OK guys I thought I would finally start my own thread for my V6 swap.

Some info about my MR2: its a 1990 GT hardtop, imported from Japan, spend most of its life on the track over there so its had a hard life, when I got it they removed the cusco roll cage wasn't happy about that but it was so it could be driven on australian roads.
It came with some nice mods like a APEXi 3.5" exhasut, SARD analyse ECU, Tein Type HA coil overs, TRD plug leads, TRD clutch and holes in the floor where my roll cage used to be
My mods that I've done: not much, a new cold air intake, custom 3" dump pipe and got the CT26 hi-flowed with a lot larger compressor wheel and the ceramic shaft and turbine wheel replaced with steel items.

Just letting everyone know that this swap/build will most likely be going at snail pace due to my funds being spent else where for example my house, I'm building a new house I'm excited can't wait to move in I wish they would hurry up and start building it. :icon_mad:

So I got the land all set and got my shed built so I can make a start on my MR2.
About 2 weeks ago I moved my baby in her new home from the in-laws shed to my shed, and since then I moved all my stuff into my shed like car parts and furniture.

This weekend I got a bit productive and removed the 3SGTE out so I can get a bit more body work done, clean out the engine bay and get it resprayed with the rest of the car.

OK enough talking now, here are some pics...

We both got a MKIV 1997 1mz-fe dude :)

Got lucky and got both a M/T as an A/T Ecu. Guess you wont be using the original ECU are you?

Gonna follow your project.

Dont remember seeing a 1mz turbo around here, so cant wait to see where this is going! Good luck with the swap! What are you're power goals btw?

Yeah I'm not going to use the factory ecu (didn't get on anyway), I'll be using a haltech ecu and making a whole new engine harness from scratch.
Also I'll be converting my cable speedo to a electric one, I,already got a new cluster with connectors to,go,with it, all I need now is the sender unit.

the only turbo 1mz I can think of on TB is the one tristan from WTFauto, I think his name on here was WTFauto, fully built 1mz with a impressive sequential twin turbo setup, he made from memory 520rwhp on 20psi of boost.

So yeah my goal is to hit the 500hp range and I'll be happy.

I bought a gen2 cluster, going to convert the tacho so it will understand the V6 signal. speed signal you sould be able to get from your gearbox.

I can't get a signal til I put in a later model speed sensor in, my mr2 is a gen1 so its just got a cable that goes between the gearbox and cluster, I think with the aftermarket ecu i'm using I won't need to modify the tacho I think, I think you modify the the tacho output on the ecu to the cluster.

I'm currently talking to Tighe Cams (Located in Brisbane) about regrinding the 1MZ cams to a better profile. So far they have quoted approx $450 to do all four cams, but I need to send my spares off to them so they can measure how much can be removed and what kind of profile can be ground. If your interested in this, shoot me a PM.

Well....... It's a very very very .... very small world...

I was looking to relocate to Brissy a couple of years ago and the company i work for (the aussie branch) is dead opposite Tighe Cams... (Company called FLEXICON). Anyway, I've had a ride in the bosses Caterham and fuck me is that thing BRUTAL!!!

you can also use the 2mz and 3mz cams for a 1 and 2mm extra lift.

I'd love to see some 276 degree cams with 11mm lift and some freaking turbo or ITB setup!! let's see how much horses these engines realy can make!!
Most of the turbo V6 projects used and where limited by stock cams if i remember correctly so i'd love to see what a great set of cams can do!

(276 with 11mm lift is maby a bit overdone, but you get the point)

I'm realy subscribed to your project man. Intresting stuff going on here!

I'm in Mackay in queensland, yeah I'm interested in cams, I have been looking around but not just serious yet, tristan from wtfauto is using 2mz inlet cams and I think the 1mz exhauat cam still, hes making over 500hp.
But if its around $450 to redo the cams sounds good, I'd like to see how they go...

Would probably be very hard to get 3mz and 2mz cams to replace your 1mz's for $450.

Just a little update, haven't done anymore work as I just came back from my holiday down at the Gold Coast 22hr drive there and back, glad I didn't have any issues with the aristo this time.
But I did get a lot of parts for my mr2 mainly body parts, its a rev1 so I got some rev3 tail lights, rev3 wing (you may already see fitted in the pics), rev3 antenna, a larger 98 turbo brake master cylinder (for when I do a larger brake upgrade), a new throttle cable (at the moment I have a aftermarket universal cable), new LHF fender under liner but at the moment having trouble getting a RHF liner and its the one i really need, +94 rear brake calipers and some other stuff

plan to get soon RX8 front brake rotors to go on the rear for rear brake upgrade.

do tell about the rear brake upgrade as us nutter mk1 owners that have upgraded to turbo mk2 rear and volkswagon g60 disk are always looking at improving our rear braking.

Sorry for the late reply, been busy working and getting my house started in its build process (I got foundations now :icon_mrgreen: then a slab soon to come after) anyways yeah with the rear brake upgrade I'm doing, I'll be using +94 MR2 turbo rear calipers then using a bracket from this website "http://www.deltav.com.au/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=8&category_id=2&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=5&vmcchk=1&Itemid=5" then a DBA front slotted disc for a RX8 on the rear of the MR2 I'm pretty sure these discs are 323mm diameter.
I'd like to use a better rear caliper but you'll most likely loose the handbrake, but I've seen many SW20 with this rear setup so must do the job ok and is very well priced.

For my front brake I'll be using probably skyline 4 piston calipers (grinding off the nissan lettering off and getting toyota painted on of course) with a bracket from the above link and some DBA slotted discs to match.

Hey man, nah not much has been done, I have been busy with house stuff, Now I got floors, walls and a roof now, but still a long way away before I can get to live in it.

But for my MR2 I did manage to get to it last weekend and put it up fully on chassis stands and started taking the front end apart, wipe all the dust off her and put a car cover on, If i get enough motivation this weekend I might pull the steering rack out and reco it, its got a leak and the rack ends and tie rod ends are worn but the wet season has come which makes me lazy to leave the house.

Sorry nothing big yet, only done some sanding and priming on the body work nothing engine yet, also I have been in contact with tristan from WTFauto in Perth one getting a engine mount made for me, from what I heard its gonna be CNC'd.
Besides that I have been still mainly been focused on my house being built, will keep you all updated when I start getting more serious and get the ball rolling.

Ok just a little update, still not much progress with my MR2, now my house is coming along nicely but now I've also started a new project that is gonna be on a budget built along with my MR2, I have bought a 1994 3 door RAV4 for $300 aussie dollars
I thought it was a waste taking the 3SGTE out of my MR2 and just have it sitting on the floor of my shed, so the plan now is to put it in the RAV and have some fun with it, I'll will put updates of its progress on this thread also.

Yeah the 3s-gte will go into that fairly easily, just make sure you do something with those rear diff hangers, they won't take 3s-gte abuse, i had to build a custom carrier for it with poly inserts to stop the diff trying to come through the floor :)

I'm quite excited doing the conversation to the RAV, it's had a hard life with 335,000 km on the clock and was abandoned at a rental property, has clear signs that it has been driven on the beach with all the bolts on the suspension have rusted but no rust on the body which I'm happy about, its also needs a rear door as its got a big crack, looks like the spare tyre must put some stress on the sheet metal on the rear door.

Any videos paul of your rav?, I read your thread awhile ago but your weren't finished, looks like I'll have to catch up.

Ok I got an update for MR2, I got in contact with WTFauto about the engine mount, no progress has been made as his clients with MR2 V6 conversions have pulled out and so I have kindly pulled out as well, I would take my car there but they are literally on the other side of the country, so now my plan is to get one of Paul's 1MZ mounts in a month or so once my credit card has recovered

bigpitty1
10-03-2012, 12:54
Rav4 update, I have been doing some shopping at the local wreckers, I have been gathering parts to do a rear disc brake conversion on the rav, with the extra power from the 3sgte thought I might upgrade the stopping power, all I need now is some new slotted rotors and new pads for it to be complete, will post pics once done.

hmmmmm
10-03-2012, 16:46
Looking at pauls vids, the brakes were kinda shite.. How are the front ones holding up though? Wont the balance be way off when doing a rear disk conversion incl upgraded rotors and pads?

bigpitty1
11-03-2012, 08:41
I'm just getting the rear brakes off a 98 rav4, in 98 is when the rear brakes changed from drum to disc so I don't think the balance would be affected much or if at all, main purpose of going disc is I think they will hold up better in rallys, I also want to upgrade the single piston calipers on the front as well, it may receive the MR2's twin piston calipers, thought I might recycle them as the rav is a budget build...

snowtigger
11-03-2012, 12:21
If mr2 mk1 fit you maybe able to use the celica st185 big piston caliper or it couldbe mk2 and use them.

bigpitty1
13-03-2012, 13:21
I got a mk2 so I'll just use those calipers, but I think the discs like the rav are a lot thinner than the MR2 but have a larger diameter

bigpitty1
21-05-2012, 15:40
Its been a while since I've done an update been a bit busy but my house is coming to completion from being built and I should be getting the keys this week and try to move in this weekend but I got a bucks party so I'll probably end up drunk and move in hangover, but can't wait to finally move out of the inlaws

I got more progress with my MR2 by getting one of Paul's engine mounts to give me some motivation and do more to it, I guess it worked because I ended up sanding the passenger door and ready to be primed this weekend that has passed, I'm really loving the engine mount Paul, looks so well made but it must of had a hard trip on the way here, the paint has been knocked off the corners and the box and bubble wrap all shredded, so the box was put into a A4 snap lock plastic bag and fully taped up to keep the mount in the box, but here is a pic, mount is still in good condition.
All I need to do now is try to same some money so I can build this 1MZ so it can be mounted.
http://img838.imageshack.us/img838/2011/20120520153253.jpg

I got some updates for the RAV4 as well, I got a new stainless steel turbo manifold for the 3SGTE that came out of my MR2 because before it was imported from japan it was a track car all of its life and the fella that owned it before me drilled the standard manifold and put a spark plug in there which I'm guessing was for some sort of anti lag, but he must of drilled in the wrong spot because when I got the turbo hi flowed awhile back I could see he drilled in between the 2 sections of the manifold be cause the turbo is a CT26 dual entry turbo and the spark plug was not actually exposed to the exhaust pathway itself so a bolt was but in that hole and he redrilled, when I got my MR2 the spark plug was broken off and used as a plug, so I guess in time the manifold would crack so the new manifold will come in handy and I only bought it for $50 aussie dollars.
I also started on some body work and started sanding it down and fixed up some rust I found in the roof near the rear door, thats pretty much all I got up too for now, hopefully once I've fully moved in and settled in my house I can get some real work done..

Hey tiguy, not much has been done on my MR2, only some sanding and priming here and there, same goes with the rav4.
Still stuck doing house stuff, I'm having phone and internet issues, life seems so hard without internet haha :frown:
Still no grass, the yard is nearly fenced off, only the front to go, poles are in the ground as we speak and still got to get electricity i the shed, all boring stuff I know.

But I do have plans on getting a fidanza flywheel once the credit card has been paid off a bit and the engine internals to get the engine out of the way so I can get it mounted hopefully this year, and also get the RAV4 going this year aswell.
