits we have already cleaned.

Still got the cam belt to change, and there may be an oil leak on the oil pump / front crank housing, but we will dismantle and inspect when we get down that far.

Next visit we should be able to get everything reassembled and think about fitting the clutch etc.

More soon folks!

Chris & John (apprentice bodger!)

Are you guys not changing the head gaskets then? It's the primary weak spot on 3vz engines

cdwood2010
03-06-2012, 23:24
Hi Paul!

We discussed it, but as with the last three builds we gave the car a good spanking and there's nothing wrong with the engine.

I know it's been stressed time and again that it's a really really good idea to do them while the engine is out, but worst case scenario we will revisit if the need arises.

After all, this is johns weekend cruiser, not a track day toy!

Oh, and this is a BodgeSport production after all!

Chris.

Got a spare set if you want them CW. Just ebay jobbies but surely better than leaving ones on that have done 120k? Having driven a camry 2500 miles with knackered ones i would say there is nothing quite as frustrating as having such a good engine and not being able to drive it, having to refill the coolant twice a day after nursing it along at 60... You know it makes sense :-)

get them changed as 10 0r 700 miles down the road you just dont know when there going to go, project deer hunter or shoot yourself in the head maybe do them now and they should last another 120 thou.

then drive it like you stole it.

cdwood2010
04-06-2012, 02:34
My logic on this is that if I had just bought a Camry and I was driving it around, I wouldn't suddenly replace the head gaskets because I thought they might go anytime.

If you lived your life like that you wouldn't leave the house just in case you got hit by a bus!

At the end of the day though it's johns build, so rest assured we will discuss!

But I really do appreciate the advice guys!

Chris.

Paul Woods
04-06-2012, 08:27
Your theory is sound Chris, however i've taken apart literally hundreds of 3vz engines with mileages ranging from 40k to 150k, not a single one of them didn't have a gasket defect.

Toyota dropped a bollock on the 3vz gaskets, something went wrong on assembly, quite what i don't know, maybe it was gasket quality or the torque rating, but every gaskets fire ring is so badly distorted that they bend inwards towards the cylinder bore, you can put money on it, the fire rings on them ALL are distorted, some so visibly it's almost comical.

This doesn't mean the gasket has blown, as you say you can drive it around still in the Camry without issue, but the cooling system in a Camry is under a lot less stress than in an Mr2, it's mated to an Auto gearbox with lazy revving and you could almost nurse a HG for years in one. In an Mr2, we're ragging the guts off it, higher engine bay temps etc... it all helps accelerate the problem. So while i would agree, why change gaskets when they aren't blown, it's a ticking timebomb waiting to go, and believe me mate, changing them in situ is your worst nightmare, people sell Camrys rather than have to do the gaskets in situ, somewhat easier than an Mr2 as well!

They also suffer bad block corrosion around the fire ring lip, much like the 4age does, i do a full stripdown and have the block decked, heads skimmed and the best quality gasket money can buy, usually Payen or in a more tuned application Ferriday bi metallic.

I'm not preaching, just trying to help steer your ship away from the rocks when i know there's a storm coming.

With any luck it will be perfectly fine though, i personally don't have that luxury, warranty and my rep demand it's done, homebuilds are different though in that respect, but i really don't see the point in scrimping in this area given the difficulty of replacing it afterwards.

Another must do is the big end shells, or at least inspect them, again i've yet to see one that didn't have a shell on its way out, might have 20k left on it, or 100 miles... replace!

Please know my words are meant in the kindest possible way.

Hi Paul,

Points taken, I will have a chat with John.

And for the record your advice and guidance is always welcomed and appreciated. Only a complete nutter would question your expertise.

This car is Johns pride and joy, and whilst I'm prepared to take the risk on my round town hooner, it makes sense to put a bit of effort in on this build!

Thanks mate!

chris did you reinforce the two front engine mount holes on the s54 gearbox? damn the git that didnt return my tools i used to have a set of helicoil and tap that i would send by post so you could helicoil and strengthen the two front mount bolt holes and then use high strength loctite after. stops the threads stripping out which is regular.

Cheers Guys, some really ace advice and I think I'd be a right bellend to ignore this particularly what Paul has said about the bad block corrosion around the fire ring lip.

I meant to discuss the water pump and thermostat with Chris but as the build is plodding along at a pace that easily suits us both I never got round to mentioning it, so my bad.

I'll chat to Chris over the next couple of days as it's his time and resources that really need to be factored in as the build is being done as a favour with me as the monkey.

Not a problem John.

I can get the heads off and take them to my local machine shop. Probably looking at £60 to plane the heads, I've got a set of head gaskets, and we will probably need plenum / inlet and inlet / head gaskets.

Water pump - yes if you want to spend on one then it's an easy swap.

Other questions (and this is where it gets slippery) valves / guides / seats etc, big end / mains / cam seals / block decked and painted etc etc.

Once you start it's really easy to end up doing the lot. I'm still of the opinion that the engine was fine as it was, so I guess it's down to budget / patience etc.

I can fit in around whatever you fancy doing.

heads will deffo need skim, so yes get that done, and u have new head gaskets, so all good there,
Inlet and exhaust gaskets if not damaged can be re-used as they are steel, unless u have new ones kicking round if which case use new ones,.
valves and guides. hmm..
well u will have to take valves out to get heads skimmed and washed properly, so replace the valve stem seals, the cam seals can be done when u put cams back in, but you will have to put valves back in so mark or bag the valves with theire individual retainers , springs, washers etc, and number them againse the chambers so dont get them mixed up, once u refit valves and cams u will need to double check clearences with a feeler gauge to make sure everything is within tolerence..

big end seals etc will need similar work , I didn't do those on mine.. but have a manual to help do so if needed and I will deffinetly be doing on my new build so will learn as I go along..
as for the engine, its always a gamble, the engine could be mint , and have been driven really sensibly, u just don't know for sure..
I did a top end build on mine and didnt touch bottom end, seems to go well and is fine so far.. putting on the rollers next week so will see how well it is..lol

From experience on 3vzs I've always found the block needs decking rather than a head skim, which does require a full strip to bare block to do, I guess it all boils down to that old phrase , do it once do it properly.

Every single 3vz I do gets a full strip, deck and rebuild with every seal and bearing renewed, it really is the only way to ensure a long trouble free life.

and I 100% agree with you mate,
only problem is most us home builders havent the access to tools, workshops etc and we usually want the engine in and going asap, thats why we usually come and bug you for your services, as once car is left in your care we can just sit biting our nails waiting to pick it up and drive,, but if we start building we just want it going asap.. so not many have the patience to do everything, and not just the patience but the know how either..

Yeah, with BBQ I just wanted it running and driving!

:)

I was rather the same , but I wasn't driving at the time so , I decided to spend my time and do what I could.. in total I spent a month from gutting camry to having the 2 running, but if I totalled the amount of hours I spent it probably equals to 5 days..

I can understand the desire to get it swapped and driving quickly, i just know if i did that i'd have a queue of cars all coming back to me at some point and unhappy owners.

I guess homebuilds have entirely different rules because you aren't paying someone to make it right. I can see how it would be tempting to just lob the engine into the Mr2 straight out of the Camry.

That was literally the case with BBQ - we took the 2.0 out and put the V6 back in in the same day as i recall.

For my own car i really wouldnt care - actually thats probably quite obvious - but as this is Johns build i would be leading him astray. If my car breaks down i just push it back in the garage and fix it!

Come on Chris, admit it, you love painting and cleaning now don't you? That gearbox is beautiful!

Not really. I'm way too impatient!

I was showing John the engine in The Black on Sunday and it was only then I noticed how stinking oily filthy that engine is! It doesn't seem to affect the joy factor!

Johns engine looks quite nice though, and it was incredibly sweet before we took it out of the now dead Cammy. Hoping it will do him proud.

He was near giddy over how the gearbox has turned out. Needs a quick splash of lacquer before we fit it, but it should look quite tasty in the engine bay.

It's getting a bit worried now with how familiar I'm becoming with these engines. Not that im by any means an expert. And a short visit with The Dark Lord last week revealed yet more nuggets of knowledge! Happy times!

The thing that makes me the most pleased though is that I'm able to put this knowledge to good use helping other TB'ers!

Plenty of people helped me and Fatprick when we built JapScrap, so it's nice to pass the kindness on.

Got some more news too, will update you all later.....

Thanks for all the help Chris, it really is coming along a treat.

I am almost complete on the parts gathering process and after a chat with Patrick [Headache] I am looking at silicon hoses for the cooling, fuel and vacuum system as well. Graeme [GTech] has supplied me with a polished shield for the engine lid fan cover so the engine bay should look very blingy when finished.

But what I'm really looking forward to is the customary engine bay shot with me standing in the space before the 3VZ goes in.:jump:

Anyway, some more pretty pictures of gearboxes,

Had a busy day, didn't get in the garage until late this evening.

Managed to get a bit of tidying up done, and more importantly start making some space to work!

Anyway, decided that it was time the gearbox got fitted:-

Still got a few bits to bolt back on, TB and suchlike. Not sure which starter we are using, but I have a selection! Probably pull the one from the 2.0.

I also need to strip back the loom. I take these down to the wire up to the plastic casing over the bell housing. Two reasons:-

1) they're fecking dirty oily filthy
2) I like to pick my own route into the boot and it's much easier with the wires uncased. I usually re-bind them afterwards. Much neater.

I'm also going to cap the spare wires for the steering pump and aircon. It looks much neater than dangling plugs!

Despite best endeavours we ended up behind schedule, so no startup vid tonight I'm afraid. We found a gremlin in the engine bay that proved quite annoying.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/257.jpg

Then we got the crazy idea in our heads to move the engine bay fuse box.....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/258.jpg

Surprisingly easy to do but we had to remove every last wire from the fuse box and then feed it through into the boot.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/259.jpg

It actually looks quite good and probably worth the effort.

After some more fettling we finally got the engine into the engine bay.

Guys guys guys..... The fusebox in the boot is stuff legends are made of but is a far easier/cleaner/neater way to do it..

- remove p/s exterior vent and rubber
- remove sill trim
- peel back carpet & disconnect p/s loom
- feed back into engine bay
- 2" hole saw into cabin behind vent rubber (prevent corrosion)
- feed the loom down the p/s rear 1/4 cavity, past the fuel filler and through the 2" hole
- reconnect!

Just so you know :)

cdwood2010
28-07-2012, 19:08
Yeah we fiddled with a lot tiggs!

I had narrowed it down to the COR or EFi, and we tested the COR and it was fine.

We started to review the fuse box connections and because we had dismantled the fuse box to move it into the boot, I had managed to 180 the pins because my iPhone took the picture upside down. It was only the plastic L peg inside the fuse box that gave it away.

Back on point now!

So John went home on the train!

But the great news is that as you can see from the pics, the car is finished and back together. I literally have the wheels to put back on and put it back on the floor.

Just thought I'd show a few shots of what we changed to make the ride better and to show the hard work that has gone into the build.

As Chris said we managed to fit my new radiator, a 60mm racing aluminium one and a set of twin slimline fans. The lot weighed less that the single fan that was originally fitted and can (allegedly) reduce engine temps by up to 6 degrees.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/08/98.jpg

We replaced the rear ball joints and all the rear bushes with Prothane ones I had from Peter at SBits and got the rear Whiteline ARBs fitted that I got from Lyndon (Nod) off Project Winky.

Also got a chance to clean up the sub frame and under boot heat shield

Thanks Mike, I completely agree but the car was in need of some tlc and this was the opportunity to do it.

I bought the 2 from a guy who worked in Brighton for 2 years and it had suffered from some atmospheric corrosion. Luckily the undertrays protected 2/3rds or the car and a sump oil leak at some point had sprayed the chassis rails and lower engine bay this effectively 'Waxoyled' it so we spent around 8 hours extra I reckon on just undoing seized or difficult bolts and cleaning it. The exhaust literally crumbled like a biscuit as we took it off and the heat shield on the boot broke in bits but underneath had a good clean and is as normal.

This is what we did with a lot of the bolts that were replaced. The man himself doin' a little bit of bump 'n' grind.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/08/103.jpg

The next task is to underseal and rust proof the underside and then do the front suspension components, so I am getting there.

That's part of the reason I replaced all the rubber bushes as the opportunity was there but I am pleased that I did it. I'd also like to thanks Chris and his wife, the big fella put a lot of effort and his own time into this and nothing fazed him and all along we had a good laugh which was probbly helped by a lot of Magners being drunk. His wife is amazing and looked after me constantly with bacon sarnies and dinner, I really can't thank them both enough.

Anways, I'll bring Vendetta to JAE, there is a way to go with the body work but the biggest step is over. I feel quite chuffed that I pretty much rescued this rev 5 from being broken for parts and now it's back on the road with a new growl.

None whatsoever, Chris. Took it for a short run tonight (still got the smile on my face) but there was some water on the floor when I moved it. Looks like it's from one of the 2 pipes that run over the gearbox and it looks as if just nipping up the jubilee clip will be sufficient. I'll keep an eye on it but other than that it's spot on matey

Having a mare at the moment Pat with location and brackets. I think I'm going to have to order some 90 degree barbed/BSPT elbows as the tube is kinking when turning sharp into the catch can at the point where the 2 cam breather hoses fit to the tee. As I am fitting it to the rear firewall, one of the catch can outlets gets turned back into the engine bay if I try to address the kinking issue, so I'm going to mess around with some fittings this weekend to try and correct this.

It's a right PITA being a perfectionist:eusa_doh:

John was told by someone else that if the car originally had a cat, it had to have one for the mot.

So a little more of an update, I was lucky enough to get hold of a set of Eibach spring in excellent condition (only 3k miles) but I wanted to get some Koni inserts which unfortunately didn't happen as when the seller went to package them he found they were leaking. I appreciated the heads up, far better than finding out when I they arrived with me so I set about sourcing some more but got sidetracked and ended up buying these puppies (the ones on the left that is :icon_biggrin: some BC Coilovers that have only done 8k miles and are in great condition c/w adjustable top mounts and spnanners.

So I have a nearly new set of Eibach Pro springs sitting around doing nothing....anyone interested???

So posting a bit later than expected after making my way down to Pat's place a week or two back.

After fitting new wheels and tyres, the next stage was suspension, I managed to get lucky and picked up a set of BC Coilovers, 4KG spring rates so a bit softer and a little kinder on the roads. When we took the old shocks off the Front O/S topmount was fubar'd so at this stage we knew that the upgrade would make a difference.

The difference is night and day on the ride quality, I was apprehensive about coilovers as I felt they are more for track use but I have had several conversations and decided to go for them and now I'm absolutely chuffed. I think I'll drop the ride height a little more but I want to drive it a little more as I chose a softer setting but I think I'd like to set it a little harder first.

These are the front ones.

So have done a little more over the past few weeks. Towards the end of July I was at the Bodgelair and enjoyed a barbie with Chris and Jools and plenty of Magners , the next day we fitted some Rogue engine lid fans which I'm in the process of wiring in (pics to follow) and messed around with a few things mainly a smaller number plate.

and a brake stopper, which is custom made to fit over the ABS pump/plumbing which makes a noticeable difference to the feel and response of the pedal.

I had some time to myself this week and decided to do something useful. I ordered some Dynamat sound proofing from Fleabay and got the lightweight version which is 15% lighter but also 15% less effective than the silver version and fitted it in the passenger foorwell as I had some Rev 1 luxury carpet from Patrick so I figured I'd give it a try.

This is the stuff

So I ripped the old carpet out and happily the floor pan was nice and solid and free of surprises.

Then I fitted it, quite easy and not too fiddly, just awkward getting in and out of the cabin after being bent double for half an hour. The finished result

and finally the carpet

Personally I don't understand the appeal of adding weight and losing the v6 soundtrack. .
TBH Az, I am preoccupied with weight saving, I've fitted a set of Ganador mirrors which are half the weight of stock, the wheels are far lighter, the coilovers save a few kgs, the alloy rad and fan shroud is the weight of the front fan alone and all the engine bay fans have gone as well to be replaced with engine lid fans.

We use this as a weekend car and tend to spend a lot of time travelling, the cabin soundproofing eliminates a lot of road/atmospheric noise and I think it only adds about 4k in total. I've even got some self ahesive felt strips to line the contact faces of the dash plastics so that it stops the annoying squeaking. It makes it much more comfortable as a tourer and you're less tired getting out of it. The V6 soundtrack however, doesn't go away that's why it's called the 'loud pedal' :icon_wink:

Very nice John, is the noise level difference that noticeable?

Cheers Chris

I can't really comment on the difference as it's only the passenger side and I need to run it on on a motorway really to asses the difference. I'll hopefully do that before JAE and report back.

I have to say that the front n/s coilover 'bottomed out' several times when just running around the rubbish roads in London but since fitting the front ARB, ball joints, polybushes and drop links it is amazing and it now doesn't even rub on the arch liners which I used to have on the odd occassion after the wheels were fitted.I think it's only the track rod ends to be changed and then everything under the car is new :icon_cool:

Keep an eye on them as I won mine as a complete set for £103 delivered. They tend to put auctions on that occassionally end at silly times like 10am and I put a cheeky bid on and won.:eusa_dance: The kit is top quality and light as can be, a worthwhile upgrade particlarly as the V6 lump can get hot when stuck in traffic.

They have some twin fan shrouds on at the moment, well worth trying for.

So a bit more of an update to the build thread. With the V6 monster in the engine bay I wanted to get some decent stopping power as I've been suffering from the usual sticking pistons (ooeeeerr!!!) so I've set about replacing all the calipers.

First the fronts, a little visit down to Patrick to fit these:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/165.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Brakes_6a_zpsc7c40f59.jpg.html)

and after getting a thou machined off the disks, they now look like this :eusa_clap:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/167.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Brakes_3_zps31774e34.jpg.html)

They look amazing and really fit in well with the 17" wheels and as they had Yellowstuffs on the front, I decided to replace the even worse rears thanks to a set of decent calipers from Gavin (GavsDavs) and I got a full Bigg Red repair kit which included stainless steel pistons and new bleed valves, so hopefullythese will be good for ten years. After a coat of Hammerite they were looking the part.

and then fitted with some more Yellowstuff pads.

Some great work by Patrick in refurbing the calipers and fitting them, just need to get them 'run in' now, so plenty of reason to take her out now.

With the MOT looming I needed to fix a dodgy part of the drivers side floor. It was only a small area but was where one of the bolts that holds the drivers seat is fixed so it needed to be done, however the car had nothing much else body wise that needed attention.

All cleaned up, welded and plated.

This was then covered with Dynamat soundproofing.

Now for some pretty awesome exhaust work. I've posted this as another thread as it's worthsharing with others.

Chris and myself worked well into the small hours last year to get my exhaust fitted with a cat using some ingenuity, scrap tube, lots of welding rods and a few gallons of Magners. This resulted in an MOT pass, only to find that the cat wasn't required. As the year as gone on the pipe has suffered slightly being quite vocal on the way to JAE and pretty much found that it was blowing around the downpipe and up at the manifold.

TBH I think I expected to much to fab this in a small space and all respect to Chris he did the best he could with what was available but I needed something new. So I decided to do something a bit different, something I wanted to do some time back and had gone into detail with Peebs to see if it could be done.

After a chat to Patrick (Neckbrace) I decided to with a 57mm downpipe that he would fab up and change the back box as (I thought) it was a bit too loud. I soon found out that I had some loose manifold nuts which was why it was so loud but had already completed something a bit different, the new back box.

The downpipe and flexis in situ being sized up.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/182.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Downpipe_3_zps38881802.jpg.html)

The downpipe, pretty arty if you ask me and looks awesome fitted..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/184.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Downpipe_1_zpsf126767d.jpg.html)

This has been titanium wrapped and looks the dogs bollocks in place but the best is yet to come.

I love listening to the sound of the supercars driving around London, the specific note they give is often a result of the bypass valves that open up when you thrash the loud pedal from low revs. The valve allows exhaust gasses to by pass the back box and gives free flowing thrust through the tail pipes, hence 4 tail pipes on the more exotic cars. The net result is extra thrust and a trouser wetting roar that is very distinctive to each marque. So I managed to get an automatic butterfly valve from eBay complete with electronic controller and Patrick (Headwind) came up with a pretty shit hot design which he fabbed up using a tubby back box.

This is a shot of the valve in place, as you can see the actuator is at the base and the y pipe traverses the back box at the top but when the valve is shut, the gases run straight through the muffler. This is also a good image of the electronic actuator as well.

...and other side.

This is how the outgoing valve end is seam welded into the tail pipe.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/187.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Exhaust_4_zps261c1e1c.jpg.html)

...and another angle.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/188.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Exhaust_1_zpsf1197a15.jpg.html)

The sound is pretty amazing and the amount the valve can be opened is regulated so it can be remotely operated to 'tune' the sound a little louder or quieter. Even though this is a quieter one than the Fujitsubo we removed (and I must admit I loved the sound on that but when the down pipe was failing it was way too loud), it still slightly louder than stock as normally the Turbo muffles part of the sound but the growl from a standing start is quality and not the usual 'Boy Racer' drainpipe style boom that I dislike so much, it is much more in line with that supercar sound.

The old Fujitsubo Jasma ..... I really did like this.

Brian (BriWeekes) also has one fitted on his Ferrari rep with a bigger exhaust for more effect but I'm thrilled with this and the engine powers me so much more smoothly and quietly......until I open the valve of course. TBH you couldn't drive for long with it open but it's so cool off the mark.

I'll add some more shots and a vdeo a little later on.

On a side note are you planning on selling that fujitsubo at all ?

He's pretty versatile to say the least, Les.

Unfortunately the Fujistsubo went to someone else on TB sorry mate.

I do have another rear box, Janspeed I think. Not quite as sexy as the Fubi but not bad. Also got a couple of N/A boxes floating about. Both cheap.

PM me if you fancy.

http://m.ebay.com/itm/171161348692?nav=SEARCH&sbk=1Yes that's it and it should have a solenoid valve on the base so it can be manually switched. Mine actually came with a 'Y' Pipe and also has a controller that is in the boot that operates with a remote key fob. This means the amount the butterfly opens can be controlled so the sound can be moderated.

Although this way it doesn't just switch on or off there is a delay of around 3-4 seconds.

:-) I must admit I loved the sound of the Fubi Chris and I was quite pissed to see it going but I wouldn't have wanted to butcher such a good exhaust as we were still experimenting with it. At least it went to a good home with Jayson and it's still within the TB fold.

On the other hand with the valve fully opened there is no way I could have driven more than a few metres with the Fubo before my ears started bleeding.

I'm interested to see how this works....

I have an Audi TT 3.2 DSG rear can sat in my garage which is 'similar' though the butterfly valve is vacuum actuated; which is the route I will probably go with the V8.

This is something I wouldn't mind doing in the future but there's far too many things on the go at the moment.

So almost a year to the day and I haven't updated so time to show the latest little modification.

So I haven't updated for some time but there are quite few changes and I'm really pleased, I've bonded a lot with the car over the Autumn and want to show my latest little modification.

To start, I got this adapter from Kelvin (Kayjay0_7)at a bargain price.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2014/11/95.jpg (http://s1012.photobucket.com/user/Torero26/media/Apexi_1_zpsa86ae53d.jpg.html)

I then proceeded to spend quite few pennies on one of these, not cheap but then again you get what you pay for.

Finally, fitted in the engine bay. Great sound, very pleased with this.

That car is great. The exhaust valve is amazing. Back when you guys started it, I was knee deep in my own build and watching this thread gave me pieces of the puzzle to keep going. You guys have done pretty much everything on that car. After a year of running it, the temps staying cool, no Head Gasket worries? Any reappearing oil leaks?

I agree, the car looks fantastic, love the new wheels. I'm of the view more is less when it comes to bodywork and wheels. I would probably go for a polished rim and matt silver centres so the attention is on the bodywork and that lovely colour. If you ever decide to sell let me know first ;-)

We have come a long way since the first picture where that unsightly lump was on the engine hoist but without him it wouldn't have happened. but to answer I haven't had a single issue with oil or water leakage, I even had a plastic bag block my rad during a very hot summer day and it still didn't overheat so all in all very pleased and as Chris mentioned earlier the engine pulls like a train and has a power delivery that is as smooth as snakeshit.

Thanks Si, it's always a tough choice trying to get it right first time but now I've changed the the wheels and added the spoiler I'm made up. Unsure at the moment about the wheel centres as they are in very good nick and I'd don't really want to split them to do the centres. I know I could get them done without splitting but let me see how I feel after the winter.

If you ever decide to sell let me know first ;-) You'll be the first to know
